  • RadracingBo is correct. A small spanner wrench hooks into those holes in the collars and tightens them down. Having had one for 26 years, i can tell you: tune it up, tighten them down and that bass NEVER goes out of tune.

  • They are doing that because the collar just under the ear of the tuner needs to be tightned. It can be done with either a small spanner wrench that Yamaha included with the basses new. ( I have never seen one in person) Or you can customise a cheap set of wire strippers to work like I had to.
