Ronan, I'm at a recording school in Ontario Canada and we have lots of good mic's here... I'm just curious what are your typical mics for snare bottom? I usually reach for a small diaphragm condenser or 57.
I'm a recording arts student, in Newfoundland, Canada. I already have a number of dynamic mics and now I am looking for a good condenser mic. I have about a $1000-2000 budget . I was thinking about a AKG C414 or an Audio Technica AT4050. What do you think about those mics, what would you recommend of those or others?
@QueensChoice In that price range you might want to look at the Audio Technica AT-4060. Its cardiod only but a great sound. Ronan hello,i am far from my dream to rap,'cuz i want to record at home but i don't know what gear i need. Please help me (No to expensive) :) Thank you
@ste0nwowXgamer You need to keep checking out these types of videos online. Try to get the right information. Learn your skill and build a home studio. You will need a microphone, a computer, and a digital audio workstation or a recording program. There are a lot out there from Pro Tools, to Reason, to Reaper, to FL Studio. Its up to you to find which one works best. Make sure you use one that has a lot of plug ins or special FX attatched to it. The rest is up to you.
@ste0nwowXgamer To power your mic you need a pre-amp or a a USB Mic Converter. Try the Blue Icycle. It took me a few months to figure that out, you can have that information for free though because I'm a nice guy. But buy that only if you have only have one (1) mic to power. If you have other instruments such as a electric guitar, a synthesizer, or a beat machine, you will need a pre-amp with more than one outlet. I can't recommend which one because I don't know.
Hi Ronan great vid! Really could use your Help!!!!!! I’m looking for a decent mic pertinent to rap vocals. Tried the USB AT2020 condenser but found its way to sibilant for my voice even with a pop filter! Was looking at the SM58, however, from the reviews it seems a little muddy/dull. Any suggestions???? Many thanks Paul!
@yusuf1608 an SM58 is not muddy or dull, The album I just finished mixing we used an SM58 for lead vocals on almost the entire album. It will not have the really bright top end of a cheap condenser but it is a great sounding mic on many voices.
Hello, I'm Martin with a question on mics. For our recording studio I have MXL 990's, fat and pencil condensers. Woud those fall under the "bad" condenser mic category. I personally like them and are bright and capture pretty good sound but what is your opinion?
Hi Ronan please tell me i have 3000 dollars to buy a condenser microphone for recording stuidio. i will record the vocal and the guitar, so i think about Neumann u 87 ai, but there is one problem i also think about Nuemann tlm 103 and plus an avalon 737 preamp, if i`ll buy neumann u 87 i will not be able to buy preamp now, please tell me if there is a big difference between these two mics,
@MrLittlemurder The U87 is a very cool mic. I am not a fan of the TL103. I think there are much better mics (that are on par with the new U87s) for the same money or less.
@MrLittlemurder ..I found for recording... Neumann, for the U87..are charging the price of a Reference Tube mic. If you are in U87 price range try and find a good price on a AKG C12VR or a Manley Ref C..because THAT is what you are paying for. In high end solid state species, which the U87 is..I understand the Shure KSM32 & AKG414XLS are up there..but at an apro.price. I have big ears and maybe can hear sounds that only dogs hear but U87 sounds like it is missing sd above a cert. hearable freq.
Thx for a great show! Please help me, which microphone is better for vocal and acustic guitar: sm57 , sm57 beta, sm58, sm58 beta, audio technica 2020 ?
Hi Ronan, good video, I'm Cesar, from Perú. I've a question, I have two shure PG58 mics which I use only for vocal, in my radiodrama recordings, and I'm very happy. You talk about the shure SM57 as a vocal mic. I really enjoy a mic that preserves the low frequencies of the voice instead of the high tones. To improve my level of recording, what mic would you recommend me?
@anglasrabines If you want more low end, experiment with proximity effect, ei getting really close to your mic. The will actually boost the low end. You see radio DJs do this all the time.
@RonansRecordingShow Hi im looking to buy a studio mic. im not setting up a studio i just want to record dsome of my raps (i hope that doesnt change your mind about responding to me) i need something $50 or below likre i said im not going into setting up mixers. and what not, i just need a decent sounding mic, btw could you possibly tell me what those things are people but next to mics when they rap? thanks :)
