Key to this issue is that some of his students were his FB "friends". Do I feel that he should be in a class, no I don't think he should be teaching children. Do I agree with what Mr. Buell believes about homosexuals, no I do not agree with him at all. NARTH and Exodus do not claim the ability to cure homosexuality. Only 22% of those who want to change are able to suppress their desires, not change, just suppress only 0-2% claim to actually change. This is from NARTH’s web site.

2b. As for the consequences of those comments, he is quite willing to stand firm on the foundation of Scripture to support his beliefs. We commend Mr Buell for the courage of his convictions. Interestingly, even the ACLU supports his Constitutional right to freedom of speech.
@LibertyCounsel The ACLU's charter is to support the freedom of speech for everyone, even the KKK, Westboro Baptist Church and bigots like Buell. That doesn't change the fact that his hateful comments towards a segment of the community are disgusting.
2a. Facebook is open to the public; however, it is not legally true that Mr Buell's remarks on FB automatically transfer into his classroom. The Santa Rosa County Florida case that Liberty Counsel just settled clearly makes the distinctions between school district employee's private vs public time, location and comments. Mr Buell is, in fact, entitled to his Constitutional right to say whatever he so chooses.
1b. Although many "scientific" articles touting such homosexual predisposition studies are still being published, such a predisposition has not been found to be either reliable nor replicated. Recently, the homosexual lobby has suggested they abandon the homosexual gene theory because they now believe they have enough cultural and political power to gain acceptance and silence those who disagree with their agenda.
1a. There is no credible nor empirical research that confirms homosexuality is genetic. In addition, about ten years ago, homosexual researchers sought a genetic predisposition similar to the fact that 10% of the overall general population is genetically predisposed to alcholism (more prominent in males than females) and the fact that 10% of the US population is predisposed to depression (more prominent in females than males).

Schools require you to act ethically. His employer, the school, had made it quite clear that for teachers in their employ, facebook was NOT to be considered private communication especially when he had as "friends" former and CURRENT students. His first amendments rights have not been violated, he went against his contract with his employer. Once again the principle of the first amendment is being distorted to support a bigoted worldview. He was not arrested or jailed for his comments, he was suspended from his job.

I suspect he is generally a fine teacher, but his posting shows poor judgment, mostly in the language he used, and an underlining bigotry I would not want my kids subjected to.
Buell must have signed the code of ethics when he took the job, voluntarily sacrificing his 'right' to be a prejudiced bigot for the sake of the children in his care. How is he supposed to teach students (who might be effeminate gay men or 'butch' lesbians) about LGBT historical figures? The code of ethics is a contract, and I sincerely hope this bigot does not teach again.
While I believe in the 1st Ammendment rights, words have consequences. If a person chooses a profession that involves shaping young minds, he/she has to shelve his personal feelings about any form of discrimination. I believe that Mr. Buel should be allowed to return to the classroom...after he's been schooled himself with some sensitivity training. Words can harm.

That is the issue here...that free speech can not only be allowed when it makes everyone feel "comfortable". Key to this issue is that some of his students were his FB "friends". Those of you arguing that his free speech rights trump everything miss the point that he directly exposed his students to his bigotry, and certainly offended his gay students. Whether he's in the classroom or sitting at home at his desk, they are still his students. It's simply unethical to expose them to his bigotry, or even his christianity for that matter. His poor judgment crossed a line and he should not be teaching.

His comments may be tasteless and ignorant, but he does have a right to make them. I do not know if he has violated the school's policies or not, that is between him and the school. Consider that he has been teaching for a long time though, and apparently does a decent enough job. Do a few ill conceived comments on facebook undermine all his credibility as an educator? There are no easy answers to be found here, but it does raise some interesting ethical questions.

The foundations of Gender Identity begin early in life, as early as two years old and so once damage is done to the Gender Identity of the child it is almost an irreversible damage. These teachers are signatories to a Code-of-ethics when they take their jobs, that regulate various public activities that they may engage in outside of work. His Facebook postings were public AND available for his students to read. He was suspended pending an investigation into whether this violates the Code-of-ethics. If so, he CAN rightfully be fired or reassigned.

His employer, the school, had made it quite clear that for teachers in their employ, facebook was NOT to be considered private communication especially when he had as "friends" former and CURRENT students. His first amendments rights have not been violated, he went against his contract with his employer. Once again the principle of the first amendment is being distorted to support a bigoted worldview. Sexual behavior is a choice, but sexual orientation is not, it is as innate as skin color.
It is impossible to change sexual orientation. Every ex-gay will tell you they have not changed, they struggle with their homosexuality every day, they only oppress their desires, and they do not change.
Exodus and NARTH, the two largest reparative groups state this fact on their web sites.

The emotion that causes SSA can change. The design of our bodies make it clear that homosexual orientation isn't innate. Why do the bodies of "gay" people produce sperm or eggs if they were born gay or if homosexuality is innate? The homosexuality-is-innate concept just doesn't add up and I'm not buying it.

What an absurd concept!
The design of the human body has nothing to do with sexual orientation.
Sexual orientation cannot change. In over 50 years of prayer and counseling, not one single person has ever changed their sexual orientation. Ex-gays will tell you they have not changed, they only oppress their desires.

Because we are human. We are exactly like every other human except we have a natural attraction to people of the same gender. That is the only difference.
Why would you think we would be infertile?

We are still capable of reproduction, just because we are attracted to the same sex, does not mean we can’t reproduce.
Why would the body not produce sperm and eggs, just because a person is attracted to the same gender?
An entire physical change do to sexual orientation is absurd. Your theory is absurd.
