I made this today! My sister hates macaroni and cheese but after tasting this, she loves it! I used 14 slices of yellow singles instead of the valveeta as I don't have any.It was great, thanks for this!
I tried this and it came out wonderfully delicious! Thanks Betty! Even my "ever so pickie" son ate it all! Thanks for writting the recipe down as well x

@1970sarteaga Thanks for your sweet comment! Actually, the recipes I did at the beginning were my *very favorites*, but they don't get much attention. I will admit that they are pretty hard to watch and my later ones are somewhat better. But you are right about where the best recipes are! Thanks for noticing!
Oh Betty do you think that this would taste good if I added some paprika and pepper maybe or would that ruin it? I just always end up putting pepper on my plate, but that may just be my taste.
Your cheese sauce really makes this some good macaroni, Ive also used it to make cheddar potato & broccoli soup. Its is so good and always impresses my guests. Thanks Betty :0)
Hey Betty! I made this for dinner tonight. It was really good!! I added some paprika and panka bread crumbs on top for a little extra spice and crunch and it really went over well! I just have one concern: when I made the cheese sauce, it turned out really fluffy and thick. It wasn't "oozing" like yours. What did I do wrong? I know I had all the correct measurements of butter (melted on the stove), flour (mixed off heat) and then the milk and cheese...
@Lilyflower207 Thanks for the great feedback! I like your changes. Actually, the cheese mixture is pretty thick. You can make it thinner by adding milk to it, but I think it's about right for the amount of macaroni.
@pinkeyshort The only reason it could have a floury taste is if you don't cook together the butter and flour at the beginning before adding the milk. Just make sure you cook until the flour is "done" and you will not have a floury taste.
Is it possible to add sour cream to this type of Mac'n'cheese? I saw your video for the deluxe version but I don't really like cottage cheese. I made this method before and it was good but wanted to try a sour cream version so just was wondering if I could follow this version but add sour cream, or is making it this way and adding sour cream not a good idea?

@RATIHjegeg Kids love ritz cracker chicken nuggets and also deep fried macaroni and cheese. Alos, no-bake oatmeal, peanut butter, and chocolate cookies are great for kids. All of these are in bettyskitchen.
i have literally just taken this out of the oven. I made it with Irish ingredients, as thats where I live. I have to say it tastes....amazing! I adore mac and cheese and always bought it pre made. Thank you sooo much for sharing your knowledge with us. This will be a family favourite in my household! x
@chelts87 Velveeta cheese is much more creamy than cheddar cheese, so it is more appropriate for stove top mac 'n cheese. I would stick to cheddar for oven baked macaroni and cheese. Thanks for commenting!
Delicious...just a tip if you add just a small drop of prepared mustard it really makes this dish great and it tastes better than what you find in restaurants.
Tried this recipe. I used about four cups of finely shredded sharp chedder. At first the cheese sauce tasted like it had no flavor, but when I added it with the noodle, it was great. I topped it off with panko to give it a nice crust.
If I use Barilla Elbow macaroni in the blue box, how much do I pour from the box? It says it has 16 ounces but its also not filled up all the way to the top. Do you think I should pour in half the box?? please reply thank you!
omg omg omg talk about irresistable..now u make me wanna run to the kitchen and make this .thank u better..can u be my cooking friend on facebook..im christina marie..
@MissToxicLove i know rite! i'm on a diet so if i eat macaroni i choose grain macaroni taste the same but has less fat low fat flour or organic brown rice flour low fat butter low fat cheese and 1% milk
Where would modern civilization be without cooking spray? Ever since I came across this recipe I've made it at least a few dozen times. I did some minor adjustments the past dozen or so times. I add either crumbled bacon or shredded smoked ham, then sprinkled the top with "Jay's Kettle Cooked Potato Chips". A quick spritz of cooking spray on the chip topping and into the oven. I let it reach the dark golden brown point. OK, it may sound weird, but the taste of it is over the top outstanding.
Hello Betty _ Question, just one confusen _ you mention to add 2 cups or shredded sharp cheddar cheese using the package _ n then mention you can use a a 8 oz block _ isnt 2 cups 16 ounces ? So should it be 1 cup or 2 cups ? TY I know it just a honest msitake
This is so going to have everyone at my thanksgiving go wild! I do have a strick eating regimen, BUT WHO CARES this looks amazing! I just have to find some good garnish to go with this now.
This is one of my *all-time best* recipes! You made a good choice. I agree, Thanksgiving is not the time to stick to a strict diet. It's not what you eat in one day--it's what you eat on the other 364 days of the year! Happy holidays!
My mother always made her baked macaroni and cheese with flour. When I make it, I substitute the flour with corn starch (to save on fat and calories). I also add dry mustard to the sauce and sprinkle paprika over the top of the dish before placing it in the oven. Your mac-n-cheese looks DELICIOUS!
My favorite activity is eating, so I am always looking for ways to enhance my eating pleasures. This recipe looks easy. I'm gonna try it. I love baked pasta. You're a hottie, Betty.
its totally different with the baked mac i made.. not only the ingredients but also the final product.. see, i added many eggs, veggies and pre-cooked meat to it.. so the final product is more "solidified" .. i mean, i served it in chunks, like cakes!! XD
but, i'll try this method of cooking coz it looks very delicious.. thanks..
You can just eat it on its own--it is a very hearty dish! Or, if you want to serve it as a side dish, it will go with just about anything. In my area, we would choose fried chicken, meatloaf, hamburgers, things like that...
this dish is awesome I wanna be like you all how do you get started videotaping? I am a cook self taught mom, family, friend inspired. I would love to inspire people like you do. we need to cook at home again my mother always cooked great food like you. we rarely ate anything but homemade... You inspire me Keep up the good cooking... you are one of many site i found tonight.
All you need to get started is a digital camera that has a video setting. Then, just click UPLOAD on YouTube. I think you will enjoy uploading your recipes!
I just now saw this comment! I lost many comments in the last month! You can serve this dish alone, or use it in place of potatoes or rice in a large meal. Thanks for the question!
Hey betty ,,I just posted a video responce. This is a different recipe than most people are used to, but I thought I'd share mine, so you can try it a different way if you like. Hope you like it!
You're welcome! This is my *best* version of baked mac 'n cheese! If you get tired of it, I have a creamy stovetop version and a tomato-cheese baked version posted! Enjoy!!!
This is almost the same recipe I use for mac and cheese. I do a little something different in that I add some grated nutmeg to the cheese sauce and before baking sprinkle paprika on top. We love it. My kids would sometimes microwave it before I got to bake it if they had to go somewhere before supper time. Not crispy around the edges, which I love, but they didn't care. ;-)
The nutmeg sounds interesting! I've never run across that in macaroni and cheese, but I'm going to try it next time! It sounds wonderful! Thanks for all of your sweet comments!
Betty, this looks so darn good! I have a question for you. First off, being a semi health nut myself, I really like how you use skim milk and can still produce a nice, cheesy sauce. I was wondering if I could go a bit further and use reduced fat cheddar cheese? If so, could I even use a reduced fat blend of cheeses? Sargento makes a reduced fat 4-cheese mexican cheese blend that I usually keep on hand. Thank you for the help!
Yes, you may use reduced fat cheddar cheese or a reduced fat blend of cheeses. You are familiar with the comparison of the taste of skim milk as compared to whole or 2 %--After a while, skim milk tastes better and seems lighter and more pleasant. It's the same with the cheese in this recipe. I used regular, because I felt like doing too much reduced fat in any given recipe might turn some people off, and that they wouldn't try the recipe. Make the substitutions, and your recipe will be fine!
I've never tried that, but the first thing that comes to mind is making it like scalloped potatoes. Put a layer of cooked macaroni on the bottom of a large greased casserole dish, then sprinkle with shredded sharp cheese, dot with butter, give it a dash of salt, and sprinkle evenly and lightly with flour. Keep repeating the layers, eventually topping with shredded cheese. Pour milk over the top, giving it room to bubble as it cooks. Bake at 350 for 25-35 minutes or until browned.
Vitamin D milk will be fine. I've made it scores of times with all types of milk. it is a "never fail" type of recipe, even when things don't go quite as intended!
Betty, can I use cheddar cheese ???????

