The grounding NOTAMS went out at about 9:30 a.m with the International inbounds ordered to turn around between 10:20 a.m. and 10:31 a.m (there are some variations on the exact timing)...it took until about 6 p.m. to get it done.
At 10:20 a.m. orders were issued to shoot down any commercial aircraft that could be positively identified as being hijacked.
The orders were issued by FAA Administrator Jane Garvey.
The NOTAMS was worded " to land as soon as safely possible".
@theevilmeister You ass, it may have been vectored out to avoid the influx of increased traffic. Then it would resume on navigation. Besides, charter flights with the Concorde happened all the time. Not saying that charter flights originated from Dulles, but charter flights did happen. The 2000 crash, for example, was a charter flight.
The one that goes straight into the ocean between 16-18 is actually going to Bermuda. Bermuda is about 650 miles east of North Carolina. Just because you can't see the tiny island doesn't mean is not there.
Way I see it crude politicians know about sleep and what to do. General staff has been provided and assets have been reviewed from the employees and who they asssign. Politcs as in Government like Govener and sheriff have purchased up to date technolgy following up with other countries in regards to abiltiy to process or acurate storage like core cpu or ssd hard drive. Usable equipment has been provided compatiable with most surounding countries Russia, Asia, and Germany.
actually look at the one that starts from north and south carolina heading over the atlantic ocean 0:16 - 0:17 ......looks like a jet to me. but why do most dissapear over the water? like what MitchORizzo is talking about
I was living right under the approach-ascent pattern for Laguardia Airport. After getting used to the constant droning of planes above my head, it was eerily quiet for a few days!
It was creepy that day, I was living near a commuter field and the sky always had contrails from that airport and the international field. For days, the skies were just - empty. One of those things you didn't notice until something was missing.
Wow, airspace is really crowded in the eastcoast

Look how all the fights coming in from Europe had to be immediately diverted to nova scotia. I bet the people on those flights were pissed.

not good at all, some of the arrows dissappear before they reach a destination eg over the ocean?
MitchORizzo 8 months ago
Damn in 30 minutes they were able to land 50% of the planes. Nice job ATC.

FAA did the right thing....NMCC though screwed up. Don't believe the cover story of 'too many exercises" "too many bad evil planes to handle"
How many missiles/warheads in a first wave russian ballistic strike? I think they can handle a commercial planes.
Tom Clancy warned of this threat directly to a joint chief of staff, after he wrote Debt of Honour.
Whole story stinks.....wish someday we'd know...doubt it.
