The 1million plus Catholic Irish left Ireland from 1845-1849 because of the Great Potato Famine that starved to death 2 million Irish people.Irelands population was 8-9 million at that time.The English deliberately did nothing to help although we were under their rule. British Empire gave us Irish only 1 notch above the Black folk in the colonies they ruled.Only small amount Irish Protestants were given equal status to the American Protestants.

Mel Brooks said that he used this line to show other bigotry. The white wasp establishment feared the Irish more then any others because they knew there numbers were growing and they were more educated then any other immigrant group. Practically built the railroads and the Buildings.

Not sure if the Irish in the 1800s were educated because of the British Suppression of rule in Ireland.

The Irish,with their Catholicism is what they feared the most and being Caucasian white they could assimilate gradually into white wasp environments over time.Although Blacks and the Irish got on well & still do in ways unique/impossible to other white races,sadly the Irish could not fit into Black culture/ghettos because they were white.
