@getupjumpy : You've got a "federal" system comprised of the various countries, some of which have to carry the others, financially. Also, multi-lingual. No common language. Cultures that differ. A E.U. commission that is unelected. It's a bureaucratic nightmare, with functionaries dictating too many details of life. You cannot have a United States of Europe in the sense similar to the USA. What's needed is a looser confederation, allowing the various countries more say in everyday business.

I have to disagree. Well in a way the US fed gov has grown well well out of control but the principle of the United States is localism, with all states making their own laws, taxes etc.

The EU is far more like Soviet Russia that wants to control everything and make all the lawsa in a central planning style.
