  • It's just my interpretation, but this song is about a role model type figure in someone's life that is not someone's parent. There's a direct father figure reference where he sings "You've been a father to me in 1960's speak." When he sings "sister Socrates" he's singing about a female role model. The lines "I watched your face age backwards Changing shape in my memory" and "I watched your face die backwards Little baby in my memory" speak to the person being someone older than him.

  • THE conor oberst

  • This song is amazing.

  • "i like big dicks in my butt"

    -- @quadsnipable, circa 2010

  • hey not to be obnoxious but i recorded a cover of this song and it would be awesome if you check it out and rated it :) thanks

  • i dont think the qualitys that bad (regardless what anyone else says) well done :)

  • I like the quality. FuzzZzZzz

  • my favourite song

  • I love, love , love this song!!! It's such a shame that nobody knows it in Germany...

  • @maryjune79 I do!

  • bad quality = lo-fi = thumbs up

  • its funny how the simplest song can be the best

  • This song got me through a lot.

  • This song leaves a strong impression that Conor Oberst is Pink Floyd's only remaining competitor. Just listening and processing the lyrics is the only satisfiable accomplishment I made today.

  • I completely agree. Thank you.

  • Conor really proved with this album that less is more. Don't get me wrong, Cassadega was a great record, but it took a year to work on. While this was just a few days of recording in a quaint home in Mexico. This is by far my favorite album from 2008.

  • bad quality

  • It's bad quality because it was put up before the actual song was released,

and it was the first video of this song on youtube.

This was the only way it would record.

  • hm i dont like that kind of music....

but this song is ok ;)

  • one more bright eyes album coming

  • I was in schol with Conor when he wrote this. The anticipated release of Indie-novel 'Cassadaga' by Joshua Daniel Bligh is fast approaching! Add Joshua on myspace or become a fan on facebook. Bookstore tour with Conor Oberst coming this summer. Come read chapter one on my space! /interstategeneration

  • hey lovein this song

  • cant believe bright eyes is over. it was great while it lasted though. sure his new stuff will be just as good.

  • This is amazing. Conor Oberst is incredible. No wonder every band wants him

  • stupid question:

is he in the band bright eyes?

  • He is the band Bright Eyes. The only reason he called it Bright Eyes and didn't go after his own name was because he sometimes played with Mike Mogis and some of his other friends. Some of his later work has been labeled with his name and not the Bright Eyes logo because he's worked by himself and on Different projects. He just finished a cd called Masters of Folk with Mike Mogis and a few other guys. It's pretty sweet.

  • You're 99% percent correct. He called himself Bright Eyes since he was 13, not just because he played with Mike Mogus and Nate Wolcatt (sp). Although he did extensive touring with a rotating line up, Conor Oberst, Mike Mogus, and Nate W. were the three permanent members of bright eyes. He has since decided to retire the BE moniker because he wants to move on. He is the creative force behind BE, no question

  • So what I mean to say is that is not the only reason he went by Bright Eyes

  • *monsters of folk

  • no

    yes

  • yeah

  • bright eyes (he was the lead) now there done ....this is his new band

  • CONOR <3 I love this song. Easily my favorite.

  • Easily one of my favorite songs! top 5 for sure.

  • Yep.

  • when i saw him play this live...amazing...

  • I saw him for the first time live on a late night TV show singing this song and I fell in love immediately.

  • search ryan tragedy

  • WOOO!

    80k views :] yayz

  • awesome song but i think it needs more cowbell

  • Oh HOW I LOVE this song<3

  • Oh how I love your name!

And the song too, bien sur.

  • I actually hate my name, haha, but thank you :p

    (I wanna change it! D:)

  • I was talking about the BrightEyesAthiest person, haha. what does your name mean? faggot stds? haha that's hilarious!

yeah I don't like my name either. it's from a band that I liked in like...8th grade. and now I hate the band.

But I must say, you have GREAT taste in music. Conor Oberst...seriously my favorite musician ever, then M.Ward of course! :)

  • drunk kid, the catholic was my first. I love this man, and finally got to see him live. It was better than I had imagined.

