Love The Band's orig version, but Joan does such a great job. I remember seeing this on the Muppet Show as a kid. GREAT CLIP!

Was Joan the first one to do this song?
Does any one know?

The Band were the first to record it. It was written by Robbie Robertson or something like that.
By the way this is the best version of this song I've heard, shame the rats cut it short.

No. It is an old song. She covered it on her Country Music Album.

One of the most successful versions was "Der Tag als Conny Cramer starb" sung by the German singer Juliane Werding.
She has a great sense of humor.

I love Joan Baez and the Muppets but I guess I was young when this show came on because I don't remember it...Her voice is beautiful and the Muppets are fun and the two fused in such a great way.

the original song, written by robbie robertson of The Band, had the lyric "til stoneman's cavalry came"
