So the buttons would be covered by a plastic sheet? I was thinking a laser cut panel, something that could be swapped out for alternate dispositions. Search on "Hoffrichter SE-5" or "Hoffrichter SE-20" for an example

If you were willing to give up every other row, there could be an overlay that would label the buttons.
