  • Seems like my test i just did on my 60D was similar. The audio is horrible in my opinion. I used a Sony ECM-77 w/ a couple of adapters to get to the mini plug and set my levels. I did two test, first I set levels to peak @ -12db then set them to peak @ 0 and I got similar results with a lot hissing. Sounds like a snake fest two me. I'm glad you did this test to confirm that it wasn't just me. Time to by an external recorder. Thanks for posting this test!

  • Hey mate,

Can I know what are your in-camera gain levels when you did test on each microphone?

I would like to determine if the hiss in your audio is due to the high gain levels that you used in your 60D or not.

Currently, I set my gain levels in my 60D to 1 CLICK above 0 in the in-camera menu setting.

  • press 8-9

  • Thanks for the comments...I've actually got hold of a Zoom H4n...and also a better cable..(direct without adapters.) will try and do some further testing....I'm hopeful that the 60D can be better than shown in ths initial test....the H4n on it's own is impressive..but does add the syncing issue..

  • have you tried it with a Rode NT1a at all ?

  • I had the audio recording mode set to manual not automatic...is that what you mean by 'audio gain'?

It is possible that I am doing something wrong on the Canon...having a juicedlink adaptor would no doubt make a difference too...

I wonder if a Rode Video Mic direct injected would sound better?

There was a lot of hiss in the Rode versus the lav...not sure why that would be either.

  • @Mavoz I've noticed using certain 3.5mm stereo cables sometimes introduce noise. Like when I directly plug in my Zoom H2 I get extra noise, as appose to recording it completely separate. If you check my channel, and look at my Poutine video, you can hear some of the noise. H2 directly into my Canon 60D, using manual audio. It's not such a huge deal though, over my voice you can't hear it.

  • @lawchristopher I think you might be right on the money here!

I bought a new lead yesterday...rather than the previous adapter I had....the difference is remarkable! Might actually pull this video now...but it is important for people just to make sure they get a good lead! Thanks!!

  • Wow. The canon audio is very noisy. Did you still have audio gain on? My t2i with gain disabled (juicedlink) isn't that noisy (at least I hope not).

  • @particlelight with the 60D you can internally control the audio gain.

  • @pncKing yes you can ,full manual audio control unlike the 550D or 7D.

  • @particlelight yes...it is noisy...I think the lead was causing grief...or possibly the levels.