Great video man! Hey guys, I was wondering if I could have some help, Im looking for a good microphone for rapping and beats. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi Ronan! Thx for a great show! I'm having a little dilemma and wondered if you could help me? Im planning on buying a condenser mic. As i see it now with my budget I have two options. 1) buy the shure ksm32 and use the preamp on my desktop konnekt 6 interface (far from pro interface i know). 2) buy a preamp, i was thinking the GA Project Pre-73, and the MXL V67 condenser mic. I don't really know which of these two options is wiser? Thanks alot and sorry for the long comment. /Juha
Got a MXL 2001 for around $80 used. Probly not a good deal huh? It sounds alright, but not too professional. I'm only doing vocals. Need a good mic for Under $200. Any advice would be appreciated.
Ronan, I'm investing in a condenser mic that I will be using for about 90% vocals and 10% live instruments and live sampling. I produce hip-hop music and some electro. I was looking to spending up to 300 dollars, and so far I've found the Audio Technica AT2050 and the Blue Spark to be reasonable. I was wondering what you would recommend?
Would you recommend a usb mic compared to a mic under 100 say.. an at2020 with a cheap usb converter such as the Blue Icicle. Like. The at2020 usb vs the at2020 xlr with the icicle?
@iAmRyet I do not have much experience with the usb mics, but I would generally recommend getting one with a standard XLR connector and using an external interface, because in a few years USB could be gone on many computers. I think the XLR standard for mics will be around for many more decades.
I've got a Samson CL8 Large Diaphragm Condenser Mic... could you tell me how good or bad it is... I've done a couple recordings with it... and to me it sounds great also because Im just starting recording and kinda mixing but I'd rather get advice from a much experienced person in recording like you... I got a video in my channel that was recordrd with it...maybe you could hear it and tell me how the quality sounds to you? Im still saving to get me the Shure mic you were talking about,....
@stefanopunkskate I have not used that mic, but if you think it sounds great, keep using it and have fun with it. Experiment with other mics when you get the chance and you will start to see if you like others better down the road, but make cool music with what ever you have got.
Hi Ronann, would this mic work well with a soprano vocalist with high pitch articulation? I want something that will give body, but I also need to keep a certain sharpness to the high notes, so the diction is clear. Also I don't wantt to lose the character of the voice... any suggestion?
Damn there are so many mics! Ronan, what would you advice me? I got: blue yeti; mxl 990; mxl v67g and akg perception 120. I really don't know what is the best for vocals. Like they not too expensive just right for my budget. I really need your help.
@BergDox If you have all those mics, just try singing into all of them and try to compare them (with the levels matched as close as possible). See which one sounds best. The one that is best on my voice might not be the same as what sounds best on your voice.
Hi Ronan, I'm looking for a good condenser mic to record a soprano vocalist with some high pitch articulation, not operatic. I want something professional but to crazy pricey, do you have any recommendations for me?
So I went to my local music shop to find out more about the KSM32, and the salesperson told me that he recommended an AKG C214 which is about $200 less. Have you used/heard the C214 and if so what is your opinion of it? Gunna be a christmas present so a reply would be greatly appreciated!!
ok...soooo...i decidet to go with mxl v67 mic but i need to buy a sound card and a phantom power....so what u suggest to buy in total to lets say about 750 dollars(mic+card + phantom)????pls answer quick santa must come !!!!!:))))thank you!!!
@RonansRecordingShow ok so i guess i can buy a better usb interface than a sound card...the mic is about 100 usd.what do u reccomend to buy??? ,i trust you so much,u are a real proffesional not like others...i just want this for a home project(a little one:P)So i buy the mic and the usb interface and i can record...right???sorry that im suck a geek but i just begin to learn this stuff. My appologies!!!have a god night!!
@RonansRecordingShow i have a question. I have Blue Snowball mic for recording. I've noticed when i compared my Raw unedited vocal quality was not same quality as a studio vocal quality. You know when you listen to your vocal quality it seems to match with the quality of the instrumental/background music? Mine doesn't, although it sounds clear, but i can still tell that it's not up to a par so do you know any mic that can be good for a fair price? ($100-300)
I have sm57's, a CAD e70, an AKG Perception 200, and a CAD Trion 7000. If I were to use a PreSonus TubePre, would I just be muddying things up? I don't want to use any equipment that isnt really neccesary.
