  • @flameboy2961 Yes, I rode it from New Orleans to Birmingham (I believe it was Birmingham). Didn't take any pictures though. I went incognito on that trip, pretending to be a real person instead of a railfan. Looking back, I wish I hadn't done that, I missed some really great photo ops.

  • I blame the government for the decline of the train. Sure, it prevented an overpowered elite that stood unopposed (1880's) but we've lost something in the process. Ike's highways and air travel did its toll, but trains will come back.

Cars will become too costly, and air travel is too painful. Where I live, (Detroit) it's faster to go by train than plane.

Unknowingly, the government that taxed railroads to death will help to stimulate rail travel through overly complicated security procedures

  • No actually at :40 to :51,thats the Chicago Milwaukee and North shore, leaving its Milwaukee depot, going south across the 6th street viaduct.

Look close it cuts, then and films the Milwuakees Hiawatha leaving Everate street depot.:51 to :57.

  • @ryanschofield4494 Yes, and not "just" North Shore, its an Electroliner. If interested you can see more from this in my "NMRA/Speedrail, September 2, 1950" video in the Trains and More Trains playlist.

  • I'm back! I love the part "Some kids don't even seem to know that milk comes from a cow.". It's so true. People these days are so caught up in Facebook, Twitter and stuff like that. They never really stop, slow down and think about the simple things in life. This is still a great song in my books. Thanks for Uploading it.

  • @Bus7777

    So True.

  • This is the first time I saw this video and certainly won't be the last. I love this song and lots off Classic trains!

  • @Bus7777 Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. Lots more good music and classic trains in my other posts.

  • good ol B&O

  • 'Tis a great song..one that brought a tear to my eyes, since someone asked me why they were wasting time fixing tracks instead of getting rid of them. But we are at last fixing our mistake of letting them go--trains and streetcars are coming back, despite the trucking and auto industries wanting them gone. Welcome back to the great railroads.

  • @amazonboxer well, the auto industries are starting to disappear, so it looks like a good day to be a railroad compared to a car company

  • At 1:50, what train is that, an interurban or a diesel railcar (ACF perhaps?)?

  • That is an interurban on the Illinois Terminal, filmed by my dad in June 1953. Also, there is a quick glimpse of a North Shore Electroliner at 0:44 in this video.

For more IT see my video "Seen Around St. Louis, June 1954."

  • Sorry, that should say "...filmed by my dad in June 1954."

  • With ten dollar gas coming. Alot of smart people will know what a train is. It really did look bad for trains for years. But with high speed rail, this song is not true anymore. Amtrak has been breaking ridership records for 5 years now.

  • p.s. i will play this song with pics

  • near my town there is the town called chaska where train used to go all the time (told by my friend maryland.) but now it's sniff sniff exempt:'( i wanna restore it as a narrow gauge line

  • The A train is one of the subway trains that go from one end of NYC to the other; senic.

    Cheers.

    from,

    del-boy.

  • Thanks for clearing that up (;-))

  • Dear go., A very nice revisit of your boyhood reviving this film; thanks for sharing it with us. . Other than the beautiful machinery, the film and your accompanying story, reveal much social and economic history. . There were lots of exciting things happening in the new world, after the war; things were especially exciting in the United States. . Favorited. Cheers. from, del-boy.
  • RIP u utah phillips.

  • that's a nice shot of a Ps-4 at the beginning. Really gives you an idea of just how much those beauties stood out from the crowd.

  • Beautifully done video and Utah Phillips NAILED it; wrote it too.

I work at the B&O Museum in Ellicott City, Maryland, the first station in America.

    Good stuff. Thanks!

  • terrific video. thanks for sharing such vintage footage.

  • What editing software did you use?

  • I use Ulead Video Studio 6 for the video, Jasc Paint Shop Pro 9 for the graphics, and Sound Forge 6 audio.

  • thanks a whole lot. my grandparents have always told me about the B&O, GN, PRR, EL, C&O, SRY, B&M, and so many more fallen flags. its nice to see most of them again

  • Now THIS is vintage footage! Great song too.

  • Thank you for posting this. Utah Phillips sings this song. I heard this song nearly 10 years ago on a railroad cd. This makes me feel content.

  • Awesome! It conjures up lots of images in my mind bringing back memories of my childhood days when I was just as inquisitive towards my Dad whenever I saw a train.

  • Cool! Some NYC and Hiawatha! I've always liked NYC.
