I remember reading a blog post that Mazda want to make the next-gen MX-5 <2200 lbs... and I don't think they will be using composites.

I would never trade my 111r Elise for this garbage. The Elise/Exige are built from the ground up as a driver's car, made for the track. No I don't have a seat warmer or a GPS head unit, and I don't want that crap either. Lotus made the Evora for luxory and useability, the need to leave their pure track cars just that.

So many morons. This may be a Toyota engine but it's not your run of the mill type pulled from a minivan. It's a 2ZZ-GE derivative and that engine was designed with 1 thing in mind, performance. Toyota has MUCH more experience in developing engines than a smaller company like Lotus does. It would cost Lotus an exponential amount to develop their own engine which is why they sourced it from Toyota. 2400 lbs is NOT that heavy people. 300hp in a 2400lbs car? That's awesome. This car will destroy.

The Elise should be light, cute, and handle like a go-cart. This looks like a "loss of character" in at least the first two categories. 400lb extra, how and why? There are plenty of high power cars already out there. They need to fix the front end, the Evora is not that nice. i would not mind an original Elise or Espirt inspired design. 2400lbs is still fairly light, but the Elise is known for being super-light. I hope they get it down to 2100 range

It's lost one of the main aesthetic appeals of the current Elise, and that is the raised headlights either side of the bonnet. This new design's angular design seems quite futuristic, but I would miss some of it's beautiful curves.

The GTR is 4000 pounds and has 480HP

thats a pretty similar power to weight ratio

plus it looks soo sick that alone justifies a slight weight increase itself.

it'll be running forced induction which will mean it could be modded with more boost. I would much rather drive this than the current version that is like a go kart with no features at all.

@xjxsolja For most cars, 2400 is light, but its not most cars, its a lotus. They usually weigh around 1800 pounds. Once they add that extra weight, it takes a lot from the car. The reason I like them so much is because its bare bones. The interior bearly exsists. Nothing cosmetic, hardly any carpet, small slim dash. That's what makes it so awesome in my opinion.

The problem is that Lotus doesn't build cars for us the fans... it builds cars to stay competitive. But I trust they'll come up with a second version later on, a lighter Elise, stripped from everything... and with good enough suspension tuning they might be able to make this handle a lot like the current Elise.