Could you answer a question for me? I do voice acting at home, and I was wondering what would be the best microphone for a relatively low price that wouldn't give me white noise. I know I can use audacity, but I've tried it and the program really doesn't do what I need for the projects.
thanks this vid really helped i already thought bout shure 57 n 58 . so im gunna get 1 of them now . im working on a pc . ive got fl studio 10 producer edition , and i need an interface to run a dynamic mic . it is for rap , u got any recommendations . i could get a cheaper 1 but im not sure how much that will affect my recording quality , i want cd quality . reply would be gr8 thanks for ur time :)
@TaddWagner21 The 58 and 57 are electronically the same mic with a different body and wind screen. They are both good for either voice or instruments. the 58 has the advantage on vocals because of the wind screen that is optimized for hand held vocal recording.
i really want to start recording my own music, i tend to play on piano but sometimes guitar and while singing. I have no idea what a good mic would be or type of mic to choose from(dynamic or condenser). would i need to get anything else like an audio interface or any extra cables to. i just want to be able to record my own stuff and it sound good and i need advice, thanks so much!
This video is great. I'm actually thinking about taking the next step and buying a microphone. Do the ones you are talking about are also suitable for 'lyrical' vocals? I sing pretty high, my voice sounds a lot like the singer of Within Temptation (Sharon Den Adel) and when I used to sing in shitty cheap microphones, there would always be a lot of parasites because of the high pitch.... -_-
hay dude i do heavy metal/scream o and i also do clean vocals what is the recomended micraphone for me?and should i use a specific amp or just any one? thanks and i love ur vids ur beast haha
@666BeastNinja A good mic to try for that stuff is a Shure SM7B. Great for lots of things but handles screaming well to. Use the best mic pre amp you can. A good mic pre will make all your mics sound better.
Thanks again Ronan, I ve watched this several times and I would have to agree the Shure SM57 is a perfect "1st microphone". It was my first mic based on recomendation from people in the know around here. I made my first recordings with it exclusively, and I still fight to make things sound as good as those first ones. I love my condensers, but the SM57 is one I want more of .......... amazing for drums.
hey bro, i really like ur studio and u seem very knowledgable, i have a budget of upto 200 dollars and want to get a vocal microphone for hip hop and vocals,
(rap), whats would u recomend for my situation, the best possible one in 200 dolalarish?
@agshowtime1592 For that budget you could get both a used MXL V69 and a used Shure SM58. They you would have two good options for different sounds. Or you could save a little more money and get a Shure KSM32 which is a truly great mic.
@RonansRecordingShow thanks a lot bro, i will defiantly do so, and what software should i look toward to pt on my mac to record with? i really appreciate it
@agshowtime1592 If you are on a mac, start having some fun on garage band. It comes free with the mac and you can definitely do some cool stuff with it. Lots of different options when you are ready to step up to something more pro. I use pro tools but most of the software out there is pretty good.
@RonansRecordingShow U seem like you know alot about music and stuff, what is a graet mic for hip hop vocals. People keep telling me that the ksm32 is for instruments and stuff but i wanted to check in with u to ask you how true you think that is because youve been using it for a long time and Im really leaning towards the ksm32 or audio technica at4033. Which do u think is best??? PLEASE ANSWER!!!
Hi Ronan or Anyone lol. I have a M-Audio pro fire 610 Sound-Card, and i am wanting to buy the MXL V67 will it be ok? and i am needing a stand for it and a reflection shield, will it all connect together ok and fit, if that makes sense, sorry for awkward question. Thanks again,
@RonansRecordingShow What´s your preference between the Shure KSM32 and the Neumann TLM102? My thoughts are to reproduce a clean smoth sound for vocals. Thanks a lot mate!
@RonansRecordingShow Hello there Mr Murphy. I am looking to start a budget home recording rig specifically to record my vocalist. I am looking to use SM57 and run it thru Alesis io2 express to the computer. Do you think we are good?
@RonansRecordingShow What about the new Shure KSM42 and/or KSM44A, do you think that for vocals they would do a better job than the KSM32?? If yes, which one would you pick up? Considering that my bugdet is up to $1000 is there anything better than the ones I mentioned?? (If you have the time please answer) Thanks a lot for you help!
