Health regen is for lazy developers who are too incompetent to design encounters in such a way that it both challenges you but also give you enough resources to survive. I mean, hey, why spend countless hours designing a whole level carefully spacing out battles with resources when you can just make a linear corridor with boxes specially to hide behind, blasting idiotic slow moving enemies while your health regenrates. The idiots seem to love it, so why not, it's a win-win situation. ;)

There is a huge difference between good technical quality and good artistic quality.
The technical quality ages about as gracefully as milk; the renderer, the texture resolution and so on quickly goes out of date. But good artistry; well-made animations, interesting or charismatic character design, solid voice acting, interesting level design; that stuff barely ages.
Blizzard are very good at this. Diablo II has shite technical quality; but it still looks good.
