  • I have the Collector's CD of these games and they have the .WAV music files, which sound really good but get a little old after awhile (just regular Star Wars tracks on loop). I wish they had the option to switch between them and these cool MIDI tracks. I can't run TIE Fighter in DOSBox on my computer because it runs too slow in emulation (8 year old XP machine). X-Wing works for some strange reason though. Oh well I'll just play the collector's versions in Win95 compatibility mode. :P

  • Best PC game of all time, srsly Lucasarts remake this game. Get it together already.

  • What a game, i cant play it now anymore because my wife will kill me.

I remember that i achieve all mission at hard, mission objectives (primary, secondary and bonus) but there was only one mission that i was not able to get the bonus, and i thinked at the time that there was a bug. A hint i would share is that on many missions, they sent you waves of tie advance, but kill only 2 of 3 and ''play'' with the third, this way no new waves will be sent until the third one is destroyed.

  • 2 Rebel pilots hated this video

  • Have you not noticed that cap-ships don't fire their turrets when you run this game at max or auto cycles? Kinda unbalances the game, and is an issue I'm still trying to solve...

  • This game has so deeply ingrained itself in my psyche that I still have dreams about it, 10 years since playing it. No lies.

    Thank you for uploading!

  • What are you doing? Flying in circles?

  • Some times Mouse can help with precision shots, Imagine a remake of this game with cooperative mode play?? I want my team alpha Mu or beta

  • this game was awesome!! I really love it, and i'm replaying in version with xwing vs tie graphics engine, it's sooo coool!!! and this mission was extremely action and time attack challenging, I love this game LOVE IT! in this version i love how the music changes depending the status of the mission, EXCELENTE VIDEO

  • Has anyone noticed in the game that if they face a certain direction, their ship seemed to be "repelled" away from looking that way? This is most noticeable in the Flight Training when you reach the first segment. Is it just me or does it happen to everyone else?

  • MISSION CRITICAL CRAFT UNDER ATTACK!!!

ALPHA 1 MISSION CRITICAL CRAFT DESTROYED

    abort mission mission of failure

  • Looooooooooooove this

  • Awesome :)

  • Ah the memoires! Damn Rebels and their really fast A-wing!

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah, the music that plays at the beginning of a mission (and also while you've completed your objectives and are waiting for new ones) is so pleasing...

  • So nostalgic. If I remember right, this was the mission that was on the TIE Fighter demo. I can't remember which game the demo came with, I was like 13 or so at the time, but I loved this mission to death.

Personally I think the TIE Fighter/Interceptor missions are best, it's too easy in a shielded craft.

  • That was one of my favorite musical pieces - right when you leave the hangar and start the mission. Damn those Z-95s. They can be a real bitch. Although the one ship that always gave me the most trouble was those @#%ing A-wings. Amazing speed and maneuverability...

  • @XerxesOmicron... A-Wing was scum tough to kill... I understand you :P I love this game!!!

  • Tie fighter Alpha , this is flight group Gamma. Using your target for attack/

  • You are obviosly playing at 640X480...

How do you manage to do it.. i have a Core2Duo oced to 3.3Ghz and i run this in DosBox and all goes ok until some craft appear on screen at wich point frame rate slows down a lot.. i try increasing cycles..but there is a point where performance decreases with more cycles..

Any light on what config you use on DOsBOX?

  • check in dosbox.conf in the joystick section for "timed=true". That either needs to be set to true or false (can't remember) or the controls go crazy.

  • Thanks.. but my joystick seems to work fine.. the problem is that as soon as some ships appear on screen framerate drops horribly.. no matter how many cycles i increase it doesnt go better .. (even it goes worst as cycles go up) and my CPU load never goes beyond 18% in both cores

  • I gave it a try.. ti seems to go better.. but i will make more test later.. thanks!!!

  • Well , that was a big improvement.. frame rate still drops some but now it goes quite a lot better and its actually playable.. tought asd for now i have to add up to 60.000 cycles to make it playable with several craft on screen.. im using a frontend.. so maybe i should use dosbox directly with the conf file..

Now i have to learn how add that rich MIDI enviroment.. downloading SGM-v2.0 :D (hope it brings some FAQ on how using it)

  • I don't use a frontend with Dosbox so I can't help there. It's not that hard to just use it directly. Feels more hands-on and DOS like. You shouldn't need to set cycles manually, at least not with straight Dosbox because it detects the max cycles your comp can handle.

Also, to use that SGM soundfont you'll need an Creative Audigy or SB Live!.

  • Thanks for all the help.. you allowed me to replay one of my teenage vices and all time fav game!

I will learn to use dosbox directly.. after all its only using the .conf file and adding the parameters right?

I noticed the SB thing.. fortunatelly i happen to have a SB Live! (value) wich i was thiking in reinstall because my motherboard integrated soundcard sucks.. now i have an extra motivation

    Thanks again!