This is one of my *all-time best* recipes! You made a good choice. I agree, Thanksgiving is not the time to stick to a strict diet. It's not what you eat in one day--it's what you eat on the other 364 days of the year! Happy holidays!

My mother always made her baked macaroni and cheese with flour. When I make it, I substitute the flour with corn starch (to save on fat and calories). I also add dry mustard to the sauce and sprinkle paprika over the top of the dish before placing it in the oven. Your mac-n-cheese looks DELICIOUS!

its totally different with the baked mac i made.. not only the ingredients but also the final product.. see, i added many eggs, veggies and pre-cooked meat to it.. so the final product is more "solidified" .. i mean, i served it in chunks, like cakes!! XD
but, i'll try this method of cooking coz it looks very delicious.. thanks..

You method sounds great--I like the idea of having a lot of veggies and meat, as well! Thanks for your nice comment!

You can just eat it on its own--it is a very hearty dish! Or, if you want to serve it as a side dish, it will go with just about anything. In my area, we would choose fried chicken, meatloaf, hamburgers, things like that...
Thanks for asking!

Betty what would you normally serve with this Macaroni cheese? or do you just eat it on its own? :0)

I just now saw this comment! I lost many comments in the last month! You can serve this dish alone, or use it in place of potatoes or rice in a large meal. Thanks for the question!

Thank you for the help!
fezan84 2 years ago
Yes, you may use reduced fat cheddar cheese or a reduced fat blend of cheeses. You are familiar with the comparison of the taste of skim milk as compared to whole or 2 %--After a while, skim milk tastes better and seems lighter and more pleasant. It's the same with the cheese in this recipe. I used regular, because I felt like doing too much reduced fat in any given recipe might turn some people off, and that they wouldn't try the recipe. Make the substitutions, and your recipe will be fine!

No, just in the ballpark--It's one of those "never-fail" type of dishes! Thanks for your question!

If I use Vitamin D Milk will it mess it up? and THANK YOU for not using onions! lol. Personally I love onions but my husband is soooo not for them!
trentonjoker 2 years ago
Vitamin D milk will be fine. I've made it scores of times with all types of milk. it is a "never fail" type of recipe, even when things don't go quite as intended!
Thanks for watching!
