  • sorry, I forget sometimes that Z in england sounds like "Zed" when Z in america sounds like "Zee"

  • This game... IS SO AWESOME... a really good precursor of modern fpss and a precursor of the game style Domination.

  • Best PC game of my childhood! Just reinstalled it and already at level 5.

  • This has been my most beloved Pc game of my childhood along with Duke Nukem!

It's nice to hear the original voiceovers for the robots, they sound more young and fresh if compared to my version, but suprisingly, the original voice of ZOD sounds identical to the Italian one.

  • Hahah I played this as a Kid and loved it

  • oh my god! i played this when i was 12 or somethin like that. never got far in the game but i sort of liked it. good ol' times. ^^

  • Do you think you can contribute to the new Z wiki?

  • Kiko I always wondered why do you pronounce the letter "Z" as zed? I guess its a regional thing but I usually hear it pronounced as "zee"

  • One of the best rts games ever.

  • In England, it's pronounced Zed, but it's Zee in America. Why do they sound different? It's the same letter.

  • Actually there are 3 ways to destroy a base. One is to send a unit into the base, another is to kill all the enemy units, and another way is to have your tanks and other explosive using units open fire on the base but that method is very slow. One thing that method does is make manufacturing take longer until its too damaged to produce anything.

  • I had the good fortune to work with a programmer 4 years who worked on Z, a great bloke.

  • Oh my god, this game looks awesome, I have to buy it now!

  • "Won't be getting that Rank very often"... Yeah right.

  • i always thought the guys in the ship were alcholics cause they were nutso

  • zod is chuck norrises mentor

  • lol forgot Z was zed in the UK XD.

  • Legendary game.

  • "Im not that good at strategy games"

I think your X-Com lets plays showed that.

  • My X-Com Let's plays were more for entertainment purposes. I'm actually quite good at both X-Com games.

  • @Kikoskia

Just ignore the troll. We all loved your X-Com LP's

  • @Kikoskia i know this is old but what do you mean by that? if you werent actually bad(ish) at the game you did an excelent job of acting good sir.

  • You say Z funny XP

  • aah this brings up memories *-*^^

  • That ship reminds me of Starbug.

  • @0311SECFOR

Hmmm, so they got Bushonomics going strong in that time...or is that Reagonomics?

  • 6:56, wat the hell, lol

  • seams like an rts verson of star wars batle front

  • I shat a brick when you said Gatling guns are useless.

  • There is a sequel (Z : steel soldiers) that runs even on Windows 7. I got my ass handed to me by the first level, but the humor of the intro is very good, so I'll probably retry...

There is also a Windows 95 version (quite hard to find) of this first Z. It is a patched version (wich introduces minor but noticeable gameplay changes), with 10 levels added to the solo mode. They are harder and larger. Playable in a Win98SE Virtual PC machine.

  • Oh, and now I'm actually curious if you also liked Battle Bugs. It has some things in common with Z too. It had an amusing graphical theme, but it was more micro management heavy than this as you couldn't get new units at all.

  • Cool to see you play this game. I played it ages ago as well, but was very young back then and got stuck somewhere halfway. When I tried it again, it would no longer run on my new computer.

The concept of the game was highly original for its time, and thus quite interesting. Some more recent RTS games that called themselves innovative have remarkably had quite a few things in common with Z when it comes to gameplay..

Anyhoo, I'll enjoy watching this and see if you do better than I did ;)

  • It runs very well with DOSBox ;-)

  • Lol @ quit to Dos button...

  • I still manage to mess it up

Then I did the Kiko strategy :)

  • Awesome LP Kiko...just finished with Deus Ex LP this one is next.... and as always great job bud ^_^

  • I was going to show my friend how to beat the first level, after 5 defeats I gave up and my friend laughed at me :)

This game is as much down to luck as knowing what units stand a good chance against what ^^

  • Lol, this game makes me proud to be American.

  • woo, my father love this game!

