I can't imagine - well I can, really - but don't think I'd like vocals on sleep dirt. I always loved it when fz shut up and played his guitar and let the players shine.
I remember when I bought the CD issue of this album. I was all excited to finally get to hear it with proper EQ! The the vocals came in... I was like "WTF Frank?" @bambudu look for a torrent of the vinyl version of Sleep Dirt, it's all instrumental and totally awesome.
Hey Ritchie, thanx for posting this. Didn't know it existed. Any others like this floating around? Rumored that "Spider of Destiny" was also released as instrumental as well. Music is the best! Daniel
@bambudude "Sleep Dirt" was originally released as an instrumental album, edited as an afterthought because Warner Bros. refused to release his 4-LP album "Läther", and he wanted to get out of his contract. The vocals didn't come until the album was released on CD, and seemed to be left over from an unfinished album based off of a musical called "Hunchentoot". "Flambay", "Spider Of Destiny" and "Time Is Money" were all originally released as instrumentals.
fantastic mate i had it on tape years ago i was and stil am very disappointed with the cd i always think was frank on some sort of medication when he was ill to put that female voice on it
@Donbecker5 The album was originally delivered as an instrumental. Releasing a vocal version of the album was an afterthought. Zappa seemed to have been recording an album based off his unproduced musical "Hunchentoot", as "Them Or Us" contains a song called "Planet Of My Dreams" were the backing track was from the sessions that produced the original recordings and the vocals were from the same sessions as the vocal overdubs for the Sleep Dirt CD.
This should be available on CD. Unlike some I don't hate Thana Harris version, but it is worth listening closely to what George, Ruth and Patrick are doing.
0:21 sounds like hes about ready to go off into ' Old Time rock n Roll ' LOLOL
That would be tragic

I really like the vocals on the Sleep Dirt reissue but the songs definatly are much better as instrumentals like they originally were.

Well I hate those vocals. Definitely one time where the evil suits were right to cut the vocals...this music is just so much better without them...
