  • Bruce would love this...

  • This song is so beautiful, that all the covers are all right...

I can't explain why I've always loved the Patty Griffin's version: so pure, so simple and true. Maybe this "naked" version make us focus on the words. Anyway, thanks for this video from a Bruce French fan!

  • I love her versions of bruce's songs. this is one of the great versions of any song i've ever heard, and i'm 59 yrs. old so i've heard quite a few.

  • I love her versions of bruce's songs.

  • I love patti .. and she is a Boss fan, but come on Pats ..this is all us Boss fan's favorite ..it's 69 Chevy not 59 Chevy :) ok.. we'll let you get away with it.. cause your Patti

  • This is absolutely ficking amazing....Yeh...!!!

  • Bruce would be proud. Nothing wrong with her covering his song. He'd probably sing right with her. Some ladies like cars too, that's fine. Wish mine did, I'd get yelled at less...................No more old cars.......you said no more old cars............

  • Has anyone ever seen Patty Griffin singing Bruce's "Because the Night?" Would be a great cover for her, it seems...

  • Somebody should tell this chick that Bruce wrote about a '69 Chevy, not a '59. GM didn't start making cars with 396-hp engines until the mid-60's, and a '59 certainly wasn't a "fuelie" (fuel-injected).

    What a joke.

  • @DiggyZazz Really? REALLY? THAT is what you take from this song? Who cares? Do you think the song is really about the car? Even Bruce is rolling his eyes at you.

  • @nina052696 It's not just about cars, of course, but it comes from a place of respect for that culture. This little girl clearly doesn't know a fuelie from a fudge brownie, so her singing it is an insult to Bruce and the many people who take racing culture seriously. She she picked up a guitar and sang some shit that she heard on a record.

  • @DiggyZazz

You are a sexist dickhead. You say - "This little girl clearly doesn't know a fuelie from a fudge brownie". Puh-leeze! I guess a girl couldn't possibly know anything about cars or racing. Shirley Muldowney comes to mind. But obviously she was way before your time since you clearly have just finished puberty. I pity any future wife or girlfriend. Besides, it doesn't matter whether Patti knows anything about cars because like it's been said, it's not about that. Get a brain

  • @DiggyZazz It is an embarrassing mistake to sing the wrong lyrics of a song, and I am guessing that that is what happened here. I am sure she didn't mean any disrespect to the "racing culture" you speak of. Patty is a beautiful singer and songwriter; end of story.

  • @DiggyZazz You really should try to know what you are talking about yourself, before you start blathering. The "396" designation stands for 396c.i. (cubic inches), not 396hp. Anytime a car maker uses a number designation for an engine it is referring to the cubic displacement, not horsepower.

  • @DiggyZazz

If you want to nit-pik, nit-pik Bruce himself (which I am not, btw). "Fuelie" heads were small-block heads only, and the 396 is a big block V-8. Small-block V-8 heads absolutely cannot be put on a big-block. So, the 396 engine in his song could not have had "fuelie" heads. But you know what? I don't care, it's a great song and Bruce is a great artist.

  • fucking disgraceful

  • @anikin69 Ignorant.

  • Why does she sing "-59 chevy" instead of -69?

I don't ask tha she need to be a math wiz, but to sing the lyrics right. anyway... great version. never heard of her before.

  • Just so beautiful and emotional, Ive got to say this versio is far more relaxing

  • I am a die hard Bruce fan and Patty Griffin sings this just as beautifully as he did.

  • And Emmy Lou has been quoted as saying she'd go anywhere at any time just to hear Patty sing...seems she gets chills from Patty, too...

  • She is from Old Town, Maine. My home state. She is so nice, kind and good.

  • She is one of the most amazing artists of our time. I get chills every time I watch this.

  • Thanks Patty!!

  • Patty Griffin lets me know what it will sound like when this life is over and I finally get to hear the angels sing.

  • powerfull

  • I remember Emmylou Harris singing this song and that got me into Bruce's music,Patty is fantastic, thnx for posting this!

  • Great cover

  • this is amazing. Both the song and Patty are beautiful.

  • someone want to chat

I NEED SOMEONE TO TALK TO m0

  • i believe it is in dropped D tuning.

  • Can anyone give me some idea of what key she is playing this tune in ? Also is there anything unique about her guitar style ?

