When I was a little boy. I was with my Uncle Rick. I remember one Christmas this came on tv. and it brought me to tears. It still does to this day. Miss ya Uncle Rick Merry Christmas. RIP
I played the part of the Little Drummer Boy for the school Christmas Play when I was in 1st or 2nd grade, it was long ago but I've never forgotten the words.
Thanks for the memories and happy holidays to all!
I don't understand.. Were people putting this down? This beautiful child sang his heart out and it's my very favorite version of this song.. Jealousy will get them nowhere... How very sad that people put others down to try to make them look better.. They don't look better.. They look exactly as they are.. Pathetic..
I think it is funny when people have to criticize someones singing as bad. They are probably just like the rest of us and sing all of the time.............when no one else is around!!! lol Good or bad, sing to your hearts content, I do and I suck. MERRY CHRISTMAS
@1966ChevellesRock So true! It frees the heart to sing and bad or good I bet people that sing for pleasure have less high blood pressure etc.! I'm glad you like it!
i can just imagine the reactions from rob and laura backstage :') this was the sweetest part ever!! :) it was greast because it was so unexpexted! :) GAAAAHHH I LOVE IT!!
I'm so glad to see the posts here! I had been disappointed to find this other thing, on another site: "What many fans consider the low point of the show, Ritchie's off-key rendition of 'The Little Drummer Boy,' is generally cut from the syndication prints." When I first saw the episode, I remember feeling Richie's rendition was so extraordinary (off-key or not!) that I wondered if it had been dubbed by a professional kid singer. Great to find it here on youtube, and great to see your opinions.
@larchmontmark I love his rendition because it's real. A real boy singing to baby Jesus, not a polished and marketed star. Next thing you know they'll have Justin Bieber doing a slick electronically enhanced version.
I am an Indian, do not understand the importance of this song so much. but this is so beautiful to hear and see. The expression on the li'l boy's face actually look like he wants to play for baby Jesus!!
@LinusandSally I don't blame you, it is a classic and one of my few favorites that I NEED to hear over the holidays. It doesn't seem like Christmas with out "Little Drummer Boy" and Larry "Rosebud" Mathews' version gives everyone a warm & fuzzy. I hope your Christmas was good.
Not to denigrate all these precocious little singers who seem to be popping up everywhere these days, but I prefer hearing kids sing a Christmas carol like this.
This was the first version of Little Drummer Boy that I can remember. Richie Petrie's character singing that song on the Dick Van Dyke Show in the early 1960's has never left my memory. That performance was what made me aware of the song. Thank you for sharing it.
Well, I am a musician, and I realized that this was my favorite Christmas carol when I saw this episode of Dick van Dyke back in 2001. This performance is heart-wrenching.
This is so cute and sweet! It is so sad b/c Tyler Moore's son was much the same age as Matthews, and when he was a teen he committed suicide.I was so sorry for her to lose her only child.
Perhaps he could have sung this better and with more feeling - IF he was a professional singer! But Larry was an actor, not a trained singer, so we should not expect the same quality of singing as one would expect from a trained boy soprano in a famous boys choir. I think he did an awesome job! It is beautifully done, and sung from the heart! Just wonderful!!
Me too! I think it's because it's just a little kid and it's real. Even though it's an actor on a show he's singing as Larry Mathews and you can tell it's from the heart!
@Buskieboy He was me in the Waverly Park Elementary School in Fort Worth, Texas Christmas production. I was so nervous...wish we had you tube then! Thanks for sharing!
@mkelly1us I can imagine. Singing this song is kind of lonely. You're not in a choir; it's just you and the drum and the audience! Tough for a kid to do, so be proud you pulled it off!
I've always thought Larry Matthews was a great little child actor and while not in any way a professional singer, his LDB is heartfelt and sincere! I love it.

It's Christmas songs performed by children is what reminds everyone what makes Christmas so special.

So true. And this song obviously must be sung by a child, even if an adult sang it, the song needs the innocence of a child's voice.
