yea but just the one iron on that hole in '72 is not the only one he ever hit he hit thousands of shots of that caliber... he's known for hitting his low irons high and long and stop it on a dime
Alex10for2>> I'm not sure we are on the same page regarding hitting the 1 iron. I don't think you get what I'm saying, but good luck in your game nontheless.
I don't think anyone realizes how much power and club head speed through impact must be generated inorder to get a 1 iron off the ground. Let alone off the tee. Jack was an exceptionally strong athlete in his day. Very strong. I have a 2 iron DCI Titleist that I took to the range the other day and it felt like I was hitting rocks. I couldn't get it off the tee if you paid me, lol. I'm only reminded how great golfers from the past were. It was common to have a 1 and 2 iron in their golf bag. smh
@EagleEyeGolfer I don't think you realize how little "getting a ball off the ground" has to do with clubspeed. You can it get if off just fine with an easy swing IF you have good/great form. The only diff when it comes to swinging faster is the distance the ball wit travel. Of course the faster you swing, the easier it is to get off sequence and because of the lack of loft, slicing is much more likely. That is likely the cause if your inability to get it off the T
@alex10for2 Yeah you're right, but I'm talking specifically talking about hitting the 1 iron. You're not going to swing a 7 iron like a 1 iron. For example, you're not going to swing the 7 iron with the same arch and speed as you would the 1 iron. You can slice a 7 iron just as easy if your "sequence" isn't right. Tempo and balance is required for swinging any golf club. There's a reason why the 1 and 2 irons are difficult to hit. If todays pros aren't using them then what does that tell you?
@EagleEyeGolfer sorry friend, that's not quite right. In fact, it's ironic that it was the very Jack Nicklaus that said this, it's one swing for every club in the bag. Same arc and same plane, for all shots. The length of the shaft, the loft, and the club face at impact are the only variables*. The length of the swing may get a little longer but the approach is exactly the same for a 7 and 1 iron - or any club for that matter.
@EagleEyeGolfer also, the loft on a 1 iron back then was about the same as the loft pros play now with the 3 iron - irons were much weaker back then. As for why a 1 iron is much easier to slice than a 7 - the 7 is far more forgiving, as the face is much bigger; and the loft is also a factor because less backspin on the ball, means more powerful sidespin. Which is why It's easy to fade/slice a driver or 2-iron, but much tougher to slice a 7-iron. I hope that helps, happy golfing!
This guy cant even hit the shot Jack hit, so he is trying to tell us that using a hybrid is the way to "recreate Nicklaus's great 1-iron"? Just blasphemy
I've see alot of great shots, but Jack's 1 iron hitting the pin and dropping about 3inches to the hole was lengendary. Gene Sarazen's double eagle would have been nice to see.
Are u kidding-what was the point of this video? Not only do we not see the shot from Jack, we don't see it from this joker AND he passes off Watson's tip as useless. Cocky bastard!
@BoHoVsGolf Jack is known for a fade but he could shape the ball in both directions whenever he liked. He's gone entire tournaments hitting nothing but draws. In 1966 for example, he won the Masters playing nothing but a draw.
Also remember that even though he's known for a fade, his ball flight was damn near straight. A fade for Jack only moved about 3 to 5 yards right. A friend of mine played in the 1983 US Open and he watched Jack warm up. Said it was unreal how well Jack could hit it.
@Goynes42 Nobody who didn't see him play can really understand just how great he was. Playing with unpredictable equipment, especially the ball by today's standards, he did everything exceedingly well except his wedge game. I am old enough to have played with persimmon, and the difference from titanium is astronomical. He is the best ever.
@Houseguy2 I agree dude I am 5 foot 9 and 160 pounds. I used to play off 3 handicap when I was 18 and hacking it around off 6 now. What really annoys me is that sloggers off 18 who are bigger and stronger than me can now out drive me now with the 460cc Titanium heads by just brute strength. They would be no where near me with a wooden driver. It is not fair, we should go back to Persimmon and balatas to give the smaller guys with ability a chance
@steveevh1 Stop whining... I'm 5'10" 165 lbs and I can hit it just as far as the big guys. You don't have to be strong to hit the ball far. Maybe it's your swing.
