  • So powerful. God bless the world.

  • My favorite Christmas Eve. EVER.

  • im an atheist but seriously what's wrong with this. The crew was obviously catholic and this was obviously a powerful moment in their lives. It's good that they expressed their faith in such a way and expressed it with the rest of the world.

  • thay sore so thing that we dont now

  • i what to see the bit we dont see

  • you waNT religious settings REVELATION 14:6 is the prophet st.johns vision of Apollo 8 as it went around the moon on Christmas the astronaughts read from the gosple of genesis to the whole world can be found on u tube and revelation14:20 is in referance to the world trade center on 911 and if your lucky and using the king james version of the bible the space mentioned is the distance between the twin towers and pentagon.

    love to all,

    warrioromanysands

  • 6And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,

  • revelation 14 6And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,

  • wow...so cool. wish we had that type of adventure now. but obumbles canceled all that. bunch of BS.

  • iamlost2. Lunar Tyrner what do each of you insist on posting that Jesus was noy God? Iamlost2 I assume that your masters in theology did not include any courses in humility.

  • That speech would not be allowed on TV today. I'm a Christian and I think the present is in a sad state,

  • I don't care if you're a christian, jewish, atheist, or what have you. The meaning of it is unmistakable no matter what you believe. Cherish what you have on earth, Because the moon never got a chance and never lived.

  • And it was also a message to the ages. Real environment al concerns began from the moment humans first saw "earthrise". Our big blue marble, to quote Carl Sagan, is all we have. To ignore it, is to mutually and wholly commit to suicide.

  • @NelielTuOderswank I agree with you. It's awesome.

  • revelation 14 6And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people

  • @NelielTuOderswank i will give you clarity of revelation 14

6And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,

this is the prophet st. john vision

  • Unless your name is Madeline Murray Ohare (wikipedia) you cannot be any less than struck. 1968, Martin shot, then Bobby. Vietnam and Tet. All doom, all gloom. Yet near xmas, 3 brave souls go out to the moon and give us the gift of the whole picture. Science meets Religion. As Gallileo forecast, the farther we reach, the closer we get. The Bible is writ on earth. God is met in Space. That , is the reality.

  • @rg184511

Sure, Madeline Murray O'hare made a BIG stink about reading the Genesis passage in space, but it was a defining moment for humanity. Apollo 8, Apollo 11, even Apollo 13, those events helped us to rise for a few brief moments above our petty prejudices & squabbles. We forgot about our terrestrial borders & saw Earth as 1 united planet on that one Christmas Eve almost 41 years ago.

  • The bible points out otherwise - When Jesus return, everything in cosmos (Every plants, animals, stars, ANY CREATION) will vanish in split blink of an eye because he's one that created RE-ality

  • It is not the belief in God that is ludicrous. It is simply our understanding of how God created it. You could come up with "God just did it." Otherwise you should come up with that stupid atheistic belief, "Nothing did it." The belief that earth is 6,000 years old still is a defensible fact. The fact that "inflation" of the universe is faster and faster and in fact it's going it's going to end (POP like a bubble.)

  • You'll hear the astronaut talk about "first day" and "second day" not billions of years! Their credibility is rather, "Don't take science literally." The flat earth was made by science.

  • Just enjoy the video dickheads. This was when we were orbiting around the moon. it was a beautiful moment for us all. just enjoy it.

  • thankyou for this post.

a sadly rare moment of rationality.

  • The Apollos were a human endeavor which has not been surpassed. We've not pushed ourselves beyond them. It was the LAST time humans have traveled into the unknown, knowing that any one of a million things could kill them. Just like the pioneers of old. Truly, my generation may have seen the last of this type of pioneering when Apollo ended. It's sad that, after 40 years, no other great endeavors have been attempted. No motivation. No spirit. No curiosity. No pushing our limits. Not anymore.

  • @kurtb8474

The Apollo Era ( & the times preceding it ) was where the human mettle was truly tested. With the Space Shuttle & its successor, space travel has become almost commonplace, & the only time there's publicity is if something goes wrong. Space is still dangerous, but Apollo involved TRUE seat of the pants aviation & navigation skills.

