  • I just realized that I have the same exact same hairstyle that Chris does in this video.

  • On a scale of 1 to Scale the Summit how loud do you like your click track?

  • I like a basses that knows what there doing.

  • Love this style of music.

  • Dat bass

  • My friend takes lessons from one of you guys i forget who. anyways you might know him by Fudge :D but yeah i just had to say you guys effing kickass so... mhm

  • Hey Guys!! I know for the studio you have the dampener for the strings to keep it clean but for live shows is it more of a struggle or are you guys that good? What are good exercises to keep it clean?

  • @DeathMetalMikey yeah its only for studio, we dont use it live. I guess we're that good then, haha. we just practice a lot to keep things quiet, its all about learning proper muting for left and right hand. You practice that really with anything you are playing, there aren't set exercises for it.

  • Care for an explanation on the wristband and the rubberband at the top of the neck of some of the guitars?

  • @CCDaDon15 It's to help dampen the strings and keep the tapping sections nice and clean, alot of bands do it :)

  • please play in Indianapolis, or somewhere nearby .__. i'll die if i don't get to see you guys live some time.

  • how about some footage from audio hammer studios guys ????

  • @MCMLXXXtoINFINITY we cant release it yet, but hopefully soon cause its some grand ol stuff. ha

  • yeah I agree with lunchbox362 It would be massively epic if you guys could play in El Paso........aaahhhh!!!! why!?!?! lol jk hopefully its soon!!! you guys are amazing and Chris just letting you know man you have easly become one of my favorite guitar players of all time. You and Jeff Loomis are my #1's!!!

  • @RequiemsArchitect thats awesome to hear man, appreciate that. Loomis is an awesome player. Digging his solo album and all of its darkness, haha.

And I'm sure we'll play El Paso sometime within the next year. Keep an eye out.

    -Chris

  • u guys shud com back to boston i saw u guys wit dream theater but u only played 1 set, id rlly like to see u guys play at ur own show

  • @Carthy6 I'm sure we'll make it back again soon. We played there again in Jan, but it was an opening spot on another big tour, so we only got 30 minutes again. Possibly a headlining tour in early 2011. -Chris

  • Alberta Canada would really like to see you guys come through. Me especially!

  • oaahh... ribbonmics for guitars, expensive, but realy awesome sound...

  • What were you guys majoring in at MI?

  • GIT, GCA, RIT, and PIT were the "programs" or "majors"

guitar, drums, recording, and guitar craft.

  • I wish you guys had actually played a show here in El Paso instead of bowling...

Although I WOULD pay $16 to watch you guys bowl with BTBAM TDP and Cynic, something tells me it would be much fun

  • Yeah dude, I agree. We get a lot of requests to play there. One day. Day off's are always a waste of time in a way, as we could be playing instead. besides bowling the day was pretty boring.

  • Or you could have posted a myspace bulletin saying you were bowling, and then had hundreds of kids come in and bowl and ask you to sign stuff like annoying fanboys do.

That was a joke, but I guess what I'm trying to say is I wish I had gone bowling that day hahahaha

  • i remember asking you guys what scale your guitars were back in april. the 7 string is 25.5"? That's crazy small.

  • what's that in front of the bass drum? (not the mic)

  • @psyshock918

I think it iis a snare..... i will try it

  • It's a Yamaha Subkick, it's basically another mic.

  • All of you guys are extremely talented. I actually ordered my tickets to watch you guys on the 22nd in Louisville Ky with BTBAM haha. I really hope you guys play Glacial Planet at that show, that's by far my favorite by you guys.

I do have a question though. How long have you guys actually been playing your instruments?

  • I have been playing for about 12 years now

    -chris

  • fuuuck what 8 string is that??

  • @opethfan123123 Sherman Custom 8 String.

  • Guitar noob question -

What are those capo-looking things you guys use? Can't tell if they're actually covering frets or not.

Would love to know what purpose they serve.

  • They are felt rags, to help mute the strings

  • This is a pretty cool band. Very talented musicians.

Although I'm more of an old school metal and punk fan, I truly respect this band. I wanna start getting into them. Any song recommendations?

  • cool man, thanks.

I would check out "The Great Plains" it should be listed as the "featured video" under "related videos" to the side. That seems to be the favorite of the new album.

    -Chris

  • Thanks man,

That song was KILLER. I loved it.

I'll be sure to check out some more soon. I'm prolly going to end up buying the new album.

Keep up the great music guys

  • Sweet man, thanks!