@syakrikhalid For vocals I would put in a few extra bucks in a SM58. It's the same as the 57 besides some frequency differences, which makes the 58 better for vocals. The 58 also has a built-in pop filter under the grill. The 57 does not.
There a vid on my page that says so you think u can rap...can you give some advice on how to improve that quality...and ignore the ending I totally screwed that part up lol!
hey Ronan found the video very useful I just got into all of this stuff and looking to record hip hop vocals the mxl sounds like a good choice I will be using Audacity unless there is a more user freindly program you would recommend I was wondering what else I would need to go directly into the computer is a preamp necessary and are usb mics out of the question? thanks
Hey man, loving the videos and how you're helping people with advice!I'm looking to record my vocals and guitar with a good microphone and maybe even use an interface for recording the guitar(not a must as long as my guitar sounds good). My budget is around 200-300 dollars. Do you have any suggestions (and yes i know you don't wanna sound like an advertiser haha)
@RonansRecordingShow hey dude, i need some advice. i'm looking at usb condenser mics as i'm just starting up and i'm not so sure how to use pre amps. i wanna record vocals mainly. so i am thinking of either audiotech at2020 or blue yeti pro. any ideas? thanks :)
I've got a Samson R31S and in order for people to hear background music when singing I have to turn the volume on my pc up all the way and even then its still not that loud also I've got the problem that if I turn the noise suppression on then you can't hear the background music at all but you also can't hear the background static either. I want for people to hear both me and the background music but not the background static noise
i have a behringer c1 and it makes a cracklin sound wen im recording vocal....the vocal sound nice but the crackle is stil at the bak of the recording.....how can i fix that?
What microphone would i use if i wanted to record a radio making strange noises or the environment outside like the rain, my SM57 cannot do this. What microphone would i be looking for?
@StannSSS An SM57 could do this, but you need a mic pre with a log of gain. I would usually choose a condenser for this kind of work. Which one would depend on your budget.
@RonansRecordingShow Im currently using an Shure X2U what good value for money pre amps could i buy, so i can get this job done, as i cant get enough gain to record my acoustic guitar either with the X2U.
have you ever used a Sterling Audio ST51 Large Diaphragm FET Condenser Microphone this is my first mic it costed a hundred it sounds pretty good to me but im no professional just learning but yeah just wondering if you or anyone else you know of have ever used this thnks for any replys
@slsanders90 Lots of that old sinatra stuff was an RCA44 ribbon mic (there are several people making clones of these now). Word has it that while on Reprise he used the Shure/Unidyne 546 which is the predecessor to the Shure SM57
hey man i got a few questions so..i play alot of folk music on my acoustic and i need a microphone that will give me good quality thats within a price range of a 100$ or so and i also wanted to know if the microphones you showed in this video plug into the computer and record as an audio file because then i can mix it with the audio program i have on my computer thanks-Chase
Just curious about the Audio Technica series. You mentioned int he comments below that they are reported to be quite good. Are you aware of any difference between the 2020 and the 2050 ? cheers
Hi i really need help. Ive got a cheap microphone and i use a guitar amplifier with the mic but it doesnt sound good and is too quiet to hear me during band practice, so ive decided to buy some type of amplifier to get a louder sound. But heres the thing WHAT DO I BUY! do i get a microphone amp? a pa system? i dont know i just need some clear information.
@constantinehelmet Get a Shure SM57 and a good quality mic pre amp (and take the output of that into the line input of your interface). If that does not sound good its because the sound at the guitar amp is not good or the placement of the mic is not right.
@constantinehelmet What guitar amp are you using that can't get loud enough. You arent gonna get a clean pa ish system that is louder then most big amps without going all out
@ChrisFiveNina The -10dB is called a "pad" it lowers the output of the mic 10dB, which can be helpful is you are recording something really loud and your level is too high even with the mic pre turned all the way down. The upside down L is called a "high pass filter", that is a fancy way to say that it cuts the extreme low end frequencies off. There are times when its cool to use this, but you can just leave it off for starter. Not sure about "a middle"
