One thing I never really understood - if 1st gear is the largest gear, why does it take the least amount of force from the input shaft/flywheel to spin up? (How it only takes >1 second to top 1st gear out in a sportier car, whereas 5th/6th being the smaller gears, are longer-legged).. Must do more research..

@Enemyofreali7y Because of torque multiplication, a wider change in engine rpm produces a smaller rate of change in output shaft rpm. High gear and over drive is the opposite, takes less change in engine rpm to make a greater change in output shaft rpm, which requires more torque, although the engine torque is the same, hence longer time to accellerate the engine. Plus add friction and drag...top gear is engine torque limited