If you want to get a hard copy of the disc. The best deal is $13 through webstore. We give out a Aluminum Bottle Opener and a bunch of stickers with every order. I personally run the merch store myself!

    Thanks for the support!

    -Chris

  • Haha, that sounds awesome.

    I wouldn't mind a bottle opener and I love stickers :p

The only problem is I don't have a credit card. But whatever. I'll figure something out. If anything, I'll just go to the store.

  • Yeah, whatever works best for you! Just letting you know the best deal for you. You could always mail in your order as well. If you are interested in that.... shoot us an email info (AT) scalethesummit (DOT) com

  • @scalethesummit Like A Boss. Gonna Get Me The Cd In The Next Couple Weeks Or So. Come See Us In Seattle Please

  • Awesome, thanks for getting a copy! Appreciate all the support. We'll definitely be back to Seattle, its been about a year since we last played there. Keep an eye out.

    -Chris

  • hey whats the song in the beginning ???

  • Giants.

    -chris

  • whats that thing in front of the bass drum at 45 seconds? a snare?

  • @ibanezxiphos700 no its called a subkick.

  • seeing you guys on the 26 of J with cynic. fucking stoked just heard you guys for the first time like 20 minutes ago. this is the next step of what i've been looking for after i heard the new cynic and Cosmogenesis from Obscura (check it out if you haven't already!)

  • yeah man, thanks a lot! make sure to get there early so you dont miss our set. and I have heard both albums. really good!

  • i always come right at doors. that give me a chance to talk to the bands before they start (sometimes). Hey! Maybe I'll run to you guys??

  • yeah man, most likely. we are always out and about after we play as well.

  • i loved you guys in Prog nation! saw you in the greek theater. bought the CD

  • Killer, thanks a lot. We'll be back in LA at House Of Blues this Jan! -Chris

  • No problem. Quick question... say you were forced to have vocals on your next recording... what style would you like? Like more melodic/normal rock, or more screaming metal? Just wondering.

  • wow random, well besides the fact that we would never be forced to add vocals.... I guess I would probably want more of melodic clean vocals, screaming would ruin the music. will never happen though!

  • Lol ok. Thanks for answering.

  • hey what doe u guys use to mute on the neck of yur guitar?

  • felt when we are recording. just our hands when playing live.

    -chris

  • Thanks and I just sit down and write this stuff. Im not paying attention to what Im writing, I just make sure I think it sounds great and then I go from there.

    -chris

  • If Paul Masvidal hasn't heard this music yet, I really think he would dig it.

  • He has, we know Paul. He likes it. We are touring with them next year!

  • If you don't come to the Maryland/D.C. area with this show, my life will be over.

That is one show that I will NOT miss!

  • Pretty sure Baltimore is the first date actually!

  • Awesome! I'll be the guy shouting, "I talked to you on youtube!".

  • i noticed when the guitarists and bass player record they play to a metronome...my band and i might start recording soon so im wondering, does the drummer use a metronome too or does he keep time and have everyone else record over it?

  • Thanks a lot!

Yes, he plays to a metronome. If he didn't, when all the guitars are tracked to a metronome and put over the drum tracks... they'll most likely be off.

    -chris

  • ok sweet! thats what i thought people would do when recording in the studio. thanks alot and keep rocking!

  • Comment removed

  • Ok.... now, I really WANT to see STS live.

  • lmfao at the ending..

i would love to be in a band like this it looks like u guys have lots of fun

  • I would love to see you guys post the solo from Age of The Tide. My favorite song

  • there is a clip of it in our Progressive Nation edits.

    -chris

  • I saw you guys in Montreal last night! You guys must have been stoaked to tour with Dream Theater. =D

Just wanna say it was a fucking awesome show, you guys are quickly becoming one of my favorite prog metal bands, keep it up! =D

  • Well thats great to hear!

Yeah it was amazing, our first arena show. I have to say I could get use to that.

    -chris

  • having the 8 string is a really cool addition to the usual twin guitar setup, it really enables you to double riffs on different octaves, especially with all the cross string riffing. are you able to get that riff in Dunes when the melody is doubled an octave lower because of the extra string? that riff is so killer, its got that real wall-of-sound quality to it.

  • thanks and yes!

    -chris

  • Anyone know what song 1:17 -1:27 is from?

  • hey buddy, that song is from the ending of "Dunes".

there is a video on youtube, just look under our favorites on our channel.

    -Chris

  • Hey thanks man!

    That riff is pretty badass!

I think its cool that you reply to these comments too.