I started my own home studio, I already have recorded myself and I loved the experience and the results. When I record my voice, I get a nice sound and I don't get out of tune but I think my voice is really thin, what mic do you recommend to record my voice that can warm it (I don't know if you know what I'm talking about).
@JoaoMGuitar First thing to try is to make sure the mic is in a cardioid pattern and sing very close to the make. This will actually put more low end in the voice because of something called "proximity effect"
Hi there. I am about to buy a shure 57 or the rode nt1a. I need for vocals and acoustic guitar. Home studio of course. Which one do you suggest me to buy? thanks in advance.
hi,im thinking of picking up the at2020 usb, gonna be recording electric and acoustic guitar, piano & vocals mainly, and maybe some drums. Im on a 130$ budget. Do you think the at2020 usb is a good buy fo that price range? Thanks in advance.
@ravstaman01 That would be a great start, but on a side note I would suggest you first try recording guitar with only 1 mic. that is what I do in almost all of my professional work.
Hey, I am in doubt between Shure KSM32 and the Rode NT2-A. I intend to buy one of these. It's just that I didn't hear you mention a lot about the vocal sound when using the KSM32, so I just wanted to have your opinion about which of these would be better for recording vocals and acoustic guitars. Very helpful video by the way! You got yourself a new subscriber!
@nicolinoperrucho Every mic is going to have its strengths and weaknesses for different sound sources, but over all I prefer the KSM32. I have a pretty big mic collection and on my own voice the ksm32 is the best mic I own (and I own much more expensive mics)
What type of Microphone is Best to record Choral voices...Mostly high soprano???without getting that breaking noise for the high notes? Please answer thanks aloot
@Razorhead777 There are a lot of good choices based on your budget and taste, but the important thing is to be careful of a lot of low cost condensers, because the capsules can often be very harsh sounding and create the sound you are referring to.
I LOVE THE WAY YOU PRESENTED THE SUBJECT! Very easy to understand, clear, succinct, EXCELLENT!! Please do some more presentations like this.. Thank you very much..
@msdutchess1987 thanks so much for the kind words. I have lots more videos but only a few are on youtube. google "Ronans Recording Show" and you will find my site where I have about 35 videos
@RonansRecordingShow oh yes, than you.. I have now seen some of your videos on your website, they are VERY GOOD. I have also subscribed to your site. Welldone and keep up the good work :)
Hey. You seem to know what your talking about and i hope you do because im needing help. Now i have just baught the KRK Rokit 6, And M-Audio ProFire 610 and hopefully getting Apple Mac With logic, Now is all this equipment ok for me to make and mix my music, and to transfer my fruity loops tracks as well. & I am after the MXL 990 what do you think of that please. Thanks
Hi, if i want to buy a condenser and want to connect it to a pc , and i can only buy a pre-amp (e.x. presonus tube pre ) OR an audio interface (e.x. fast track mkii), then what do i choose?I only want to record vocals andd acoustic guitar. i couldnt find this explained anywhere ... i m googling it for days...! (i ll also post this to your site...)
Hi man, thanks for the video! Really informative :) Just a quick question, I'm about to start my own home recording, using mainly vocals and acoustic guitar. My question is, should I be using one microphone to record both simultaneously, or should i get one mic for both vocal and guitar? Is it easier to edit them if they're recorded together or separate? Sorry if anything i just said sounded stupid, I'm new at this! Thanks again for the awesome video! :)
@ZiggyC743 Many people like to record guitar and vocals at the same time because it can help some musicians do better performances, but for the recording part its much easier to edit and mix when the guitar and vocal are recorded separately.
Hey Ronan, I'm confusede... can I record vocals plugging my microphone straight into > mixer into > pc... or microphone into > sound interface > pc without loss of sound quality?... thinking about budget wise because a lot of videos are saying it's mic > mixer > interface > pc ...
In the past few months, I've become very serious in the recording field. I've been doing MONDO research and looking up different (professional) producer/engineers opinions on what to get, what not to get, what to do, what not to do. I've watched HUNDREDS of videos on these subjects and you sir are one of the best and most helpful speakers I have come across so far. HUGE help. Thank you so much sir.
Ronan, I'm at a recording school in Ontario Canada and we have lots of good mic's here... I'm just curious what are your typical mics for snare bottom? I usually reach for a small diaphragm condenser or 57.