@steveevh1 You sound frustrated! It's all about technique dude-Jamie Sadlowski is 165lbs. It's pretty much all about wrist cock/lag (natural) and making sure you don't use the hands to try and increase club head speed through impact. Look at your biomechanics and I bet u can get another 20 yards with the swing feeling easier than it does now. Hitting the ball with just the left arm is a great drill to do on the range. Happy to answer any q's you have about it.
@latka101 Apparently you don't. And that's fine. Not everybody has to like golf. But a lot of people do...so lay off the "who gives a #$%^" stuff. You're a sad person if you feel like you have to hate other people for playing a game. I don't care much for hockey, but that doesn't mean I'm going to hate on guys who play it. Poor form, latka, poor form.
I actually really like this guys swing, I'm sure the instruction is valid too (I'm guessing, I never turned the sound up...) about how hitting a hybrid, vs. a 1 iron, makes a LOT more sense for us normal people etc. BUT the title IS annoying especially after you watch the whole darn thing and realise your never going to see Mr Nicklaus' original shot!
First things first, Jack was hitting into a 20+ headwind. Second, Jack said he was shut at the top, and had to hold off the release. Third, his 1 iron had the loft of a modern 2 or even 3 iron, & was probably the length of a modern 2 or 3 iron. Fourth, if you try to hit the old wound balata hard into the wind, it would go straight up into the sky, so he most likely over-clubbed to keep the ball down, Jack say in hid GMW video that he usually over clubs and swings easier into the wind. Sheeeesh.
Tiger NEVER hit anything close to as good as that shot. Idiots these days don't understand the true greats of the game. Technology was way behind back then too.
@MrGrevy wow ur a true class dumbshit! remember, tiger plays the exact same type of irons nicklaus did and hogan did back in their days, the only difference is the golf ball. it actually benefited nicklaus and hogan to one degree cause they could get the ball up higher than they would with the modern ball. hahahahaha......dombshit
@TheMagic68 No, he certainly doesn't. If you don't understand the fact that technology has improved the club heads since Nicklaus' days, you don't really need to be commenting here. Good lord.
He mentions two factors explaining why Woods hit 5 iron to Nicklaus' 1 iron: Different golf balls, different clubs. He leaves out two other factors: Today's 5 iron has the loft of a 1972 4-iron; but even more important is this: IT'S PEBBLE BEACH! THE WIND IS WILDLY DIFFERENT EVERY DAY! Nicklaus needed a 1 iron that day; Woods needed 5 iron a different day. Same clubs, same ball, same wind, Nicklaus was probably longer.
@sendmenosigns Actually, haha, yes, he was. Lee Trevino says that Nicklaus, in his prime, using today's balls and clubs, would hit 400 yards. You'll forgive me it I give more weight to Trevino's opinion than to yours.
@bus114 Oh my god than tell you what...if trevino said that then it must be fact. Forget about the fact that Tigger(in his prime) has/had a wider longer arc with a faster club head speed than Jack did(in his prime).
@sendmenosigns You're quite right; it's not fact just because Trevino said it. It's his opinion -- albeit one he is extremely qualified to give. I think we've pretty much beat this issue into the ground; why don't you take the last word and then we'll drop it. (My only hope being that your last word is a polite one, unlike many of the words exchanged in the youtube community).
Hasn't Jack said for nearly forty years that he felt he took the club back a little shut and was then forced to hold on through the shot? The answer is yes and "holding on" wouldn't produce a pull as Mr. Small suggests. This is a neat series concept but it needs to address issues of fact.
absolutely, right. Nicklaus said he had incredible 'timing' that week and, indeed, felt himself 'shut' at the top and he made the adjustment in the downswing. If you look at that shot, he hit a 'slinging' hook in there that short hopped the flag stick. I think Nicklaus' upright action facilitated his downswing adjustments in that he was able to keep his path moving along the target line while he made those minute adjustments to the face angle through impact. Pure genius of the Golden Bear.

Keep in mind, the 1 iron in Jack's day had the loft of a 2 or 3 iron today. All clubs back then were very weakly lofted.
