Chotto is very useful but I hate it cause I think it kind of sums up Japanese' indecisiveness and hippocracy. I prefere "Bimyo-" (微妙) which can mean very similar to chotto but sounds more sophisticated and hip to Japanese' ear. And more importantly it passes on the message. I find it's frustraing to hear people say chotto and not finish the sentense but if you say Bimyo they 'd know what you mean. But be careful it can sometimes offend people....

Spot on! I live in Tokyo (you know, Japan's arsehole) and rather pride myself on being able to fake fluent Japanese. 'Chotto' is among my most common devices.

Sometimes your Japanese accent confused me a little but you seem rather fluent despite that. Enjoy your stay in Saga-ken and praise the Lord you're not in Tokyo. :P
