Nelli Kim did something harder. She did a tucked version of this from an aerial cartwheel off the beam. So basically the same thing with no hands (although tucked). These dismounts are all illegal now.
It's a tsuk!!!! No one does that first off all cause it's banned and second of all cause it is one of the hardest dismounts in the book. She doesn't touch the beam she flips basicaly without any momentum.
Can someone explain: is this banned or just never performed? One person says it's banned, another says it just hasn't been done in so long that it's not in the CoP anymore.
that is not as difficult as it looks. Just a round off instead of landing on the beam, just stay in the air high enough to do a back salto in a pike position.
@LimitlessHelen You Don't Sound Stupid, Handstands.. Let Me Repeat, HANDSTANDS, Can Break Your Neck. Everything In Gymnastics Is About Timing, Landing And Starting.
And.. A Double Back Pike, Banned? That's A Tad Ridiculous.
@LimitlessHelen im sure other people have already told you this, but you sound the opposite of stupid. gymnastics really is probably the most dangerous sport out there, so having the nerve to ban skills always makes me mad
@gymnast768 They are trying to make the most dangerous sport less dangerous. That's why there's a new vault because people died vaulting off the old vault. They ban skills because they are easier to mess up on and seriously injure yourself. Sometimes they take it too far, though.
@LMA629 I agree. With this skill, if the gymnast misses her hands, she'll probably hit her head on the beam at high speed. It's a broken neck waiting to happen.
@LimitlessHelen You don't sound stupid at all actually. I've did gymnastics for 13 years and wondered the same thing. Then again some skills are banned because there has been several accidents with them over the years where girls have ended up seriously injured while others are just as dangerous as anything else you can do.
@LimitlessHelen like some have said, a move gets banned after a certain number of serious injuries, in some cases death, from attempting the skill. as dangerous as any of the skills can be, skills like this have a much higher degree of difficulty and therefore are more likely to get banned.
Why should it be banned? Didn't seem like she had any problem doing it? I'm sure at one point, that's what they said about many skills that gymnast performed these days.
this should not be banned!! if you dont get a good block, the worst thing that will happen is you face plant. in my opinion, its not scarier than a double back on beam
it was a stupid question lol. This is much harder then a double twist. In a double you are flipping once in the air 4 feet above the ground while doing 2 rotations. In this you use your arms to block off (which is very difficult because your arms are much weaker then your legs) andd then do a flip. So you are rotating 1 and a half. Hope you get my point lol
Well I don't know what the skill number/value is but ill tell you after i go to practice monday. and one day at practice we were looking at dismounts and we saw tsuk on the c.o.p. and my friend tried it.
Im sorry FSU82alum, it is banned. it isnt u who is doing the gymnastics, so you probably wouldnt know. search for banned skills on youtube videos and it will be on there.
I may not be "doing" the gymnastics myself, geddy1997, but I also don't rely on youtube videos to get my facts straight. Thank you live4gymnastics for actually taking the time to look it up in the code of points.
Yea...I think it was taken out of the code of points in 1993. Not sure why. Doesn't seem like it would be any more dangerous than a double tuck dismount in terms of injury.
Who was injured doing this move? More people have been injured/killed doing Yurchenkos than this, but Yurchenkos were never banned. It's all in the politics.
Yurchneko is a risky vault but the new vaulting table makes it less risky. (also the tongue mat inbetween the springboard and the vault helped to make all vaults safer)
@mgrifi ik i was answering someone's question. but haha that answer was wrong too. julissa gomez is my answer, not sang lan, cuz they asked who got paralyzed doing a yurchenko.
I think you'll find one of the earlier people to do that was a russian called Yelena Mukhina and died a few years ago. It may have been in the 70s, could've been the early 80s but she was paralysed as a result
She was paralysed just before the 1980 olympics doing an arabian 1 and 3/4 (thomas) salto on floor. Elena shushunova did the same move in her routine during the 1980s. it is now a banned move for women
Yeah it's like a tsukhara vault, except that you have far less power than on the vault, the gymnast has to push real hard. Another British gymnast did try that in the 1980s - Sally Larner (sp.?) Harder than it looks!
why was it banned? it doesnt seem too dangerous or anything. my cousin did that off the water trampoline at our lake. its harder off beam, though im sure =]

@kaaatify Look again. It's a 1 1/2 pike, starting in a handstand at the end of the beam. As the uploader put it, a tsuk pike off the end.

I don't think it's banned -- Sarah Wolford (Level 10 USAG Gymnast) uses it as her dismount. You can search it on youtube: Sarah Wolford Beam.

why would it be banned i mean isnt gymnastics itself the most dangerous sport?

How is this more dangerous then doing a double twist off the beam? Sorry if that was a stupid question cuz i'm i don't do gymnastics.. lol :/

because your legs are much stronger than your arms. Blocking from your feet has an extremely better chance of landing than off your hands.
