Wow this song is so sad. If you look at Fortune magazines list of the richest people in the world, you will recognize that they are NOT christians. They are men of intelligence, discipline, and ideas. That's what it takes to be wealthy, the favor of God has nothing to do with it. Also african americans, who tend to be very religious, have an average net worth of around 2,000 dollars (no joke) whereas less religious whites have a net worth of 100,000.So keep on praying people, its worked so far.

Love the song, it has become a favorite for us to sing, but I'm sorry, it is a double negative. Can and cannot do not mean the same thing. Two negatives make a positive even if you put no form of evil. The only way to make it work is to split the two with a comma, making separate statements in agreement. For example: '...no, evil cannot harm me...'. Either that or switch the words. For those singing the song the way it is (or wanting to) and having a problem with it, add the comma.

All the years that I have been loving and teaching and directing this song...I neva really sat down and listened and understood exactly what this song was saying until my Minister of Music brought it to my attention. Its still ah beautiful song to me, but I wont be teaching this one anymore.
@ATP6165 That was my initial reaction to the song. I'm not buying into prosperity theology. But I'd like to tell you how I came to understand it and why it's so powerful for me now.
I learned of this song when I sang it with the Rochester Gay Men's Chorus. We were doing it on the request of one of our former members, a trans man (female to male) for whom the song had special significance. In that context, here's how I interpret the song.
The singer has been beaten down his whole life, told his life is worthless, and physically threatened. He finally sees himself as a worthy person, who doesn't deserve to be scorned by the people around him. "Bless me" is a claim of personhood, that he has as much right to pray for blessings as anyone.
The most powerful part for me is "Enlarge my territory." I think of his territory as where he feels safe, where he is surrounded by loving friends and family and is treated with respect.
I don't know what specific thoughts were originally behind the song, or why the Prayer of Jabez is in the Bible. But I think any of us can identify with the sentiments in my take on the song. "Bless me" -- I am a person worthy of love and respect -- and "Enlarge my territory" -- give me a part of the world where I can feel safe and valued.
I prayed and HE did it for me, because of GOD'S love for HIS people HE just......... What ever you need and even desire in most cases, HE just does because of love. but seek HIM first and what pleases HIM and let HIM fulfill the promises of HIS WORD.

i was in massachusetts at this church and the bishop preached about Jabez and when i heard this song it was such a blessing and still is everytime i hear it i am blessed

All the years that I have been loving and teaching and directing this song...I neva really sat down and listened and understood exactly what this song was saying until my Minister of Music brought it to my attention. Its still ah beautiful song to me, but I wont be teaching this one anymore.

@ATP6165 That was my initial reaction to the song. I'm not buying into prosperity theology. But I'd like to tell you how I came to understand it and why it's so powerful for me now.
I learned of this song when I sang it with the Rochester Gay Men's Chorus. We were doing it on the request of one of our former members, a trans man (female to male) for whom the song had special significance. In that context, here's how I interpret the song.

The singer has been beaten down his whole life, told his life is worthless, and physically threatened. He finally sees himself as a worthy person, who doesn't deserve to be scorned by the people around him. "Bless me" is a claim of personhood, that he has as much right to pray for blessings as anyone.
The most powerful part for me is "Enlarge my territory." I think of his territory as where he feels safe, where he is surrounded by loving friends and family and is treated with respect.

I don't know what specific thoughts were originally behind the song, or why the Prayer of Jabez is in the Bible. But I think any of us can identify with the sentiments in my take on the song. "Bless me" -- I am a person worthy of love and respect -- and "Enlarge my territory" -- give me a part of the world where I can feel safe and valued.
