  • there are so many women who can't dance even a quarter of how good Birju Maharaj can! he's a legend!!!!!

  • his dancing has grace that reaches beyond the borders of gender!

  • a gem.

  • omg this wasnt even a minute long and im wowed by him

  • While it's important to educate the ignorant, one must remember the old adage "please don't feed the trolls"

  • Kathak is a phenomenal art form because of its range. Each dancer is required to have 4 aspects: tayari, laykari, khoobsurti and nazakat. Readiness of technique and deep rhythmic understand to be able to produce improvisation, khoobsurti and nazakat (grace of movement and subtlety of that grace). Ardhinariswara is the basis of its storytelling aspect. The kathaka must be able to become man, woman, animal, ordinary and legendary personas. For all this and more, check out Pandit Chitresh Das.

  • as I was saying before, in the past women were not allowed to perform in public thus most of the times males used to perform the women characters. This used to happen in the West too...

  • kathak originator is none other than Lord Sri krishna in form of RAAS along with the gopika's.

  • This will be a huge problem with videos of maestros like Birju Maharaj and Kelucharan Mahapatra and other Indian male dancers. It will attract the attention of homosexuals who know nothing about Indian art. For their information I would like to say that this man is definitely not a gay..and this has nothing to do with homosexuality..he is depicting a female character or a combination of male and female characters in his dance.

  • Please, before exressing such nonsense read some eminent book on Indian music and dance, culture and philosophy... Pandit Birju Maharaj is not 'someone who performs at weddings and threatens anyone" nor he thinks he's a woman. He's a dancer and he's acting and dancing. If you cannot understand that then you cannot understand music and dance.

  • i can't believe you said such cruel wordsto a MAN of such pure talent! pandit Birju Maharaj is looked up on by everyone that reads upon kathak or indian art in that matter!! he is an amazing dancer, but i don't think people with such shallow minds would be able to understand the pureness of each move in kathak. maybe you shoud try doing what he is in this video maybe then you'll realise just how difficult it is to perform with such a grace and delicasy.

  • First of all..nothing to do with Maharaj ji- you don't decide what God condones or not...(by the way it's spelled Brahma...)

Secondly... go and learn what Indian music and philosophy is all about then judge. Do you now what bhakti is?

  • Bhakti is devotion and according to it love to God can also be axpresses as a woman's love towards Krishna. This feeling is also expressed in kathak dance.

  • In the past women were not allowed to dance in public, so men had to do the women characters too. This used to happen in the West too... if you new history then you would know...

  • Hats off

  • Wonderful!

  • maharajji watchin you perform live at bhavan's was a dream come true for me.

  • Maharaji is amazing, as always.
