WSHE in Miami used to play this song in early 80's when South Florida was Heaven on Earth.Lots of drinkin, drugs, older guys with go-fast boats....in Coconut Grove.
Takes me back to the Coconut Grove in Santa Cruz.....if you ever get the chance to go to Monterey bay check it out. Today the bandstand is the foremost venue for bands from the 60's and 70's. Peter Noone calls it his favorite place to perform.
Its true how nothing matters. I wonder what happened to us... the message of music of today. There Is no point In saying the music today has nothing peaceful, loving as this without pretentiousness. I would just like to know seriously, what happened to us....
@pukenshette I like the original better, but I agree the DLR version is very good, an d he kept the magic in the song. I'm sure a lot of folks will indeed write that off before giving it a listen though. Fans of this song, check out the DLR version too.
I bought the album Hums of the Lovin' Spoonful back in '66 when I was in the Air Force stationed in Montana. I didn't buy a lot of albums back then, but I bought this one.
Rain on the Roof and Nashville Cats were other favorites on this album. A nice variety of musical styles on this album.
an acoustic version WAS on "What's Up Tiger Lilly" a Woody Allen film in which he took an old B & W Japaneses film and "over-dubbed" it with his own words and Coconut Grove played throughout the movie!
cocanut grove was never released as a single.the song got strong airplay on progressive rock stations on formats that were called underground musicthese were mainly during the emergence of fm radio while am stations were all still predominan top 40.This is one of john,Zal Steve and joes best song. Also heard it in concert when gerry yester the brother of jim yester from the associatin replaced Zal Yanovsky in the late sixties with the spoonful...mike
I remember listening to Beaker Street @ 1:00 AM in the morning while laying in bed in Minnesota, I was only 16 back in 68That was a AM Station but very HI-End, and put out a huge signal coming from St. Louis area
i met john sebastian a few years ago..i thanked him for "coconut grove"..i always loved the atmosphere of this recording...it always nice when u get a chance to thank an artist for something they created that u really enjoyed..i dont bother celebs as a rule but when i feel strongly and its from the heart i'll tell them if the opportunity arises...
I still have the record album! Just a great song; thanks for posting!

Brilliant. From a band whose lead singer was considered to be in the same mould as Brian Wilson.