  • I was 9. My family, 6 out of 7 who were still at home, all huddled around our tube-type black and white TV when this happened. There was no sound from any of us as we saw a close-up of the Moon's surface fly across our screen. This was NEVER seen by anyone before. The reading of Genesis couldn't have been better timed.

  • the fact that we are living, the sun rises every morning, the moon and stars stay suspended in space THAT is all the proof needed and one day every knee shall bow and every tounge confess that Jesus is Lord!!!

  • Whether or not there is a god, you have to admit that mans bastardization of his existence is comical.

A jewish zombie has risen from the dead because a cavewomen was convinced by a talking snake to eat a magical apple, so in celebration with practice cannibalism and eat his body and drink his blood so that one day we can be eternal, despite whether we kill others in his name, so long as we accept him as supreme master.

Seriously? I think we got it a bit wrong, dont you?

  • It's funny. So many people here saying there is NO evidence, when I've seen several examples with my own eyes...including the raising of people from the dead. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

  • You people are pathetic for bringing your petty squabbles to such an amazing piece of history that inspired not only Christians, but everyone who was watching their TV in 1968. America is a fucking Christian based nation and will remain so without either of your pathetic insights. Go move to north korea if you believe in the hippie bullshit of "i believe theres a creator but i hate christians". If neither of you care what each other thinks, then stfu.

  • God is so wonderful to have created all the wonders of the universe, God FTW!

  • You are a fundamentalist.

God was created by humans to control people in doing "good".

  • I beg to differ, It is rationally and morally necessary to attain the perfect good (happiness arising out of complete virtue) but attaining the perfect good is only possible if natural order and causality are part of an overarching moral order and causality, ergo moral order and causality are only possible by the postulation of the existence of God

  • Human agency is beset by weaknesses that make the attainment of virtue seem impossible without external aid. We are subject to contingencies that can cut short attempts to grow to moral maturity and perfection. a necessary being must have omniscience, omnipotence and perfect goodness. Thus it will ensure that the pursuit of a virtuous state is possible through external aid in the completion of the moral journey. Ensuring that happiness will result from virtue which is the object of the latter.

  • and please do not give me that erroneous reasoning of the impossibility of spatio-temporal causality because I'm arguing from the standpoint of causality in the metaphysics of morals and not the former.

  • Your attempt at sounding intelligent by utilizing a complex vocabulary just confirms the fact that all you security is in "somebody" (god) that has NO evidence at all.

Here is a fact you might understand. People who who feel powerless often use superstition to give them a "sense" of security.

Also, if you support intelligent design, you are deluding yourself. Just accept that humanity created the "gods" and "spirits".

  • "People who who feel powerless often use superstition to give them a "sense" of security."

-- of course the conclusion you've reached only reflects the belligerence of your thinking and not a matter of rational inquiry, to equate superstition to religious beliefs is a logical fallacy of equivocation and a straw man argument of Ad Baculum

  • It is true then when they say that atheism does not predicate intelligence, pitiful

  • Nothing need more to be said.

You are set if your ways I am set in my ways.

Science (fact) and Religion (faith) will never see eye to eye.

    Peace.

  • Amazing how we have come from this to the godless rotting cesspool that we are today. What a much better nation America used to be, our best days are far behind us.

  • It's never supposed to be our best life now. History repeats itself.

Jesus said, "And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." (Matthew 16:18 ESV)

  • Jesus said, "And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." (Matthew 16:18 ESV)

For these people who like to quote Jesus:

There isn't a single word written in the bible by Jesus or anyone who ever met him. No eye witness accounts from contemporary sources. Nothing.

The fact is that you don't know what Jesus said or did... or if he even existed.

  • The gospels were written between 40 and 70 years after Jesus died. None of these authors met Jesus. There are NO first hand accounts of Jesus in the bible.

Mark was written first and the rest of the gospels are mostly re-writes that don't agree with each other.

For example, Matthew is the only one to claim that, at the crucifixion, dead people emerged from their graves to walk around Jerusalem. This "miracle" escaped the notice of other gospel writers and all living historians.

  • They could have read from a cook book, interrupt, and admit that millions of us starve.

