  • i was there 2day with my friends and found lots of old checks

  • Have seen quite a few pics over the last few years but this video really does bring back those memories to life! A real shame a building full of such history ended up this way.

    Ross Dellow 87-92

  • Deceit also played a part too - I was contacted by the school (30 years after I left - no idea how they found my address), they said they were establishing a register of former pupils.

It was nothing other than a thinly veiled attempt at fund raising.

"Toughened you up" for what ?

Physically, maybe but intellectually it was a wasteland.

All designed, I presume, for the thick cheuchters, who predominated when I was there, and who didn't know any better.

  • Whoever left it in that condition needs an hours NH.

Where's Stingers when you need him??

  • Shocking state the place is in now. Seems a shame that a great building like that can be allowed to go to ruin.

Was there from 79-86 and look back with fond memories overall.

  • And it did'nt get much better in the grim 70's. For those who endured the Keil experience (NH, Guggs, The Lash, Psycho, The Matron, Roll Call, The Chiefs, The boot room, shorts in winter, Rodney, horsehair beds, freezing cold gym, nasty vindictive teaching methods, even more nasty vindictive senior chiefs, the place falling apart at the seams, financial mysteries with the Burser, sweeping up leaves, copies, more sweeping up leaves......) and got out alive, I salute you!

  • @VicAsbestos Not forgetting the sadistic baths and showers. In hindsight, very like an open prison?Served my time 1979-80. Qualified in glue sniffing,Hash smoking,

boozing and a Masters in rolling baccy and mowing the lawns!!

  • @hydfawr

Lucky man! I did the full 5 year stretch! 76-81. With the 'Masters' beating up the kids on a casual basis in the name of education, like they were doing us a favour! Hang your heads in shame!

Reading this posting only reinforces my view of the place as an anachronism within the educational establishment. One where violence was the accepted norm and education and intellectual stimulation came a poor second.

"Guggs" must have arrived long after I was there but expressions such as "hellish chiefs", "nancy boys" and "shit I was going to face in later life" acknowledge an acceptance of a regime way out on a limb.

How the school lasted as long as it did amazes me.

  • @lodesman1

Guggs Graham? I remember him all too well.

I was lucky enough to do just a year (1970-1971) before getting a far higher standard of education at Paisley Grammar School

  • Thanks Graham, when I was there 58-61, bullying was endemic, physical punishment of pupils by the prefects (chiefs) was encouraged by the staff and academic standards were woefully poor.

Of all the stages of my life (I'm now well retired) the period at Keil is the only one I loathed and could not wait to get away from.

There was never any chance that would send my children to a boarding school after my experiences there.

  • we used to joke when we were there about how we would stick a bomb underneath it stick wee eye on top and blow it to kingdom come

now to see the music room the library the sick bay my old class room wrecked beyond repair is very sad all the memories the banter the slaggings the nick names the teachers "gugs" "wolf" " wee eye" "skippy" the rugby, spinting on the spot in the boot room shouting K ! E ! I ! L! earning your 1st's socks and not to mention "N.H" looking back they were good time indeed

  • @dognducks sorry for you if those days count as good times...

  • Is this a horror film !!!

  • Surely there is an ex keily property developer out there with a nostalgic side. Sad to see the place in that way...Those wee Neds always did have a lot to answer for!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @srhsmith the whole site is being developed for posh homes (except the main building)... the real estate office says they get a lot of old boys looking around, but none of them want to buy. Nostalgia is not what it used to be!

  • cant believe it...!! i was a boarding in the house and cant believe the mess its in. its such a shame.. cant believe the windows on the main stair case are still intact! thanks for posting this.

  • omg!

What a shame, just seen this vid on here. I remember the place really well. I can see one of my prep rooms from the start of the vid and the school house staff room. Can't believe it's gone this way... what a waste..!!!

  • Amazing the destruction thats neds can cause in such a short space of time with the help of some neglect! shame to see the lovely old building in such a state.

  • such as shame to see the old building just being left to rot. The whole grounds and everything is unrecognisable now, pretty characterless just a load on new big houses, Oh and a massive 10 ft electric barbed wire fence to keep the Bruce hill lot away from the mansions - lol. good luck with that! Thanks for posting the video MsBluecat.

    Lisa Dellow

  • So sad to see the place in that state. :(

    Marylin Muir

  • Is M r Robinson OK and well

It was MR Robinson That gave me my start at school as a day boy

  • gugs

    i wish u were here

u used to push and push

    love to meet you

  • Hated the Hooees

sad to see the big place in such a mess

    miss the mark wylye

  • Thanks for doing this. I was a boarder there from about 1965-70, and have particular memories of each room in the video. You younger folk won't know who "Wee Eye" was, but seeing the wreck of his room reminded me of My Name Is Ozymandias.

  • @yellowpolkabikini

i rememember "wee eyeW and his dug boswald the basset hound

    duncan "pete"

  • @yellowpolkabikini

My memories must be fading now. The English teacher with the bassett hound was Bill Anderson? I thought he was one of the better teachers there.

Was Wee Eye not the technical drawing/woodwork teacher? "Methodical methodical methodical"

Also remember Messrs Benton (Chemistry) Coll (Physics) McNeill (Maths) Celli (Technical) Tauber ? (French?) Was he the one who was killed in a climbing accident?

  • I was there 1958-61 and loathed the place.

    Good riddance.

  • @lodesman1 I'm with you, it was an ugly place with an ugly culture.

  • can't believe a once beautiful building has been left to become such a state. So sad :(. Such happy memories of my time at keil, 1997-2000

  • That was crushing watching that. I remember seeing the music building a few years ago and was gutted to see that all in ruins but to see the whole school like that is such a shame. I was there 95-00 and I remember at the time imagining what it would be like to go back and visit the place when I was older. 10 years later and this is how it is. Great place and great memories though

    James Marno

  • Sadest thing I've ever seen. The whole place is just burstin with memories.

    David Clow

  • Its amazing how in only 9 short years it managed to end up in this state! That was weird watching that. Keil holds a load of amazing memories for me so strange to see it in that disorder! Stu Sutcliffe

  • I went there as well, 89-94 I think, Happy days! Sad to see it this way, music is most fitting.

  • watching that was one of the saddest things.. what a beautiful building to end up like that.. it was a special place and i will always be proud i was a pupil.. finally seen the inside of the staff commonroom, i wish it hadnt been like this tho..

  • i was there around 75 too great shame to see delapidation....what's the music??

  • The music is from the film 28 Days Later.

  • This is unreal. im creeped out by this as i have memories from every part of the school shown in this video. i remember your dad cameronpack.

  • Unbelievable... I went to Keil from 87 to 93.

I really enjoyed my time at Keil but never thought that I'd feel so sad and empty looking at how it is now. Memories flooded back to me of that main hall and all that happened there.

Kenny Ritchie said I should search for Keil here and watch. I almost wished I hadn't now...

  • I went from 1990-96, I did not know about the fire until I went to see the building today. it was quite shocking to see the state of it, and quite upsetting as well as it was a great school and I have very happy memories of the place. Such a shame.

  • Loved the video. Sorry to see this great old building being left to rot. I'm amazed the Stained Glass Window is still intact.

  • Thanks for the comments folks :-)

  • where dumbarton is this exactly?

  • Its a shame what has happened to this beautiful old school. I went here @1975. I wish there was film of the rugby fields on the Clyde to go along with this. Thanks for posting this.

  • That could be turned into a realy nice house. But no doubt they would much rather hang onto it until some developer come along and says. Let make it into lots of apartments. and then lays a big wad of dosh on them. Real Shame.

    Awsome Stained Glass Windows though.