  • Please give a listen to my first video post.

    It's an original song.

  • thank you for uploading :-)

  • I like this

  • hes sober now. thats whats different.

  • I'm trying to figure out what is different about his singing in his newer songs. I know it's there but I can't figure out what it is.

  • He's more folk than before. New band, too.

  • He's happy now?

  • My dream is to create a sort of music video to this song. I have it all mapped out in my head, I just need to film it.

Its a beautiful song but I don't like it when people argue about what it is about. I mean, the idea is for it to be portrayed differently by everyone.

  • I think you should definitely make that music video. You really don't have to listen to what anybody says about it, atleast you did something (:

  • Thank you. And I will make it, it's just going to take a lot of time and require other people. But right now I am working on perfecting it in my head at least. hehe(:

  • this song is about Conor's first experience with heroin

  • In my opinion, Fevers and Mirrors is the most amazing album by Bright Eyes.

    But his new stuff...

It makes me cry and smile at the same time.

  • Yeah, Fevers and Mirrors is amazing, but I really dont have a favorite Bright Eyes Album. And so Far with Mystic Valley Band, I love this album with this song on it, and I know what you mean, It's just a very sweet song. I like learning his songs on guitar. I think its really cool when I can play such beautiful songs, hes a very big inspiration to me when it comes to music/songwriting

  • This has to be one of my favorite Conor Oberst songs ever.

It's a beautifully written song, and it's more of a feel good songs unlike some of his bright eyes ones, which dont get me wrong those are all beautifully written but Conor's pretty much amazing at whatever he does.

  • totally. Most of his songs will depress the freaking crap out of you if you pay attention to them too much. Which is fine, because he can write happy songs too. He's a phenomenal writer.

  • You must keep in mind that it is hard to really not pay attention to one of his songs. His lyrics are just so good, you cant help but listen.

  • i love the album cover ... i wish i could feel the peace he is feeling their.

  • every day and every night is my favorite album... so different is each album though. this new one is really good too.

  • its like listening to crack

  • @Aozzy6495

    not really.

  • @TKisLIVE more like a soft serve from heaven blasting into your face by a giant rocket taking off in florida while a bunch of childen run around, skipping, and throwing daisies to everyone and anyone.

  • I will be buying this album tonight..and sleep to it....and dream it.

  • It's so beautiful¡¡¡

  • beautiful music and lyrics that I wish I could see in printed form... pure poetry.

  • Buy the album. Atone. You can. Atone.

  • im so glad he continued writing beautiful music and his talent didnt disappear

  • Absolutely amazing. Makes me happy. Makes me grin, makes me cry. He has such a way with words.

  • ..but I think ti's about his life, and spirituality in general. he references his brother Justin in a lot of his other songs, and just the beginning bit sets it off when he says "I watched your legends lined up". anyone who has an older brother hears about his brothers legends as he's growing up..that and the whole "i watched your face age backwards"...so he's obviously reminiscing.. Point being, it's a damn good song, and it's worth much more than 500 characters to say it.

  • How could I hear the unreleased stuff?

  • I can never tire of this song. Thank you for posting it. Is there anything else like this that he has done- I don't care for th bright eyes stuff as much.

  • conor has enough unreleased stuff to fill 20 EPs apparently

  • it's all subjective, but I will say, i use to hate his music in Bright Eyes, but it will come to you. you just need to find it during the right time of your life. the guy has such a massive collection of music it's hard to find a starting point, but i suggest any of the following songs:

"old soul song for the new world order"

    "train under water"

    "a perfect sonnet"

"you will you will you will"

    "danny callahan"

    "haligh haligh a lie"

    "the calender hung itself"

    "Lenders in the temple"

  • The majority of people find "Lover I don't have to love" as their first bright eyes song they really appreciate too.

  • My first favorite was "The Calender Hung Itself."

