In many European countries, it is mandatory to learn at least three or four languages. The thing is, not only does it help you to communicate with immigrants (illegal or not), but, if you wanted to travel somewhere, i.e. Spain or Mexico, etc. then you'd be proficient enough in the language to communicate your ideas rather than sounding like a complete jerk for expecting others to speak English. I think lots of people don't get that's why lots of people have a grudge against the U.S.
