The fact that they have not seen fit to remake this gem and many more similar 60s shows speaks volumes for the timeless quality these productions produced and the equally timeless themes that were brilliantly composed and arranged to accompany them. Nothing more needs to be said.Although the shows seem somewhat dated the themes themselves are just the opposite and could be right at home in the present such alongside the very best of current music and even surpasses in some instances.

Probably the coolest of those funky themes that came out around the early 60s, Mr Lucky Peter Gunn and many more. A reflection of the cutting edge stuff that was standard fare back then.Like Magnificent Seven courtesy of bernstein this one is one of the very best and timeless.
Along with the Magnificent seven theme this one did it for me in the sixties. Riddle and Bernstein were at the very top of their respective games the movies were of equal brilliance they needed to be to match such music. Such was the brilliance of these and other masterpieces they could stand alone fom the movies which was the true mark of greatness.
I had always heard about this show, but didn't get to see any episodes until recently on a cable channel called RTV (RetroTV). It was a really neat show with on location stuff. They don't make them like this anymore! Mr. Riddle will always be known for this awesome song - I can see why it hit #1.
What a show, what writing, what a theme song...Such quality we never see anymore; just beyond superb compared to today's crapola. But do ya suppose Kerouac got any deserved just due for inspiring all this, as this whole idea was taken straight out of On The Road including the two main characters even bearing physical resemblances to the two main book characters? Hell no!
What a dreamy and beautiful tune ! Thanks so much for sharing ! :) Now I want to go for a drive, let the wind blow through my hair, and feel free as a bird !!!
If only television today was as thought provoking and entertaining as this. An incfredibly expensive series to film, always shot on location, no matter how trivial the scene, but the attention to detail that accompanied the photography, dialog, and acting was never bettered. A side note of trivia, while everyone remembers the Corvette as red, it never was. Always filmed in black and white, red doesnt work well. The first Corvette was blue,, later ones were brown or tan.
The jazz funk composition to end all way back when composing was an art and practised by those grandmasters of hip and grand epic themes Newman Bernstein Barry and many more. That we see it no longer is sad but then they don,t make those types of movies that lend themselves to what we see here. Pity but thats life.
One of the all-time great themes - on or off the screen (large or small). Indeed, one might even say that Riddle's 'Route 66' is to television themes what Dave Brubeck's 'Take Five' is to modern jazz; heck it IS modern jazz!
I love this music so much!!!!!!!!!!!!! It marked my life with great intensity!!!!!!!!! I never forget it although passed many years without heard it!!!!
Just wonderful!!!!!!!One of may favorite songs!!!!!!!! I love this music!!!!remember my childhood when the days passed so slowly !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Even though this is an original recording (and not the TV soundtrack), I can still hear the announcer's voice in the coda- "This has been a Screen Gems film production from Columbia Pictures....Herbert B. Leonard, executive producer".

I remember my mother watching this show when i was a kid. I don't remember any of the episodes but would like to watch it again. I had heard it was a good show and way ahead of its time.
milner went on to jack webbs (dragnet) Adam 12,and 1 or 2 Emergency episodes, which featured jacks ex julie london ()Nurse Dixie McCall) and her new husbnd bobby troup (dr joe Early) who wrote route 66 song . i wasnt there just read about it. milner is a mich native, as of 2 yrs ago he was still around, always liked his work.(

I have recently discovered the TV show "Route 66" with it's release on DVD. It is a great show with a lot of great writing, especially of it's creator Sterling Silliphant. Thanks for the music video for it's theme song.
Now, if you could play Teri Thornton's vocal version from her 1963 album entitled "Teri Thornton sings 'Open Highway'" (The Theme from "Route 66") that would be neat! "Down the open highway fancy free!"
Nelson Riddle was amazing . No talent like this on the annual freak show called the grammy's last night
