During the time this movie was recorded, millions of Chinese were either starving or wondering whether their miserable lives in a collective village will end because of another grain shortage or simply from murder of a local maniacal party leader motivated by the "thoughts" of Mao Zedong.
Chang Kai Shek didn't fight the nips, it was Mao that drove the nips out of China and needs to be commended for that. Mao was a very loyal ally, if only we could have seen that instead of this phobia America had for the word "Communism". Russia was a terrible non trustworthy ally but China was a true ally.

Stalin had treaty w/ Japan at the time & Mao wasn't going to do much to trouble his pay master's foreign policy. Mao actually relied on Soviet aid & whatever he could gain from the opium trade from "taxing" the peasants. The overwhelming bulk of the fighting in China was carried out by the Kuo Mihn Tang. As for being "phobic" of communism, Mao killed 40 million Chinese.