  • yeah no problem, I do as much as I can

    -chris

  • im really liking the material guys! your bassist is incredible! i just wish you guys were touring Progressive Nation in the UK!

I know you guys are going to go far! : )

  • thanks a lot buddy, hope we do as well. I'm sure we'll make it over there one day, I wish we were on the Euro one as well, but we can't get greedy now can we! : )

    -chris

  • WOW you guys are playing Prog Nation with Dream Theater and Big Elf. I will be there! That will be the best show of the year. Do you guys by chance have the 3rd video of your studio recordings? I assume its drums and being a drummer I really wanna see it haha.

  • We have the third video, but when we upload it to youtube it doesn't play. Search vimeo, its on there.

And thanks a lot! We're all definitely really excited about the tour!

    -Chris

  • Hey guys this album is fantastic. Are you planning on touring California anytime soon? I would love to see you guys live if I get a chance.

  • Thanks a lot dude, and you bet we are.

We just landed a tour with Dream Theater.

Dates are posted on our myspace page. 2 dates in Cali.

links are under the video info.

    -Chris

  • I'm glad you guys are there, but I totally was stoked on seeing beardfish, that sucks, well, see you in calgary and edmonton

  • great! glad to hear you are going to make 2 shows.

    -chris

  • cant wait till you guys come to dallas i just got into you so i missed the last show but come back soon

  • cool dude, we'll hopefully be back up that way on tour this fall.

  • nice cant wait to see u guys

  • i use a marshall cab, a randall g3 150 head, schecter hellraiser with emgs but i am getting an engl over the summer after reading that you guys use them

  • yeah thats all completely different gear. hit me up when you at least get the ENGL and we'll go from there.

  • do you guys have any tips to getting a tone similar to your i back off the gain and the sound is too thin but what sort of eq settings do you use

  • well it all depends on your guitar, pickups, and the head and cab you are using. what are you using?

    -chris

  • amazing stuff as always guys.

anyways, you are obviously trained musicians so what books/teachers should I look into to better my playing?

  • Music warriors you are....don't let the biz drag your thing down...proudly fly the instrumental flag!

  • of course!

  • that cloth you put on the neck is so it doesn't have that vibrating/rattling right?

  • just keeps out all unwanted extra noise.

  • what is the best way to drink dr pepper?

  • Slowly, to savor all the amazing flavors. lol.

  • Is that sherman, how much did that run you?

  • yes its a Sherman, I dont discuss what i pay for my guitars, plus I endorse them.

    -chris

  • lol

  • yeah man, i would never really play that guitar. I'm more of a hardtail guy anyway.

  • haha, yeah the studio had it. I had to play it. it wasn't on any of the recordings, promise.

  • First found you guys on Myspace before you released monument. Bought Monument and and have been hooked since. You guys are mind blowing!

  • Thanks a lot.

     -Chris

  • when i heard the drums on "rode in on horseback" i was hooked!

  • hey Chris I ordered my cd/t-shirt combo on Wedensday ( I ordered the Giants shirt), I am so pumped! I love you guys!!! God bless

  • Awesome dude! Thanks for the support!

    -Chris

  • No problem dude I am going to spread the word about you guys!!!

  • Hey Chris I ordered my shirt/cd 10 days ago and it still hasn't showed up.. I am not trying to be antsy but could you tell me when it might possibly show up? I usually don't have to wait this long for stuff to come in :/

  • It will be coming shortly. I personally ship all orders on tour and we just got home yesterday. So I'm catching up on orders all day today. Thanks for being patient though, I'm the same way, I want my stuff the next day, haha.

    -Chris

  • Thanks man, I am looking forward to it showing up! God Bless!

  • Hey man my stuff showed up and I am COMPLETELY blown away!! The music on the album is freaking jaw-dropping. The skill you guys have blows my mind, thank you for amazing music!!! It was worth the wait!

    God Bless

  • Awesome, glad to hear that! Thanks again for ordering it.

    -Chris

  • i just purchased 3 shirts off of their site and I got an email personally from Chris cuz there was an issue with my order.

Dude you're amazing - you play in the band, you take the time to respond to youtube comments, and you even deal with merchandise issues! Is there anything you don't do?! lol :P

  • I pretty much do everything dude!

    -chris

  • Hey guys AMAZING MUSIC!!! I have been looking for a good instrumental/progressive band for a while and you guys definately fit the bill! I have been into stuff like Between the Buried and Me, Opeth, and Cynic for a while but you guys just take it up a notch! One question, do I HAVE to order the new album online or can I find it at like FYE?

