Davenport sucks... I live here close to the fairgrounds and West High. Been here all my life and have had my mirrors on my car broken out, Christmas decorations stolen right out of the yard, we have been egged, and the police don't do shit about it. So the day before yesterday my dad gets a ticket because his front tire was on the curb... $20 but that's not the point. This place blows.
Sadness is timeless and so is greatness. This beautiful and poignant lament reminds me of George Harrison's "All things must pass". It always brings tears to my eyes. Today, as I hear it I think of Steve Jobs.
I've always stumbled on the expression "rest in peace' because both Bix and Steve Jobs were beacons of restless creativity. I hope their spirits never rest and that their invitations to create and their inspiration lives on for ever.

This is Bull! There is absolutely no reason to put Bix's name anywhere near this clip. If you want to add his name parenthetically in the 'notes' area below the video, OK. But to put it on the banner and LEAD off with his name is a crock. Please tell me what is wrong with titling the video: "Alex Welsh—Davenport Blues"?
Whoa Bessie. What is this? We got 3:06 before we get a going again. My, Beautiful, beautiful. Alright Bessie. Let's getta going. Miles before we get where we're a going. But glad we stopped.
Have this recording from LP in the seventies, it's absolutely beautiful. I think you did a very professional edit on Fred's solo to fit the video clips. Thanks for posting '5 stars'
At 2:28 there is a trombone over Bix, it is being played by Tommy Dorsey. I have the July 1997 Smithsonian and that picture is in the article about Bix...
Great video. In 1983 I talked with Paul Mertz about this very recording, Davenport Blues. I wish he could have seen your video as I am certain he would have enjoyed it. Have you heard Paul Mertz's composition Ennui? He based the composition on Bix licks as told me. It was recorded by Lud Gluskin and His Orchestra in the 1920's and I have a piano solo of the piece played by Paul Mertz that was recorded by my husband with his cassette recorder during one of our visits with Paul in 1983.
Lisa, you are the 'it girl' when it comes to making videos of Bix's music! I am just so impressed with your talent, dedication and for your reverence for Bickie. Thank you, thank you SO much!

if they made a movie about him, Shia Lebouf would be perfect for the role

A bit false advertsing IMO. Why even post this under the name Beiderbecke? It does Alex Welsh and Fred Hunt a disservice.
Heck, I heard West End Blues the other day but I wouldn't say 'Louie Armstrong and his Hot Five West End Blues' in the title.

@JJI6881 I took your advice and hung on to every note. The song becomes more beautiful with each playing. Thank you.

Great music! But I have to say I like Bix's 1920's recording much, much more. It sounds very different.

Unfortunately there are serious music copyright problems with the 1925 recording of Davenport Blues
by Bix & His Rhythm Jugglers ... it's sort of mysterious (to me, at any rate) because the same restrictions
don't seem to apply (at least in the U.S.) to any of Bix's other compositions or recordings.