/Juha

Is it the MXL v67G? Or the v67Q?
BigBearfromthe206 1 month ago
Got a MXL 2001 for around $80 used. Probly not a good deal huh? It sounds alright, but not too professional. I'm only doing vocals. Need a good mic for Under $200. Any advice would be appreciated.
BigBearfromthe206 1 month ago
Ronan, I'm investing in a condenser mic that I will be using for about 90% vocals and 10% live instruments and live sampling. I produce hip-hop music and some electro. I was looking to spending up to 300 dollars, and so far I've found the Audio Technica AT2050 and the Blue Spark to be reasonable. I was wondering what you would recommend?
Chazilla3000 1 month ago
I've been hearing a lot about the stellar cm-6 mic, Have you tried it and if you did, what did you think about it
Breezebhard 1 month ago
Would you recommend a usb mic compared to a mic under 100 say.. an at2020 with a cheap usb converter such as the Blue Icicle. Like. The at2020 usb vs the at2020 xlr with the icicle?
iAmRyet 1 month ago

Im still saving to get me the Shure mic you were talking about,....
stefanopunkskate 2 months ago
@stefanopunkskate I have not used that mic, but if you think it sounds great, keep using it and have fun with it. Experiment with other mics when you get the chance and you will start to see if you like others better down the road, but make cool music with what ever you have got.

Hi Ronann, would this mic work well with a soprano vocalist with high pitch articulation? I want something that will give body, but I also need to keep a certain sharpness to the high notes, so the diction is clear. Also I don't wantt to lose the character of the voice... any suggestion?
MBCland 2 months ago
Damn there are so many mics! Ronan, what would you advice me? I got: blue yeti; mxl 990; mxl v67g and akg perception 120. I really don't know what is the best for vocals. Like they not too expensive just right for my budget. I really need your help.
BergDox 2 months ago
@BergDox If you have all those mics, just try singing into all of them and try to compare them (with the levels matched as close as possible). See which one sounds best. The one that is best on my voice might not be the same as what sounds best on your voice.
RonansRecordingShow 1 month ago
Hi Ronan, I'm looking for a good condenser mic to record a soprano vocalist with some high pitch articulation, not operatic. I want something professional but to crazy pricey, do you have any recommendations for me?
MBCland 2 months ago
@MBCland The KSM 32 I mentioned in this video would probably be a good one to try.
RonansRecordingShow 1 month ago
So I went to my local music shop to find out more about the KSM32, and the salesperson told me that he recommended an AKG C214 which is about $200 less. Have you used/heard the C214 and if so what is your opinion of it? Gunna be a christmas present so a reply would be greatly appreciated!!

TaddWagner21 3 months ago in playlist Favorite videos
@TaddWagner21 The 58 and 57 are electronically the same mic with a different body and wind screen. They are both good for either voice or instruments. the 58 has the advantage on vocals because of the wind screen that is optimized for hand held vocal recording.

@agshowtime1592 For that budget you could get both a used MXL V69 and a used Shure SM58. They you would have two good options for different sounds. Or you could save a little more money and get a Shure KSM32 which is a truly great mic.

nicolinoperrucho 4 months ago
@syakrikhalid For vocals I would put in a few extra bucks in a SM58. It's the same as the 57 besides some frequency differences, which makes the 58 better for vocals. The 58 also has a built-in pop filter under the grill. The 57 does not.

constantinehelmet 7 months ago
@constantinehelmet Get a Shure SM57 and a good quality mic pre amp (and take the output of that into the line input of your interface). If that does not sound good its because the sound at the guitar amp is not good or the placement of the mic is not right.

hey bro my mic has a swith with a -10db a middle and a symbol that kina look like a upside down L wat should i have it on wen i record?
ChrisFiveNina 7 months ago
@ChrisFiveNina The -10dB is called a "pad" it lowers the output of the mic 10dB, which can be helpful is you are recording something really loud and your level is too high even with the mic pre turned all the way down. The upside down L is called a "high pass filter", that is a fancy way to say that it cuts the extreme low end frequencies off. There are times when its cool to use this, but you can just leave it off for starter. Not sure about "a middle"

@Razorhead777 There are a lot of good choices based on your budget and taste, but the important thing is to be careful of a lot of low cost condensers, because the capsules can often be very harsh sounding and create the sound you are referring to.

I've watched HUNDREDS of videos on these subjects and you sir are one of the best and most helpful speakers I have come across so far. HUGE help. Thank you so much sir.
