Excellent post. Many thanks for this. I am really happy to see more of this band. These guys really stir it up here. Its funny to think that so-called "jazz" fans would not catch up to this, but its all in what you want to hear , i guess. Hard to believe that this band has been going for ten years already.
Mats Gustafsson was replaced by Jeb Bishob, because he became father that time! You're right, Gustafsson is quite important for the Tentet, but I think Bishob did a great job, too! I have been to this concert and I especially remember this incredible beginning with Brötzm and Bishob - it was really amazing to see them live in person! Louis
Thanks for the high energy post here. I wonder what would happen if they walked into a Chicago club like the Velvet Lounge or the New Apartment Lounge where Fred Anderson or Von Freeman jams on Monk tunes or Cherokee.
Superb amazing musicianship but where is the release from the tension? Listen to Love Supreme by Coltran or Branford Marsallis for an example of how to present free form in my opinion - finding a grove occasionally will make this form of music breath and come to life - but it is hard for me to judge since this is not what I normally listen to or could I - so much pent up tension - from an "outside" source, no pun intended
a love supreme came out at a transtional period for coltrane. Once he hit ascension there was not much harmonic resolution. THat was still early in the scope of free jazz. Once albert ayler came out and cecil taylor started playing free much of the hippest jazz was totaly atonal. Especially if you consider the free improvisation movement oversees
dude you watched 5 minutes of music. Have you ever seen a full chicago tentet concert even? besides. there are people who just like to play rough and without boundaries, the energy on these guys is fucking incredible, I for one love this shit! Saw them live and it was one of the best free jazz concerts I have ever seen.
They had a groove at the beginning and then went out, this video does not show the end of the song anyway, so maybe they did bring it back in somewhat at the end.

pharoah sanders' album karma is also a great example of this - however, these musicians probably couldn't care less about "the listener!"