  • @swaaye Question about the CD-Rom Collectors Edition of TIE Fighter. I own both the original floppy-disk release and the Collectors Edition, and I remember well the absolutely killer music of the original version. However, with the Collectors Edition I don't get any inflight music! All I get is the irritating whining drone of my engines. Is there something special you did to get the music back?

  • @sparrowlt - Just set cycles to "auto" - it always works for me (laptop, 1.5 GHz, cheap video card). If my old machine can do it, yours should have no problem. I use DosBox directly, btw.

  • "This craft is not equipped with a Deflector shield system."

Oh, how I hated those words...

  • I always thought Tie Fighter was more Challenging because for the Majority of the Missions you fly unshielded craft with no Hyperdirves. (T/F, T/B, T/I) You had to rely on spped and maneuverability to beat the Rebs and Pirates. But there were always others there to help ya and if things got rough, Shift R for Reinforcements.

The Rebs, it you lost yourwingmen, too bad, just vector out for a minute or two, charge your shields double and fight on. Cool Post Buddy.

  • My favorite game as well.

Has one of the best Music-Engines around.

The music always seems to fit and contributes

a lot to the game as a whole.

  • omg it IS lt. Gruber from Allo Allo!

  • Nice video. That mission is quite annoying if you want to achieve all the bonus goals.

Tie Fighter is my favourite game, I got it as a kid when it first came out and I still play it! You might want to try and get ahold of the "X-wing Collector's series" version of Tie Fighter. They remodelled all of the inflight graphics so it looks alot nicer! ;)

  • I bought every edition of the game except the "X-Wing Trilogy" release because it's the same as the Collector's Series version.

I actually prefer the DOS Collector's Edition release (one in the vid) because it is what I played the most, it has the awesome MIDI soundtrack (removed in later releases), and it's actually the easiest to get working.

  • Yeah you're right about the midi soundtrack. In the X-wing Collector's version they replaced the Tie Fighter midi soundtrack with a standard Star Wars soundtrack that suits the game less in my opinion. lol

  • This was a great game ... very challenging.

  • This is one of the most amazing games I've ever played. I can hardly believed I picked it up for only fifteen dollars all those years ago, not knowing how great it would be.

  • For the love of God - someone over at Lucasarts touch this game up for the present day please - the best space sim hands down - no need to tweak the gameplay - just a nice facelift would be nice.

  • I think that company has proven itself to be as clueless as they come, honestly.

  • @HexenValdez Just imagine a Star Wars game in X3 fashion were you can be whatever you want to be. Joing the Imperials, or the Rebels, play the reckless smuggler...all in an open enviroment with different planets to visit, different systems to travel, many ships to fly and own. It would be so awesome.

  • If only LucasArts was capable of making games like this anymore. Instead they give us trash like Rebel Strike and Jedi Academy.

Even The Force Unleashed despite all the money poured into it, was only average at best.

  • That's because they fired their design team and rely too much on outsourcing their games to third parties. This game and the other excellent games of this time period were made by LucasArts themselves.

  • Actually this game was created by Totally Games, a now dead developer. LucasArts was at it's best when it adopted a hand offs approach.

Their developers aren't that bad but LucasArts interferes with them, most often in the form of rushing them. This is most apparent in The Force Unleashed, KotOR 2 and Rebel Strike.

  • Gaming has become mainstream business now, so games are only made good enough for people to buy them. That, and the fans have influenced the franchise too much, there's no more room for creativity.

  • Not to forget: X-Wing Alliance and Jedi Academy.

  • It was a combined effort of Totally Games and LucasArts. I know LucasArts did the music and music engine, and probably some art. TG did the rest AFAIK. The game was made during the best years of both companies and it shows.

  • I think once George Lucas finally kicks off we may have some of the much needed opportunities to fill in the gaps and introduce excellent starwars games. Lucas could have made so many cool movies from the star wars franchise instead of pretending to be hi-brow sophisticated. He has to acknowledge that he gained his success from space fantasy and special effects, not from story writing quality or anything 'artistic' in the general sense. Lucas is clueless as to what has made him successful.

  • Battlefront and BattlefrontII are good games.

  • I'd say more around average - above average.

  • @Significantpower This game looks and sounds like shit, but you're still right.

  • @Feralbreed ha you say that now 13 years later, but when it came out it was top of the line

  • @TheBlitz1 I'm sure it was. But my point was about how it holds up NOW. And even though you and others might think that modern installments are trash...they're still 90% of the time better than the games they published back in the 80's and early 90's. The bar has definitely been set higher, because we now have things like support, emulators and online play.

  • @Feralbreed Well the graphics are better but the storyline and plot are trash for sure. This is probably due to old games being forced to critically inhance the quality of the story to make up for the primitive engines. The same thing can be seen with older movies, which are driven by story and dialogue instead of scene complexity and action.