  • Wow, thanks a lot.

I'll just go and start digging while I can still lift the shovel, why don't I.

  • For some reason, this reminds me of Red vs. Blue.

  • I have the original cd here in my old games stockpile =D

    love this game!

  • I saw advertisements for this in my old gaming magazines...

  • Oblitzerated? Was that a reference to the FFX enemy?

  • The brits should get consistent and pronounce F as Feb and B as Beb and H as Heb etc. The alphabet song would be hilarious!

  • after you get the jeep to attack something you can just hit space to reselect it as opposed to fiddly around trying to highlight it

  • Stronghold is amazing.

  • Z was an awesome Game!

  • ARrgh! Its "Zee"!!!!

  • In the UK they pronounce it as "Zed". Therefore ZEBRA will be pronounced "Zeh-Bra"

  • @AnOnlyThird

The Bitmap Brothers are from the UK, thus it's "Zed", not "Zee".

  • I understand where you are coming from, as I'm a longtime fan of bitmap brothers games, and also from the UK, however I can clearly recall one of the old Playstation magazines refering to it as "Zee", which is why I am so adamant about the pronunciation.

  • Well, that doesn't mean it's true, does it?

But on the other hand: You play as the extremely stereotypical Americans in this game with the extremely American Commander Zod. So, "Zee" would also make sense.

Let's just say that both pronounciations make sense, okay? xD

  • But "Zee" is also a crime against mankind, hence Zed.

  • The only problem there is that when I think of Zed, I think of that bad guy from the Power Rangers.

  • wow, amazing animations

  • I never understood why red and blue hate each other so much... I mean, even THINGS that bear the color red start to hate things that bear the color blue, and vice versa.

  • It's because the colors clash...?

  • Literally. D:

  • Well... As long as Blue(Red) is alive, Red(Blue) is at risk of turning Purple. And NOONE wants to be purple, right?

So what do you do? Kill the other color!

  • the Masonic Red vs Blue.........typical.

  • I like games like these. And there are a few but i can never find them lol

  • i cant believe i guessed this ?-?

  • If the robots are American, shouldn't it be "Zee"? :P

  • I miss Stronghold ... I sorta liked that game xD

either way, this LP will be interesting, always love my RTS games ^^

  • *Generic rage about Stronghold being a simulation game, not an RTS*

But seriously now, smacktalking AI/Robots getting drunk and headbanging to cassettes?

I think this is why AI's are outlawed in Mass Effect, they're too awesome.

  • this game is full with small details :P thats why I love it.

  • I have to say I was one of those who did not think "Kiko and RTS's go together like green eggs and ham"

But I am pleasantly surprised with your choice here and looking forward to you kicking some blue robot butt

  • i got Army Men RTS i might LP that as an inspiration to this

  • lol i remember that game! good times

  • i agree very good game, but too long for a quick LP i feel and by that i mean the mission's, but im gonna do that when i get some help on that, hint hint kiko ;) lol

  • Good choice!!!!

  • You like Stronghold? Wow... Please let's play it! :D

  • Second that :)

  • The graphics reminds me of Chaos Engine, which is not a surprise.

  • If I were decent at RTS games, I would definitely check this game out. It certainly looks fun and the cut scenes are entertaining.

  • i actually liked what little of the sequel i played...even if i never played the original battles still seemd hectic

  • @Greatdictator i also played the sequel, looked promising with alot of units but something was bad about the game...maybe the invisible fog of war

  • Its not exactly an RTS, its an arcade puzzle, much like Commandos, for example.

  • This is a suprise! I didn't think an LP of an RTS would be very practical, but hmm...

  • You build things not with money but...

    Time?

Sorry, someone had to do it. XD

  • Son of a bitch, you beat me to it. XD

  • Hmm, not sure how interesting an RTS lp might be (Especially such a slow one) but I suppose if you can make reading letters in Realms of the haunting fun to watch, then you could probably make this one interesting easily enough.
