Sly and the Family Stone was the first "black" act to "sing" and "play" their instruments. Prior to Sly, groups (guys or girls) would sing and bands would play - of course Sly was multi-everything.
@cakafella - Let' not forget Blood, Sweat & Tears. And since you included EWF let's add Kool and the Gang (the original band had no lead vocalist) , and of course the Ohio Players. But for the "big bodacious horn section", BS&T, Chicago, and the Tower were in a league all their own. I personally like the Tower because of the always prominent baritone sax, rhythm section with the heavy bongos, and that kick-a*s thumping bass.
@cakafella Yea I'm wit dat.Them 3 rite there. The horn game was the thing every 1 then was tryna capitalize on.That was suppose to be mark of excellence.
There are all these people out there today who wear their stingy brim fedoras, own just about every digital device Apple will market, hell, even wore T-shirts with Jobs' image when he died, are tatted and pierced even in places that have got to be uncomfortable, and live in neighborhoods like Williamsburgh in NYC. But can any of them answer the question posed by this song? Have any of them ever even listened to this song? To paraphrase the lyrics: Sometimes hipness is what you ain't!
this song is especially good on wednesdays. actually Fridays. Actually Thursdays. And Tuesdays. and mondays and saturdays and sundays aw screw it I listen to this song every day at least twice.
lenny williams comes to my school every year for a fundraising concert and plays with us (the jazz band) and our notables (advanced choir) and we play this with him. (: its GREAT. and we have prince his keyboardist. (: its great.
I used to listen to this album in my car in the early 70's..... recorded onto a c90 cassette......... agree that Only so much oil in the ground was THE song Ms Jollycholly.
there is only so much oil in the ground was THE song which flipped me out when I heard it in my boyfriends room in 1974. He had just bought a Marantz Quadrophinic system and everyone would gather at his place and play TOP over and over, dancing all over the room and annoying the tennants downstairs. Everyone was really skinny in those days because we danced CONTSTANTLY
my marching band is doing this song for our show, at first i hated it because the version we use is in cut time and I play the highest bass drum for tonal, and its a pain in the neck to count. but now it's my favorite song in our half time show
No question was ever asked with such "GREATNESS"!!. You know that you've been there(and some are still trying to figure it out), done that. "Found the right road"..............Y'ALL!! Hope so.
Sorry to say,LOVE Rocco's stuff,But sad to say this is the only song they play to ME(me and not anyones elses)that has any balls, everything else is weak, this is one of the best songs ever in any genre, but this is where it ends for TOP in my book
THIS BAND TOOK THOSE SIXTEETHS TO ANOTHER LEVEL AND MADE 'EM WALK AND TALK THE BEAT OF FUNK AND SOUL----- LONG LIVE---- "ONE O AND DA"---- IN THE GENRE OF FUNK AND SOUL!!!!!
can you upload what happened to the world that day pleaseee
