Here Borodin brings it all together. The weary theme heard in the viola in the desolate second movement becomes the accompaniment for a fiery contrapuntal dance alternating with a lyrical passages which eventually weave into the wild rhythm that never quite goes away, even when you think it has. Borodin at his best!
As an aside, this movement's fiery theme shows up in (groan) Kismet as the song, "Was I Wazir?"
The world weary love lorn entrance of that initial theme like a lost hummingbird yearning for home is so intensely touching and meaningful. But then, before we start to feel sorry for ourselves,a fight for survival breaks out and we feel with renewed zest the whole intensity and yearning of the life experience. What a Contrast!
After listening to this, one can only nourish in him the undescrivible worlds it has displayed.
