  • pavement isnt the kind of band that you cover and try to "do your own thing". precision guitar playing is what pavement's bread and butter was...well done cover

  • i dont know anything about this band.but they clearly have great taste in cover songs

  • Let me be very clear in saying that I don't think Red Jacket Mine is a bad band at all (nor do I know any of their material). I only commented because I honestly think they could have done something more special with it and that most people would have enjoyed a different take on the song, regardless of whether it is "as good" as the Television version.

  • Nice performance! Television is not an easy band to cover.

  • Yes they are.

Every band is easy to cover.

All you have to do is play the same notes as the recording without fucking everything up.

They didn't even write a new solo for the song, they copied Verlaine's note for note.

  • Oh, cool! I guess me and my friends will have no problem doing covers of Rush perfectly after doing a few Green Day songs.

  • Your problem is that you only know a few Green Day songs. You haven't attempted the right material and you haven't got enough experience, clearly.

All it takes is patience or creativity to cover a song.

If you don't have the time to dissect every last note from the recording, Learn the scale & chord changes, know your limits, and push the idea further with whatever knowledge of music theory and creativity you have.

  • I've heard about you. Red Jacket Mine told me to tell you that you're stupid.

  • Hahaha

Alright, then. If they say so! The great Red Jacket Mine!

Hahaha I only said there is no difficulty involved in covering a song like Venus. If the effort is made, any song can be covered in some way or another, and their lack of effort in constructing a new solo, to me, renders their version disinteresting. Getting a band together to do a cover of one of the most exciting songs ever written shouldn't be a laborious experience. I guess I'm just stupid for disagreeing with other people.

  • No difficulty? Why don't you attempt the atempause that Red Jacket Mine achieves here on the semiquavers?! And the brilliant attack on formalism in that guitar tone? Unheard of!!!!!! Not to mention the clever Howard Blake quotes in the refrain. Why don't you come back when you know a little something about music, Skippy....ok?

  • You're so right!

Forgive me, my pretentiousness meter hasn't been working in weeks.

I've been working so hard to find bands with no ties to Led Zeppelin or The Who, and sometimes I get a little too defensive. Upon closely examining the semiquavers around 2:50 onward, I found myself eagerly regretting all of my previous remarks.

    You win, Peter Pan.

(Get it, it's a clever Peanut Butter reference)

  • Paying tribute to a wonderfully written, immaculately arranged song by covering it -- sharing the experience of Television's original genius as close as they possibly can -- does not necessarily imply a lack of creativity; in fact, I'd argue that while it's not the most inspirational creative choice, it certainly lacks the egotism that many encounter while covering a song. Many try to "push limits" but end up ruining the original glory of the song. See Metallica's "Last Caress."

  • @iamlameduck

I understand where you are coming from. Metallica should not try to cover The Misfits, especially because lots of their fans are too ignorant to realize that the songs are covers.

However, Red Jacket Mine are not Metallica. They are not making disgusting amounts of money off of the songs they ruin. And I have faith in their ability to do something different. Fuck the haters, you know?

  • @VAGINACROBAT

My point is that there's a certain grace in acknowledging just how good Television's original composition and arrangement was. And considering how often (and for how much) Television plays, I see no problem in bringing their sound to an audience, with as little mediation as possible.

Whether Metallica's fans are ignorant of a much better band isn't really the point. The point is that sometimes ego (i.e. devotion to one's own style) occludes the greatness of the original.

  • @iamlameduck

Then you just apply subtlety instead of ego.

Paying homage is, I think, a risky but a potentially more worthwhile experience. I do admit that adding distortion to this song or anything to that effect would ruin it. Rewriting a solo wouldn't be destructive at all, though. And the vocals are clearly nothing like Tom Verlaine's anyhow.

  • @VAGINACROBAT

If you're complaining about a note-for-note solo when there are literally tens of thousands of talentless covers on this website, then I don't know what to tell you. This is one of the better covers you'll find on Youtube.

We can't all be Trebleclef (the finger picker on here whose arrangements I envy). I think it's a good cover, even if it's not unique in any way. I'd rather hear this at a bar than someone trying to flair up an already great song.

    Bigger fish to fry, Vag.

  • @iamlameduck

I think that the band would have much more artistic merit if they worked on a few variations in the arrangement of the song. They could just play different notes from the same chords in the solo. Literally anyone can do it. I'm not asking them to be Tom Verlaine.

I think it would be more enjoyable or worth the risk.

    You do not.

To me, this appears to be about as "live" as a stereo playing the studio version.

However, your opinion is just as relevant.

  • good cover!

  • Purty good purty neat.