  • Yeah you can find it at some FYE, Best Buy, and Hot Topic. Its a better deal for you to order it from our store though. Its about the same price but you get a ton of free stuff!

  • Awesome bro I think I will order the t-shirt/cd combo when I get some more money. You guys are sooo amazing, even my girlfriend likes you guys!!!

  • im in love with this sound. been listening to carving desert canyons for a few months now and just enjoying every song. one thing i dont understand completely is the tuning you guys play in lol a friend of mine said alot of experianced jazz players tune that way but still confuses me

  • I'm seeing you guys on the first of May; probably gonna buy a shirt.

  • awesome, we'll have like 15 different designs to choose from!

    -chris

  • Haven't seen one bad comment yet about you guys and i see why! :D Loving the music, I think this is my 4th post in 10 minutes haha!

  • haha, yeah, any bad ones I see are on videos posted by other people, its because those people probably see that we read and respond to comments posted on our videos. There will always be someone who dislikes a band, not a big deal though. Thats with all bands.

  • whats the point of putting the rag on the neck @ 1:17?

i've seen a TON of musicians do it and i'm wondering why

  • helps keep the strings you're not playing quiet, so you dont have any extra unwanted noise getting on the recording.

  • so where exactly am i gonna want to put the rag and how?

  • depends on what you're playing.

also, if you have to make sure that you aren't using open strings, since that will obviously not work, since it would mute the note.

most of the time its used when tracking solos, or playing tapping parts. anywhere from the 1-4th fret.

  • Question about your mixing of the album. I notice that on the previous album there was alittle more bottom end in the drum kit. On this album the bass drum seems to be toned down abit. Any insight into why?

  • its actually not, it just sounds like that since the guitars were so empty/thin sounding on the last album. the bass and drums really stood out a lot more. on this album we wanted to make sure we didn't mess up there guitars again, making them a lot thicker, heavier and smoother.

    -chris

  • As much as i loved the First Album, Your right the guitar tone was Shit hahahahahahahah better than mine though i'm stuck with a Line6 Spider 3 and i feel like Killing Myself. I'm really Surprised you guy's use Powerball's too!!! It's nice to see a Non- Death Metal band using one for a change. Oh by the way, your way of drinking Dr. Pepper is really the BEST:)

  • haha, thanks man, all about a great Dr. Pepper. I need an endorsement from them.

  • Come tour up in Ohio! PLEASE!

Just found you guys from GW mag a couple months ago, immediately bought Monument and now Desert Canyons... 8 strings is way to much, dude.

  • thanks a lot. we'll make it up there eventually.

8 strings is not really that much when there are guys out there playing 11 and 12 string basses. not octave strings, 11 and 12 individual strings.

  • hi guys, found you in an issue of Guitar World Mag... was interested to see what you're all about... music is amazing! I imagine you've answered this before but I can't find the answer anywhere: what's up with the mufflers up high on the necks? just to keep things from getting too noisy with all the tapping? air freshener?

  • thanks a lot dude.

yeah its a felt rag to help with unwanted noise, not just for tapping. you can just have it on when you are playing anything that doesn't involve open strings, keep everything extra quiet.

    -chris

  • well thats awesome and I appreciate that.

    -chris

  • I worked with Danielle out in Indian Wells this March and she hooked me up with "Carving Desert Canyons"; I just heard it for the first time today: FREAKIN AMAZING! I love instrumental work, especially of the progressive kind and you guys don't fail to dissappoint. I'm definitely dropping your name in the music forums and with friends.

  • Seriously I have watched this video so many times....Chris you influenced me to change my way of thinkin about guitar....melodeath is good but it gets bland...this is fresh and just pure genious I should change my name...LMFAO ScaleTheSummitOwnsYou...but you guys are too cool to seem conceited...You should deff come to ontario I would love to see you guys live

  • Haha, yeah man. So is your name after the classic song by Cynic? Or the band Veil Of Maya?

Glad to hear that I have influenced you dude. I promise not to tell you to jump off any bridges, haha.

Keep up that guitar playing. We'll make it up there eventually. We plan to tour full time, just takes a little while to get to that point. We have a big agent now, so he'll definitely help us with that.

    -chris

  • CYNIC!!!!!!

  • lol 1:50

  • Hi guys, I read somewhere that you went to MI. What was your experience there Im considering going for a Bachelors Degree?

  • It was of course awesome. Me and Travis moved out there not only to get better but to find a bassist and drummer to form this band. Teachers there are amazing as well. It was great, I miss going there.