  • yoogregcon: I don't remember my first bright eyes song by it wasn't that one! :)

  • Bowl of Oranges

  • 'padric my prince' was my first favorite, quite unusual i think but the lyrics are sensational

  • wow.awesome upload by you fggtSTDs. great version and song. appreciate it. god bless

  • great fucking song. all the imagery in it blows my mind. that plus the pulse, the heart of the song, is so moving. he has this way of combining the perfect rhythm with the lyrics that's unmatched. there's much more than what's going on on the surface, and i encourage the guy who posted beneath me to actually dissect and analyze the song.

  • I totally agree! I had never heard Conor 's music and when I listened to this song I immediately knew that he was more than a song writer- that he was a serious poet. This song is incredibly beautiful and it is a combination of thick and heavy poetry and the pulse of the song. I studied dance in college and learned a little about the various elements of music. How would you explain the pulse? How Is it different than the tempo, beat, or rythm?

  • you could say the pulse and the rhythm are one in the same, but i consider the pulse in this song to be the guitar body hits he's doing on his guitar on beats 2&4. in the record recording it sounds like every beat in this 4/4 songs he hits, but played live, he hits his guitar on the 2&4 beat. in my opinion, it creates this feel of someone walking, and that's what i believe the song is conveying, a walk through a lifetime, of his youth, to his adulthood. alot of other people say it's about..drugs

  • Beautiful...No other voice like his.

  • I heard this on XM the other day and started crying.

  • Wow.

    I lawl'd

  • conor has an amazing voice, I enjoy everything he does

  • Thanks for posting this up. I could almost picture myself at Cape Canaveral watching a rocket take off, if i close my eyes to this song and drift

  • I love this song. Thanks for posting it.

  • Love this song.

  • Great Album!

  • THIS is what you call a lyrical genius!!! not to mention the fact that conor oberst is EXTREAMLY hot!

  • Haha true, :D

  • "I felt your poltergeist love like Savannah heat."

    I have to admit, that's a goodun.

  • lol

  • gj fag

  • YES

  • Is it true that Conor is really big in America? Like most kids know who he is? Because in England hardly anybody knew him until he started the mystic valley band.

Well at least where I'm from.

    Gotta love the guy x

  • ya he was big in the undergound scene for quite a while. in the last couple years he became decently known but still mainly in the indie section.

  • heh- dont worry, i sorta did the same thing with death cab for cute/the postal serivce...

yeah- connor oberst and the mystic valley band, or something like that

  • seriously how do you pronounce his last name?

  • It's pronounced:

    Oh-burst

  • thanks for not being a dick about it.

  • rofl :p

  • I have to say, I grew up in FL and spent many a day and/or night in Cape Canaveral and this song just completely captures the energy of the place to me.

    The lyrics are beautiful.

What a poet. This song just about makes me cry every time I hear it.

  • 49 seconds into the song and I really like it.

  • coolest song of the album :-)

  • genius lyrics

    modern keats

  • i really like this song but...

what is the draw to this guy?

i'm asking sincerely, not to start anything

  • hes had his own music produced since we has like... 17 i believe. and he was the brains behind the band bright eyes. wich has songs with some of the best lyrics in songwriting in my opinion and many other peoples.

so his draw is his talent for lyric writing and that hes been a pro at it for years.

  • Actually, didn't he start when he was thirteen? And his brother produced Saddle Creek Records with him?

  • This is a great song. Has a mantra feel.

  • this is goosh

  • That wasn't to say that I don't like Conor Oberst. I like his music for the most part but I just find it frustrating when people don't acknowledge other peoples opinions because they differ from their own. It's not as if Conor Oberst has a monopoly on good lyricism. Also, not all good lyricism has to be strongly metaphorical and at times enigmatic to be good. I hold Junior Kimbrough in a higher regard lyrically than Conor Oberst and every lyric he's ever sung has been straight to the point.

