Believe it or not elephant executions used to be somewhat common when a circus elephant would kill someone who was not an employee of the circus (the first few deaths were kind of freebies) they would be put down. PT Barnum used to sell tickets to watch the executions this was the only time it was done by electrocution usually it was done by poison, firing squad, or even an incredible yet crude lynch

It wasn't a rampage, unless you call killing three people over a three year period a rampage. As for the poison, they fed it a large quantity of potassium cyanide (which it did eat) shortly before the electrocution. The amusement park WAS in New York though (Coney Island).

@dhyleck Well he was trying to prove that the electrical currents people were using in their homes and in appliances were dangerous because it was a Direct Current (DC) which will fry anything it touches as opposed to what we use now which is AC/DC current which needs to complete the circuit before it conducts electricity. So to show what it would would do to a human to get people to change over to AC/DC he would electrocute dogs and horses because they were easier to come by than elephants.

DC needs a complete circuit to run, AC does not. Wall outlets actually use AC, which is why one prong is the "Hot" one. The hot one is the one getting the AC, the small one, touch that and you are going to get electrocuted.

The elephant "featured" in this film is Topsy, and was sentenced to death in the US after killing three people.
Edison used AC current to kill the elephant instantly (6600 volts) to attempt to convince the population that his DC current was far far safer.
As the alternatives mooted to kill the elephant were poison and, bizarrely, hanging - this method was by far the most humane.

AC does not kill instantly, in fact it is one of the most painful ways to die, comparable to strychnine poisoning. This was NOT A HUMANE WAY TO DO IT.
Edison is still cheap, evil, greedy, and overall stupid.
For many reasons, but in this case because the way he decided to prove DC was better is by frying an elephant alive to elicit the disgust of the crowd; the way Tesla proved AC was better is by lighting up an entire square with thousands of light-bulbs.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals protested against the use of poison, but NOT electrocution, as they considered that form of execution to be humane - as that method was used since 1890 on humans sentenced to death.

Edison used 6600v, not the 240v accidentally used in that clip you reference - which makes a huge difference in amps and thus not instantaneous death.
Wood was used as slippers on the feet to prevent the current from grounding, ensuring the current flowed completely through the animal.
Electrocution is still a method of execution in several US states.
Poison is painless? Let me quote you... "one of the most painful ways to die, comparable to strychnine poisoning."
