This NBC season had the best mix of legendary tv stars. Carroll O'Connor,Bill Cosby, Sherman Hemsley, Bea Arthur, Betty White, Judd Hirsch, Richard Mulligan, Johnny Carson, Andy Griffith, Bob Hope, and Carol Burnett. Many used used to be on CBS.
Of all these shows, Night Court was my favorite. It was the most hilarious show of this era. .John Larroquette was one of the best sitcom actors of all time, after Don Knotts as Barney Fife of course.
Cliff Huxtable Conductinq ! Olivia On The Guitar ! Vanessa, Theo, Martin & Sondra Sinqinq "NBC" & Dancinq ! Dwayne Wayne Flashin Lights ! Jalessa & Ron Dancinq ! The Whole Cosby Clan Is In Here !
@nostalgiajunkie70 I was wondering about that. The smurfs were actually featured in several NBC promos throughout the 80s. It would've been awesome to have a Saturday Morning version of this promo with Kid n Play, Mario, Rick Moranis, SBTB and the guys next door. That lineup was one of the best in Sat. morning history.
@jwsu2003 ,I was 20 in 1990 and wasn't into cartoons anymore but the sitcoms were great. Fresh Prince, Cosby Show, Different World, Amen, 227, Cheers, Golden Girls, Night Court, Empty Nest..... I dont watch much TV anymore.
@jwsu2003 Mario bros. was where it's at. My older brother remembers it being on NBC. He said the saturday morning cartoons died on NBC in '92 when they put a lot of teen crap on there.
@crackaddict444 Seinfeld's first season was done awkwardly. It premiered in summer '89 and played a few episodes in the summer. Then when the actual '89-'90 season started, NBC didn't air any episodes. The summer of '90 they finished the last couple episodes. They only had a handful of episodes for the first season and I think they wanted to see how it would do before they put it on primetime. Seinfeld's second season started as a midseason replacement in Jan. '91
Can you imagine trying something like this today? I mean 3 whole minutes of just shilling their wears? Nobody would stand for it...you'd hear million of channels clicking. People don't have the patience for this sort of crap these days, and for once, I kind of agree...things like this were a waste of time.
@orchote speak for yourself. Look at all these hits in this promo. It's historic and for those that remember it's nostalgic. People these days need a little bit of patience then when it comes to tv
Love the Letterman clip- almost forgot he was on NBC. Hard to believe he bolted for CBS almost 17 years ago! And of course Johnny - late night's king, I wonder what he would think of the Leno/Conan mess...
Some classic shows here, Night Court and Cheers, but my absolute favorite was Unsolved Mysteries. The late Robert Stack's voice alone used to send chills up my spine! My Wednesday nights were usually spent watching The Wonder Years on ABC then switching to Unsolved Mysteries. Awesome!
I love this tune. I like all the different promo songs from all the networks but this is my all-time favorite of all! Lots of high energy and every time I listen to it, it perks me up when I have bad days. These TV networks need to bring back the promo songs to introduce the new seasons like they did back in the day! Old school television will ALWAYS be better than the crap we're forced to endure in this day and age. Thanks for posting this great video!
There's something strangely endearing about this video - NBC always had this way of selling itself like it was much more than a mere TV network, no no, it was part of your family. "We're all dancing and having an awesome time", etc. Nowadays there isn't that sense of innocent naivete about the media, and the only time you see commercials like this now is on 30 Rock when they're making fun of them (i.e. "It's Tennis Night!")
Ahhh, the good old days of NBC's wonderful line-up. I used to watch a good majority of these shows...and some later on in reruns - I love how Sam Beckett's (Scott Bakula) clothes keep changing a la his "body changes" on Quantum Leap!!! Classic!
All the best shows are represented here...but why didn't they show any clips of "Wings"...after all, Crystal Bernard dances here, but where were Tim Daly and Steven Weber???
I have read things posted by journalists about the downfall of broadcast television, and the one common thread is they never say about how unentertaining most tv shows are. All the money they spend producing shows and they couldn't come up with something as neat as Pawn Stars.
I've gotta echo what's been said; they just don't have lineups like this anymore. And they couldn't do a commercial like this anymore because all of the networks are so loaded with reality crap that neither they nor the people who watch can identify stars worth promoting. It's really sad.
Yeah; I could see if there was one for each network (barely), but half the stuff is reality or reality-based (like American Idol or America's Got Talent). It's great for the financial bottom line, but it means that, at the very least, there's little consistency year-to-year because nobody is a star beyond one year.
There will never be anything like this again, and it's sad. There are no huge stars anymore...look at the lineup there. There are no more beloved legends like Hope, Carson, O'Connor, and Andy in the prime time lineup anymore. There's nothing to get behind. We could have the human pieces of trash Jon and Kate up there, since that's all "entertainment" is anymore.
Although, I will say this...do you think that's the only thing Letterman ever plugged at NBC?
I say it all the time. And networks don't make glitzy fall preview commercials like these anymore! Actually, they don't make them at all anymore, but these were so much fun!!!