  • i think that it's quite sad for people coming on here to insult his music or people to defend it - you shouldn't care what other people think about it. I only like conor oberst for his music not what other people think or ,as some people say, what he looks like

  • Regardless of people don't like his music they should respect him as a great musician. Personall I don't like Jimi Hendrix but I understand that he is an amazing musician and i have respect i wish youtube people all could

  • "and if you swear that there's, no truth, and who cares? how come you say it like you're right?"

-Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes "we are nowhere and its now"

    =)

  • Wow, you kind of read my mind. To me lyrics are just good or bad, nothing in between. I like this song though, pretty good lyrics and it's just very relaxing you know?

  • you dont have to like this musical genouise(sorry for my spelling) but theres nothing wrong wanting to follow in an amazing writters footsteps.

  • who doing the rating?

  • if u dont like the rating, rate it! its a f**kin democracy!

  • Bright Eyes is an amazing band if your opinion is otherwise then you are just ignorant and or you do not understand or do not have the intelligence to understand them, a am sorry for you.

  • The Lyrics I mean of course.

  • couldn't say it better myself

  • Haha, that's a pretty ignorant statement clifurd. You can't hold subjectivity to an objective standard.

  • stop comparing and appreciate the music for what it is. Great song, even better in person.

  • I bought it..way worth it

  • i love this album..

all of his and bright eyes are the best:]

  • Oh my.

Just recently was introduced to Conor's music.

  • ... Retard

  • so many people say connor is the new bob dylan... im neutral on this, i love conor and love bob dylan but when conor was told that he is being called the new bob dylan, his response was "I've been called worse."

    chew on that buddy

  • he was joking when he said that. hes actually a bob dylan fan

  • Conor is one of the greatest poets of our time. He and Jay Mercer of the Shins are just soo elegant with their words.

  • you dont have to miss bright eyes, its not like they broke up or anything

  • i find it funny how there are a lot of pretentious music fucks out there that think that just because they dont like it, that it makes it shit. i mean, i dont like tom petty, which i've heard is odd, but i wouldnt call him shit. he can write music well, it's jsut not my thang.

  • his music*

  • alright i apologize, ill stop mouthing about something his music. Ive only heard a couple of his songs but I really really did not enjoy listening to them. I think my hostility came from listening to this song, it sucks

  • who are you a fan of? im curious.

  • nice name drops douche.

  • What about this song sucks?

I love it. I guess you have your opinion though. Just wondering what makes you hate it.

  • i actually know a lottt of guys who love conor's music, and no they're not gay.

  • i like bright eyes/conor and im not gay!

  • im just saying that hes not a fucking god, hes a human being

  • emo? what the fuck? this is the happiest album this man has put out...

  • grrr at you.

his music has grown so much.

you people who can't see that need to do your research.

you obviously know nothing about conor oberst's music.

  • no im just not a girl, only girls listen to his music, i like artists that appeal to guys and girls.

  • I don't know what I would do without his music. I am truly grateful...he's an inspiration. Wish he would come to Pittsburgh!!!

  • I love Bob Dylan, but this isn't much like him. Bob Dylan writes a lot of 'the ballad of' songs. And songs about political events.

This is simply an imagery song. And theres nothing wrong that.

  • this song is awesome.

  • if u dont understand wat sister socrates has to do with wat he said well then 1. your being ignorant by saying its not original.and 2. you need to study greek philosophy

  • oh shut up! this is a beautiful song. you can't handle that it's not the kind of music you like.

  • you're lammmeeee.

  • the mystic valley was the name of the hotel they recorded this album at. it doesn't have to be original. it just is.

  • I think because mystic valley is the name of the hotel they recorded this album makes it original

  • OH.MY.GOD. how many times have you watched this video, which you apparently hate?? do you just come back here to bash it, or what?

  • do you know anything about conor?

bright eyes is incredible and him going solo is amazzzzzzingggg.

    conor is my god.

  • Idk.. I kind of prefer Bright Eyes.

  • i love conor oberst.

he is the most talented musician on this earth.

  • all great artists take something from the past. he takes a bit from all the american greats, and hes AMAZING