  • Waleselon wrote:

"you saying that the words in the old book is just a fairytale... is also just a theory..."

Really? Let's see. Here are some examples from scripture:

    Talking animals - Demonstrably False

Geocentric solar system - Demonstrably False

    Worldwide flood - Demonstrably False

Earth resting on pillars - Demonstrably False

The bible was written in a pre-scientific era by superstitious people. We don't need these stories anymore.

It's 2009. Time to wake up.

  • It's obvious you've never really read the bible because all your observations of scriptures are incorrect.

The majority of the worlds major scientific discoveries were made by creationists: physicists such as Newton, Faraday, Maxwell and Kelvin; chemists such as Boyle, Dalton and Ramsay; or biologists such as Ray, Linnaeus, Mendel, and Pasteur.

  • Remind me again... which books of the bible were written by Newton, Faraday, Boyle and Pasteur?

The fact that some of these people may have been religious has NOTHING to do with whether or not the bible is true.

93% of the members of the National Academy of Sciences are ATHEIST. However, that has nothing to do with whether or not the bible is true.

You don't establish truth based on who believes and in what numbers.

And you certainly can't win the "appeal to authority" battle.

  • Raydo, you are totally missing four's points and making yourself look foolish.

"...which books of the bible were written by Newton, Faraday, Boyle and Pasteur?"

What does that have to do with anything? You are completely missing four's point.

The fact of the matter is: You are upset that someone dared to read the Bible while on an exploration in to God's creation.

  • "Raydo, you are totally missing four's points..."

I don't understand the bible because some discoveries in science were made by believers? That makes no sense.

The world has benefited from discoveries made by people of all faiths and no faith at all.

    And these gems from you:

    "You are upset..."

" you are... making yourself look foolish..."

Attacking a person's character is a sign of weakness. You have no evidence for your position, so you attempt to belittle me. Sad.

  • I am not attacking you, I am judging you.

Why else would anyone bother themselves with starting a theological discussion on an apollo video such as this?

The answer, is, and I will repeat:

1- You are upset (intimidated at the thought of a Creator.) As well as frustrated that someone would even consider reading a passage from Genesis while ORBITING THE MOON

2- Foolish for choosing this as your medium to display your beliefs

You belittle yourself by coming here to put your animosity on display

  • "I will repeat: 1- You are upset (intimidated at the thought of a Creator.)"

And you will continue to be WRONG because you know NOTHING about me.

I am not an atheist. I am agnostic. I don't believe in the creator of the bible, the koran or any other man-made religion, but I believe a creator is possible.

Now, please, go back to judging me and calling me foolish. Then, see what your Big Book of Jewish Fairy Tales says about judging others and calling them fools.

  • My goodness man, do you live at this URL? How many times have you posted? I will be praying for you!

  • "I am not attacking you, I am judging you."

How very Christian of you. And YOU think I am the one who needs to understand the bible?

    ---------------------------

"I will be praying for you!"

And I will be THINKING for you.

  • Yeah, I'm a Christian and I don't think ever. I just wish I could be like you atheists.

    Idiot.

  • 40 years ago we lost Martin, Bobby and our hopes were vanishing with the racial riots and viet nam. Three men went to the moon not knowing if they would return. They gave us hope and their christmas message from the orbit of the moon saved 1968. I hope that your heart will find (evidence or not) that child that was born in a manger 2000 or more years ago. Blessings to all the good people of the Earth.

  • Oh, by the way, you guys trashing this moment probably weren't there when this happened. You are the ones who will take this world and your ignorance down with you. God help you all. Just remember what the babe in the manger grew up to teach--peace, love and tolerance. You are the ones who don't get it.

  • If this doesn't send chills down your spine, nothing will...

  • How ironic that thousands of people used science to build rockets that would launch them into space... and then marked the occasion by reading a passage from the Old Book of Jewish Superstitions.

I find if fascinating that human beings can be so educated and yet remain loyal to the fairy tales they were taught as children.

I can barely comprehend SCIENTISTS reading from a book that features miracles, talking animals and a geocentric universe.

    How very odd.