    -Chris

  • Thats awesome, are a lot of students looking to form bands there? Also, what degree did you guys do, AA, of Bachelors?

  • Its called "Journeymans" or something like that. its a not a "real" degree. They offer Bachelors, but I didn't want to do 4 years of college when you can do it in 2, just without the academics.

  • You guys are totally up there with Cynic in terms of innovation and progressiveness, at least in my books. I just hope you plan on releasing more then an album every 14 years. Planning on getting your guys' albums also!

  • thanks a lot, we'll definitely be releasing albums on a regular basis. they look like they are here to stay this time though!

    -chris

  • why didnt i hear of you guys sooner. YOUR ALL AWESOME!!!!!

  • we're still a young a band, thats why. glad you found out about us though and really liked it!

  • I like the 7/8 tapping part with the 4/4 met. Also feel free to check out my band From the Embrace we're prog metal from Florida.

    Keep it proggy

    -Rory

  • thanks buddy, appreciate it.

  • omfg i love this band! I've been listening to them for so damn long. I remember finding them on myspace and waiting for monuments to come out. I played that cd all day every day since the day it came out and the new album is just as good. Fucking guys are amazing musicians. keep it up guys! (come to N.Y. :)

  • Thanks a lot man, appreciate all that. Glad to hear you have been following our progress for so long. We'll hopefully be up that way this summer. Our label and agent are in the works on more tour stuff, we definitely want it.

    -chris

  • ESP LTD DJ-600 My Guitar YAY haha well just sold it really for a 7 string schecter hellraiser nothing like your 8 string or that 7 music man [that i wish i had instead] but its alright haha

  • I'm not saying you guys need one or anything, but I'm just curious: Why'd you guys decide not to add a singer?

The tapping pattern at 1:17 is really groovy by the way. I also really like your guys' choice and placement of harmonies. It's very satisfying to the ol' ear hole.

    Keep it up!

  • exactly what you just said. We dont "need" one. We write all of our music to be full with out one, and if we added one, it would ruin what we have going.

and thanks a lot for the compliment!

    -chris

  • Ah ok, I see. I was just curious. I'm sorry, you probably get that question a lot. This way the technical components and such can really be appreciated to their fullest

  • its all good. we don't get that question as much as we used to... especially as the more and more established we get. But I do get it from time to time in interviews still.

    -chris

  • ive finally found the perfect blend of technicality and emotional touch. plus the instrumental nature doesnt help either ;)

  • thanks!

  • ill trade you my left leg for your 8 string... so how bout it?? lol

  • when it starts to rot it would loose its tone though.

  • no way man, you obviously know nothing about tone. lol

  • Absolutely in love with this band.

Truly inspirational. I am a drummer, and have been for 4 years now, and listening to those riffs, just, so many possibilities..so...perfect, I am REALLY looking forward to seeing more of you guys. Everything just comes together so perfectly and fluently. Great job Scale The Summit, just know, if you need roadies, I am SO there!

  • thanks a lot buddy, really appreciate all that, going to be a while until we're forced to hire roadies. all we roll with is a merch guy for now

    -chris

  • Very refreshing! This band is amazing..masters of their art. Looking forward to seeing more of them.

  • thanks a lot. hopefully you'll get your chance, we dont plan on going anywhere.

  • i can honestly say

you are the most original band currently out there

    straight up amazing

    :]

  • appreciate that! -chris

  • It's really cool to watch this again, after hearing the songs on your new album in their entirety.

Im all like, "thats when he's playing in Dunes, awesome!" and so on.

    like it a lot.

  • thanks a lot!

  • You guys are a very impressive band! I had no faith in the Houston music scene, but you guys made me regain hope, haha. Great playing, maybe by some magical moment we'll play together here in H town.

  • awesome dude, thanks a lot!

  • no bands really inspired us to play instrumental. me and travis wrote our first song 4 years ago and thought it sounded great instrumental, so we went with it.

bands/artists that inspire me to keep making music are Cynic, John Petrucci, Guthrie Govan, Opeth, and more.

thanks for the compliments by the way!

  • My friend told me about you guys and mentioned that you sound a bit like cynic. After listening to the new album I agree with him. And now that you confirmed that you are inspired by cynic... well, that just proves that you are influenced by cynic :D

Great stuff guys, love the new album :)

  • who was that playing the dan jacobs signature model guitar?

  • that was me, its not on the album. we were on a break and I was playing around it. haha

    -chris
