interesting video. just curious, was the lighting low in this video or was there a moderate amount of light for this test? it just gives me an idea of what to expect becasue were gonna do some filming possibly with this camera.
actually looks like film :) i've got one of these exact models but can't get a good look from it... could you share how you managed to get the film look?
So what are the settings you should have on the camera to make the manual white balance work? I've put it in manual mode and tried holding the so called "set" button but it won't seem to do anything when i hold it. any pointers or help?
hit the function button. hit the toggle button for wb. toggle to "MWB". point at white surface that is illuminated by your light source and push the toggle button in and hold it until it exits the function on its own. should do the trick.
can anyone tell me how to put a lens filter on the jvc hd7? do i need a special 46mm lens or can i put it over the hood? can i remove the hood? anybody can help me and i'd appreciate it!
neither of both ;) good luck.. just patience and work. Don´t think that the camera or the software will make everything look gorgeus, you need good lighting, good angles, an good manual controls!!! Try to improve your quality by watching movies and following the shots structure
Amazing stuff. Gbmov, you have an excellent talent, I watch your clips many times to try to figure out just what it is that makes them so beautiful. Obviously skill and talent. I think after reading all of your comments I have figures some out. If I do something worth looking at I will post a video response to you. thanks for inspiring all of us!
nice job with the hd7. This is some pretty nice footage. Did you record in CBR mode? Also, looks like some CC work was done. AE or FCP? Great looking image overall!
With the aperature (iris) wide open you should be able to more selectively focus on objects in the foreground and background planes in the image using the MANUAL FOCUS RING.
Remember, FULL MANUAL MODE must be enabled to achieve full control over the parameters of F-Stop and Shutter Speed. Have Fun!
to all you kids who are asking "what mode is this in" or "wow i should get this cam" are gonna be dissapointed - for real this is skill, not the camera, you can achieve a short dof on any cam with the right aperature, nd, and focus settings, so if you dont know how to do that, dont bother this dude, just keep makin your home movies your way aight
I have this camcorder and Vegas 8 Pro works fine with TOD files even directly from camcorder. Bytheway how you get that film look? any tutorial or clues?
film look is made 90% when you are recording. you can get 24fps with a lot of methods. Andrew kramer have some tutorials about it. you can slowdown the video 10 or 15 %. Csi, lost, and other tv series are 30 fps.
awesome man i cant wait till summer so i can make my own movies cus i live in canada and its like minos 40 if i take my camera out my lense will probably crack but great vidd
hey, i just got a gz-hd7 and heres my question: have u been having any problems with the .TOD format when u put it in your computer? i have windows xp, i put the video in the computer through the software that came with it, but i cant use it in Adobe Premiere Elements (3.0)... so i guess im wondering, is there an editor that can use .TOD? is there software than can convert .TOD to something i can use? sorry to bother but you got it on youtube with editing so im hoping youll know. thanks
Open Director express and import the tod file you want. This creates a mpeg2 file on MyWorks folder. Mpeg2 files can be opened with premiere, after effects, movie maker, vegas...etc. You just have to import it on director express. No need to make renders or things like that. Just import it.
At this moment not a lot of editing programs can handle the TOD files.
One of the best, i think, programs that can handle the TOD files is Sony Vegas 7e.
Please note that it's only the 7e version that can handle this, and no other version of Sony Vegas. Just copy the TOD files from your GZ-HD7 to your harddisk and start editing them.
That's indeed an option. But with Vegas 7e you do not have to rename your file. You can work right away with the TOD files.
When using Vegas 8, or any other program, you have to rename your TOD files to MPG and i do not know if that will effect the quality of the Movie you recorded.
ok cheers, do you record full quality with variable bit rates?, i think it's odd that an earlier version of vegas should include this ability and a later (pro) version should not, have you used or seen the 'import from hard disk recording unit'? cheers for the reply
what's TOD files and is that the default extension that the gz hd7 records in? and what exactly dose the quicktime plugin for FCP actually do, dose anybody know, dose it let you just detect the camera, or assist in the exports of the rendered footage. regards
you can use the software that comes with the cam called power direct express, just import the .TOD file to that software it will make a mpg file, if u want to use that mpg file in premier you can right away use it but for after effects you have to rename that mpg extension to avi.
Thanks a lot! well i did not use celofan paper this time it was natural light from my windows. but i made a very very soft color correction; i give it more contrast and less saturation, but just a little. May be tomorrow i can upload a video in which i explain how i do this, it is quite simple. Thanks again

I created a `film look` on my film `Reflections` using the HD7 and creative white balance control in full manual mode.
Anyone buying this cam should forget Auto mode, its been judged to death by many in this mode, but in manual things are very different indeed ;-)

It's pretty easy to achieve DOF look with the HD7. I have used a lot of cameras big and small.
To achieve DOF on video camera, you need to be in FULL MANUAL MODE.
Next, set your aperature (F-Stop) as wide open as possible, such as F1.8.
Outdoors, everything should look pretty bright! To combat this, increase your shutter speed (ex. 1/100-1/500).

How did you get that filmlook? Did you converted the framerate to 24P?

It's indeed a bit strange that only the 7e version does this with TOD files.
I have also treid the vegas 8pro version but no succes with the TOD files.
And it doesn't matter on which bitrate you record ( full hd or sd ) on your GZ-HD7. Everytime it does the trick in vegas 7e, no matter the bitrate.
I haven't used the 'import from hard disk recording unit'.

what's TOD files and is that the default extension that the gz hd7 records in? and what exactly dose the quicktime plugin for FCP actually do, dose anybody know, dose it let you just detect the camera, or assist in the exports of the rendered footage. regards
johngoundry86 3 years ago
yes, .TOD is the format in which JVC saves its videos that are recorded. It's basically a mpg file with 4 extra bytes in each frame.
jiqqaman 3 years ago
you can use the software that comes with the cam called power direct express, just import the .TOD file to that software it will make a mpg file, if u want to use that mpg file in premier you can right away use it but for after effects you have to rename that mpg extension to avi.

The colors look softer, pleasant and more natural than the previous test you did with the Sony. Definitely more film-like with this one. Splendid job!
Care to share the secret? Was this color corrected or did you apply cellophane lighting with filters? Or bit of both? I wish to see it in Full HD!!
