Big Maybelle was our hometown favorite. Sometimes when performed at Roberts Show Club my big sister said she would walk through the crowd, belting out her glorious voice. So sorry I was too young to witness. We love then and now. The dancer in the video happens to be working it too. She's not playin' lol. Thanks.
Who wrote the Lyrics? White performers could not get away with those types of lyrics. I find the history of the lyrics most interesting. Any comments?
Roy Hall went to his grave asserting that he wrote this - he certainly perfomed it first, for Decca in 1954. It's not hard to imagine that recording - or maybe even a live performanmce of it by Hall, influenced a young Jerry Lee.
WOW!.I DID NOT KNOW THAT THIS IS THEE A.C.T.U.A.L. O.R.I.G.I.N.A.L. RECORDING, PRIOR 2 JERRYS' VERSION!.... i am sooooooo glad that SHE recorded it first though!.YEAAH!~
I already have this on a 78, plus "Hound Dog" and a few others. Quite different from Jerry Lee's 'shuffle' version (which I personally prefer as I'm a SUN addict!), but certainly raunchier! Great that someone digs deeper into the vaults and comes up with the original stuff! Will have to check through your channel more closely! Stay with it!! Hank C.
Actually burnette44, this is NOT the original. It is however, the first cover of the song. The original was a country version of the song, recorded by James Faye Hall. James Faye Hall & Dave Williams wrote the song, and the first recording of it was in 1954. Big Maybelle recorded the song in 1955, and of course the most popular version was Jerry Lee Lewis, version in 1957.
It was Big Maybelle who released the track first that was 1955 then late in October of the same year it was Roy Hall himself who had the second release.
The Commodores did record the third release in late 1955 but they released their version in January 1956 followed by Jerry Lee with the forth release of this track on the 27th May 1957.
Yes I'm sure. The song was first recorded & released in 1954 by James Faye "Roy" Hall. He along with Dave "Curlee" Williams wrote the song. The song was originally a country sounding song. Big Maybelle, also recorded the song in 1954 or early 1955, which is this version you are listening too. But it's JLL 1957 version that became a wold wide hit.
Jerry Lee Lewis even credit Big Maybelle as the one that he covered it from. Maybe Pedrooch is right, apparently know one heard of the guys he listed as the originator.
Jerry Lee says that he got this song from Maybelle. Dont know how the country western version sounds, but he took his cover from her of course and just sped up the tempo.......
@Pedrooch - Big Maybelle made the original recording of this song in March 1955 for Okeh Records. James Faye (Roy) Hall didn't record it until September 1955 for Decca Records. TBC . . .
@Pedrooch What recording from 1954? if Wikipedia is right, Maybelle's recording came out in March 1955, Hall's recording in September 1955. (and Hall and Williams both dispute the other's claim to having written it)
Its cool you have those records! Very cool! ....and as for pedrooch (below) Who really cares? Its a good old song. A classic. So...no room for know-it-alls here!
(him i mean) THANKS and sorry I havent replied to YOU sooner. =)
@NoRosesForMe - I'll be the know-it-all, but ... As with most "know-it-alls", Pedrooch is not correct. This is the 1st recording of the song, made in March 1955. Hall didn't record his until Sept 1955. The authorship of the song is disputable as Hall claims he wrote it & had secured legal copyright as co-writer under the pseudonym of "Sonny David", while a Decca sample copy of Hall's recording lists Dave Williams as sole writer. Recordings now list David & Williams as the writers. Just sayin'
Ah great , im gonna shake my way through the hoovering, ....lol like hell i am it can wait, great stuff, bygone days had better original and different music by far love this, the best
Thank you. Yeah Im trying to use the Notice to prevent blocks. Ive had seeral blocks and a couple vids removed. Its not right because other people post the SAME stuff and their vids arent taken. I dont understand it. But what can ya do?. *sigh*
For what it's worth--I have had at least 30 videos, either blocked or had an offer to allow them to stay, which I refused. Seems that most of these videos were real popular and had a lot of viewers. I'm sure, all of us, that do what we do, have had the same things happen. My understanding is that most of it is UMG, if not all of it.

BTW Big Maybelle's version is the best IMO. The drum back beat and the voice paved the way for what became R&R