  • I'm ashamed that some of my fellow Bruce fans are so closed-minded. Just because Griffin ins't Bruce doesn't mean she shouldn't do this song, or that she doesn't do it well. Lighten up.

  • @GuitarzanWSC damn right you are. I've been a die hard fan since 1984 and this cover is just plain beautiful.

  • @GuitarzanWSC I could not agree more. Her rendition of "Stolen Car" from "1,000 Kisses" is breathtaking.

  • Completely blown away by this version.

Now have to track down some Patty Griffin albums.

  • Listen to "Stolen Car" Sounds so Springsteen

  • 'Stolen Car', sounds terrific but I can only find a version with the first minute on 'You tube',

Any suggestions where I can find the full song?

  • never heard so much rubbish.

she is good at this song, she is doing it as a fan but no one is better than springsteen .FINITO!!!

  • Patty outdoes the Boss. Immortal.

  • lol that's the funniest thing i've ever heard

it's a good version but come on nobody outdoes the boss

  • nah did not out do the boss..you need to explore some mmore live performances

  • she does too

no one sings a bruce springsteen song like a dame!!!

  • "no one sings a bruce springsteen song like a dame!!! "

Oddly enough, women do Springsteen very well! Have you ever heard Tracey Thorn of Everything But The Girl do "Tougher Than the Rest"? It's fantastic. And Patti Smith or Natelie Merchent on "Because The NIght". I had never noticed until you mentioned it, but Springsteen songs, which should be so macho, really work for women...(or maybe we just like that sort of women!) :-)

  • You are right on, Patty does a great job with Racing. Check out Tori Amos' cover of "I'm on Fire". I am a big Bruce fan who loves when a girl covers one of his song with class.

  • springsteen is masculin, never macho...

  • I love Bruce but I love this even better than his versions. She IS the best!

  • I agree with Emmylou Harris on Patty: "I'd go anywhere at any time to hear her sing."

  • only bruce does it better

  • I love her more

  • I am obsessed with this video! I can't stop playing it. Help me.

  • Two of my all time favorites combined. I'm in love with this video.

  • I love Bruce but, is Patty not incredible.

  • Yes, she is.

  • Patty Griffin's tone, alone, is so amazing that it makes me cry just from the pure joy and honor of hearing her sing a single word, a single note. This is a GREAT video. Thank you! She is the best singer/songwriter walking on this earth, in my opinion. If life was even partially fair, every music lover would have her name on the tip of their tongue.

  • Yes to that!

  • @davis771 she's fantastic, deep, sensitive, warm, it's true

  • This is the best Bruce cover I've ever heard.

    Stunning!!!!

  • I love this woman. She is perfect blend of soul, folk, and melancholy in her voice and she is the best american songwriter today

  • great video!

  • you sing this so well, u and bruce

    and i know it

  • this is wonderful. When was it recorded?

  • never even heard of her.

  • You've never heard of her because you don't really know music. The puerile and witless nature of your posts make that obvious. Patty has been called the one of the best singer/songwriter on the planet right now for good reason. And that ain't me saying it, it's people like Emmylou Harris and Lucinda Williams and Dave Matthews and Bruce Cockburn and on and on. So instead of putting down something you don't know, maybe you should take a listen. You might actually be AMAZED like the rest of us.

  • crap sorry.

  • To each his own. I think you are OUT OF YOUR MIND.

  • Patty is amazing!

  • ignorant

  • Amen, brother. Saw her in a SRO room in Portland a couple of years ago. I've seen hundreds of shows, including Bruce, who I love, but Patty was the best of them all. The woman has charm and charisma in buckets.

  • @Waitomo By liking Dave Matthews makes you win borefest winner!!

  • @ezl2010able -- Wow. I wrote that TWO YEARS AGO. And of all the comments here, you chose that as your focus? *rolls eyes*

  • Springsteen himself is a big fan. She probably wouldn't agree with this but her own songs are at the very least on par with his best. Wake the fuck up.

  • I love her voice and the emotions that she conveys... oh patty!

  • fantastic

  • Patty has noved on but this is still great - also see stolen car link

  • simply amazing

  • I am new fan of hers, but an old fan of Springsteen. This was fantastic, thank you!

  • I had my doubts, very touching

  • Oh dear, simply amazing...one of the most touching perfomances I've ever seen

  • Awesome... thanks for posting! Patty rules!

  • Good video. Thanks for sharing man.

  • She's so good it's hard to process...