  • Yeah, sure it's odd that learned people read the Bible in such a special moment. Odd odd odd!

I guess there was't anything else that could capture the moment in a better fashion than reading the Words of the Creator Jesus Christ.

  • "I guess there was't anything else that could capture the moment in a better fashion than reading the Words of the Creator Jesus Christ."

4 billion of the earth's 6 billion people don't believe in Jesus. They should have read from the Koran, the Vedas, the Bhagavad Gita or the Talmud.

Maybe they should have followed the evidence that leads to the one TRUE GOD. The problem is that there's no evidence for any of them.

Educated people know that, but they read it anyway. How Odd!

  • The fact that 4 billion people don't believe in Jesus doesn't change the fact that they read His Words in that flight. Those words ("In the Beggining *GOD*") captured the momnt better than anything else. Oh, there's no shortage of evidence for the God of the Bible. Free will, morality, laws of science and logic. There are more, but those aer suficient.

  • As a Christian, it amazes me that educated people believe in Santa Claus, elves, reindeer, leprechauns, the tooth fairy, etc.......yet it's asking too much of themselves to believe in an Almighty God who loves them so much that He sent His only begotten Son, Jesus, to die for their sins.

    Amazing! Amazing!

  • Where are these "educated" people who believe in Santa, elves, leprechauns and the Tooth Fairy?

Is it too much for you to believe in the one true God, Allah, and his prophet, Muhammed? It is? Is that because you don't believe in Allah and Muhammed? You don't? Is that because there's no evidence for them?

Flip that coin and you'll see why 4 billion people don't believe in your God or Jesus.

Look at the BIG PICTURE from above. Don't look OUT at the world from inside your bubble.

  • @sergiomats Jesus Christ is not the Creator, God is. Jesus is not God, but the son of God, How can he be both God and the son?

  • @iamlost2 Iamlost2, how can Jesus not be the Creator if John 1:1-3 says He is?

  • @sergiomats Doesn't make it true at all. The Gospel of John was written 45-50 years AFTER Christ died, and it is the only Gospel that differs from the other three. It is not knownwho authored the "Gospel of John" or what/who "John" it was.

  • @iamlost2 Ok. All History is written AFTER the events happened, so your argument doesn't hold water. What kind of "logic" is that? The question is not WHEN was it written but IF it is true. Is it true that Jesus is the Creator of all things as the BIble says or not?

  • @sergiomats Truth does not make it true if only one "person" said it in a book written and translated thousands of times a thousand years ago. Jesus is not God, and "Jesus" said he was not god, but the son meaning we all are. Jesus represents, supposedly, a good righteous person, a HUMAN being, not a supernatural God.

  • @iamlost2 Uh...Jesus said he was not god? How about "I and the Father are One." and "He who has seen Me has seen the Father."? And why crucify a guy unless he has claimed to be God? He wasn't crucified for being a "good righteous person." He was crucified because He allegedly blasphemed. I'm not saying you have to believe it, but that IS what is recorded in the New Testament.

  • @LunarTuner Just like married partners would say they are "one", meaning together. Not the same. Translation is lost. Get it? Jesus cannot be God, because he was a man, a human.

  • @iamlost2, that's not apparently how the Pharisees and religious community interpreted Jesus. For that reason, they crucified him. Why didn't Jesus use your argument? Because He never denied their charge that He had claimed to be God. To say that He could not be God because He was a man is like saying, God can't...ANYTHING! If you want to say there is no God, that's one thing, but if you say God can exist, how can you limit Him?

  • @LunarTuner No, in fact Jesus may have very well have been a Pharisees. He taught the same things they believed in, but differed on a few things. That's when the sects developed. It doesn't mean there is no God, but that Jesus is NOT God. Many Pharisees did not believe Jesus was the messiah, a messiah is not a god. The part written in the NT was well after Jesus' speeches to the Pharisees, and to divide the sects further. God is the same one Muslims, Jews and Christians believe.