  • @TheBlitz1 Hm..I agree, absolutely. But I think my point was that people who are feeling overly fond towards these games, should learn to appreciate the games we have now too. And not go on about "some game killing the industry" or other stupid shit like that. Whatever, I wont bother you guys anymore. Ultimately, you do what you like.

  • @Significantpower How is hedi Academy "Trash"?! Sure it didn't have a super good story but everything else about it was great!

  • @XxChalksterxX The level design was subpar, the story (and especially the main character) was awful compared to the earlier games and it did nothing to stand out or make up for these flaws.

  • does DOSbox use ROMS or real cds?

  • it can read CDs if you have them

  • I have a CH Flightstick Pro USB. But you can also play well with gamepads that have analog sticks.

For a full size stick, it's important to have a tight center so there's little deadzone. It also must not be too stiff because this makes very fine control impossible.

  • This is a great game with great music. The so called enhanced version (with ingame music similar to xwing-alliance) just doesn't have the same immersive atmosphere.

  • Wonderful video, brings back a lot of memories - I still believe even today that Tie Fighter is the ultimate best game I've ever played in my life. Excellent gameplay, outstanding musical performance and storyline.

Special thanks for the MP3s. Especially the latter proves the wonderful atmosphere this game has.

  • There's no denying that this game was quite the accomplishment.

  • What did you use for general midi playback?

The choirs sound great during the intro.

  • What soundfont did you use for those choirs?

  • I just re-installed this game and played it a few days ago. I still love it! I wish they would re-release it with updated graphics, but the the game play the same.

To get the game to run, I had to set XP to run this game ala win95'. I just can't get the #d card to react and have to play in software mode, better than nothing!

  • Try it in DosBox! Works great for me.

  • As I have posted else where I absolutely love the music of this game. I have the Imperial Capital Ship entrance theme as my text alert for my cell phone. I love how theme conveys the "HOORAY THE EMPIRE IS HERE!" The true good guys in the Star Wars Universe. FOR THE EMPIRE!

  • Are you using a joystick, ie. does a joystick work with DOSBOX???

  • Yup, DOSBOX works fine with just about any joystick.

  • I think this game's score is epic even by today's standards. Now, we just need to arrange this stuff :)

  • I actually recorded a mission's MIDI soundtrack and have it in high-quality MP3 form. I uploaded it to Rapidshare if you'd like to hear that. It is incredibly higher quality than the mono, resampled output from this video. I appended the video info here with links, on the right.

  • MP3 links! Hey man thanks for doing awesome stuff like this.

  • This was one of the best games Ive ever played. I spent alot of my time with it. Is there any place I can download it and have it work on my PC?

  • man i hated those rogues...especially the ones with the torpedoes. wiped out my whole squad....think it was the red ones that gave me trouble.

  • probably the best game i have ever played...

  • I'm so happy I finally got this game working on my comp again! If you're having trouble try downloading VDMSound. There are instructions on the web that will tell you how to get it to work.

  • or use DOSBOX.

  • when using DOSBOX and try installing, it can't find the directories while in the TIE-installation

  • Great video! I love this game, and I'd love to play it again. I have the CD-ROM but the sound card isn't working. Is there anyway I can get it to work?

Also, the music in this game is the greatest. I almost wish a full orchestra would perform the music of this game, especially in places like 2:05. The funny thing is that the MIDI score has been so overlooked when there are complex musical themes intertwined throughout the game.

  • You need to play it in DOSBOX. It emulates a DOS machine and supports Sound Blaster and everything else.

Yeah the music in this game is phenomenal. Especially the interactive aspect of it. IMUSE was just incredible work.

  • I agree about the MIDI score. I wish it was available in unaltered form somewhere. It makes awesome variations on Williams' themes.

  • I used to be addicted to this, what a game it was!

  • Also, my mouse doesn't work very well in full screen mode, but in the other mode it works fine. In full screen mode, the mouse works but it is very tough to turn. I like the mouse better than the joystick I mentioned before.

  • try increasing "sensitivity" in dosbox.conf

  • Can you get a USB joystick to work on DOSBox?

  • yup

  • Great flying! I still need help with DOSBox. I'm getting to the install window (through DOSBox) but it keeps saying "install unsuccessful". Any help would be great.

  • Is this the CD or floppy version? There isn't anything special to get TIE working. I create a folder called "hdd" in the DOSBOX folder and mount it as "C". "mount c ./hdd". Then you mount the floppy or CDROM. ie "mount a a:\ -t floppy" or "mount d e:\ -t cdrom". Then you just install and it should work. The DOSBOX readme is loaded with instructions...

  • Fan service! Thanks a lot for this :)

  • lol. glad to be of service. :)
