1) It is cheap as hell to produce because little instrumentation is required, and often the producers of Pop music write the lyrics(Though, I will give credit where it is due, Rappers do write their own words at least)
2) Rap is easily marketable to dumb teenagers who aren't really exposed to actual culture, but just want to follow the crowd and be "cool", hence why Rap is so played up.