  • the 7 churches are muslem states are the 7 seals of revelation the he is lo and they had an now i wonder what he will do to laodicia saudi arabia sardis is egypt pergamos is packistan they had an earth quake

  • @LunarTuner They denied him as the Messiah, not god, because Jesus did not believe he was God either. Jesus may very well have been a Pharisees himself. There was different sects of Judaism, and there was a lot of political and elitism around which the Pharisees were against, just like Jesus. Anyway, if you read up- on scholarship, not a Bible, you will learn more. There is one God, not two. The God of the Muslims, Jews and Christians.

  • @iamlost2, Matt 26:63, 65: 'The high priest said to him, "...Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God." 64"Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. 65Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, "He has spoken blasphemy..."' The Sanhedrin interpreted his reply as a claim to deity! Thus "blasphemy." Claiming to be just another "son"? NO ONE thought he was saying that! And there is not a shred of evidence that Jesus was a Pharisee!

Thanks, Dear. I have a Masters in Theology ;)

  • @LunarTuner Your masters means nothing, the book was written by men, not God.

  • @iamlost2, my point is simply that I don't need your lesson in theology pulled out of thin air.

  • the massiah is in the world today isaiah 19 revelation 3 he macks a promise to the church of sardis

  • the massiah is in the world today isaiah 19 revelation 3 he makes a promise to the church of sardis now that he is in the world we will see a lot more earth quakes

  • you saying that the words in the old book is just a fairytale... is also just a theory...

  • Even though i don't believe in God, but this speech was sais on the riht time, righ place and the right moment. :)

  • this is amazing, thank you.

  • This brought back a wonderful memory, as an 11 year old boy on Christmas Eve, watching the coolest, most exciting thing ever! It's too bad that some people feel they need to throw cold water on it.

  • The most moving thing I've seen on TV in my 55 years on the planet.

  • Borman, Lovell, Anders--how many different ways can you spell "hero?"

  • Not many people know this 'cuz it wasn't made public for years, but Buzz Aldrin took communion on the Moon after the Eagle landed during Apollo 11.

The communion chalice that he used is now in a Presbyterian (Aldrin's denomination) church in Houston.

  • Kinda disappointed. I'd heard that on the words "let there be light" the sun came over the horizon. Ah well, I guess you can't have everything.

  • It was very ironic, because this broke many supertitions

  • If you can't burn anything in space, how does the sun shine?

  • @fresnel149 Your a fucking retard...

  • @mrbadgerpants Oh boy, I DO love having my intelligence questioned by asshats who can't even spell the insults they throw. If you look back, that post was from a year ago, before the @ system appeared. It was a response to some retard saying we couldn't get to the moon because there's no oxygen in space for rocket fuel to burn with.

  • @fresnel149 prey tell, what word did I misspell? I think you need to go back to school.

  • @mrbadgerpants "You're". Nice try, though. Also, it's 'pray tell'.

  • hope all atheist watch this!!!

  • What exactly do you expect it to prove?

  • Bill Anders once a devout Catholic, felt that the experience "made a mockery" of his beliefs and as a result "abandoned religion" altogether.

  • Anders was a rather dogmatic, very conservative Catholic, prior to the flight, who found his rather narrow beliefs mortally challenged by the smallness of earth in the vast universe. Borman and Lovell had decidedly opposite reactions and found their spiritual lives enriched by what they saw. The book "Genesis: The Story of Apollo 8" recounts the whole story of the flight, including this. It's a fascinating account of the flight and well-researched.

BTW: I was there for the launch.

  • Wow! Lucky you!

I remember watching it on TV. My aunt worked at the cape and sent me tons of memorabilia from all of the flights, including a medallion minted from a sample carried around the moon on their flight. Sadly a classmate stole them.

  • sorry witness2history, you can have your rather LAME "dogmatic, very conservative, narrow beliefs" labels back, they don't fly, they don't fit and never will.

  • Its the audio for sure.. BUT the audences at home NEVER saw that vision.. Its film.. only seen weeks after thay had come home..

It's a pity we can see the vision that United the whole world.. make's this quite sad really..

  • i remember this so well....i was 12

  • I wish I could. I born 20 years later...

  • WTF was that?

  • I remember 1968. It was an extraordinary year. Viet Nam, Martin Luther King's and Bobby Kennedy's assasinations, race riots, the Chicago Democratic Convention (and riots).

There were probably some other good things that year -- but Apollo 8's Christmas message is the only one I remember.

I know there are other good things to spend our money on than the space program - but the Apollo program certainly had a high enough return on investment that we should continue to reach for the stars.

  • where did you get this at????

  • Why is this spammed? Is EVERYONE on YouTube a militant atheist!?

  • Apollo 8 broadcast the message during a Christian holiday, their religious background was primarily Christian.

If a group of Muslim Astronauts were in space during a Islamic holiday and broadcast a few positive verses from the Qu'ran, I would not be offended.

  • There is nothing positive in the quran. I hope you are offended. You have to have at least a double digit IQ before entering the space program. Sorry.......

  • Well, we just have to wait a few more years until muslim nations can produce anything scientifically good, won't we? ;-)

  • "When the Crew read from Genesis, they breifly soothed a Nation that was wracked by War, Assassination and Social Strife."

"It was December 24th and Christmas couldn't come too soon." Deke Slayton

"Congratulations Frank. Apollo 8 saved '68."

    Charles Lindbergh

  • "You saved 1968"..this is still my favorite episode of the 'from the earth to the moon' miniseries..

  • Thank you Apollo 8 for saving 1968.

  • To all the people who think the landings were faked. Get yourself a good telescope and go point it at the moon one night. The landing sites are so well documented and mapped, go FIND THE SITES!!! Everything is still up there!!!

  • The landing sites can't be seen. But there is undisputable evidence that we did go. People who beleive they were faked lack faith in the true potential of mankind.

  • Very true. It was a bit of an exxageration but since the sites are so well mapped and documented.... The other thing is that something like this is harder to fake and keep quiet than it is to go and actually do.

  • You can actualy proof the landings. They left mirrors there wich still can be targetted by some strong Lasers for messuremen purposses. And if you don´t beleve me watch the Alpha centauri eppisode about the moon landing!

  • Agree, many people think the Apollo program is over but actually it isnt the distance between Earth and the moon is still being measured today !

  • My neighbor was in the Navy at the time, and his ship was among those in the recovery area for this mission. They were all given a special medallion for it.

  • Ugh, people...what ever you believe, gosh just dont fight. Being 16, i would have LOVED to be alive while this happened. I love astronomy :] my big passion. This is something historic :] i never will never think a human being can fake something like this and actually tell the world that it happened. not fake.

  • If you actually believe it was faked, I am pretty sure you've never been to a launch of a Saturn V or a Shuttle. As someone who has, I would be more impressed if it was a fake... because from fourteen miles away, that's one heck of a video screen and projector being used in daylight hours.

  • The Matrix has you ba2saichinchin......your reality is fake. I totally agree.

  • all those who say fake... phewy!! i say to them truly one of the great memorable moments in space exploration, so far.

  • So the whole launch is fake too? I suppose you think the earth is flat. As for the message that they gave, they probably would be fired today because the government is so blasted corrupt.

  • It's moronic to think this was faked. I was there when Apollo 8 was launched and you can't fake the fantastic power and sophistication of the Saturn V. Isaw and felt it. If the Soviets had suspected it was a fake, they would have glaldy and loudly cried "foul."

  • My understanding is that the three astronauts planned this, NASA not involved. Got too be pretty smart too be an astronaut. Best tribute while looking back at Earth from 1/4 million miles.

  • FAKE ACHIEVMENT?! GET A LIFE!

  • Christmas Eve 1968, I remember it so well, got my first telescope that day!

  • This is not fake my grandfather saw it...

  • Yes i`m an American and proud to be one got any problems with that?

Or are you going to stay in your mom`s basment denying every great achivment of mankind?

  • Occam's Razor - it's ironic that it'd be harder to fake than to actually do. It was done. Not believing it is your loss. Visit the Clavius site, if you're not convinced, then nothing can convince you.

  • They'd be fired worse than that desperate astronaut if they tried that today.

  • Even to a dyed-in-the-wool atheist, this was, and is, pretty bloody moving.

  • I was born the next day.

  • They didn't even have Windows NT back then.

  • Amazing. God bless.
