This tune is still king tone! This one goes out to my long-time pal who's driving his restored 1960 Vette all the way to California in Spring 2012. Stan -- I hope you find what you need/want in Cali. Ohio certainly didn't do well by you. Vaya con dios, Stan!
@FanOfPopCulture YEP! Buddy Holly lives in this one! Maybe Del thought so too. "The words stopped coming" -- Del Shannon before his death. Heaven keep you forever, Del.
@mickeymousebiker1 What I loved about Del Shannon is that he kept the 50s alive in 1964 and 1965 with this kind of music. Even as late as 1966 with songs like I Can't Believe My Ears. But at the same time helped revolutionize music with experimental sounding stuff like Ginny In The Mirror (regular 50s style rock and roll song with a fairground organ added in, after that a lot of bands would start adding rock organs).
i think this song really kicks butt! I forgot about it but heard it on my tv cable channel that plays only oldies. y wasn't he voted into the hall of fame?
I love this song..very eerie tho cos i remember when it first came out i heard the pain in his voice by his falsetto at the end...and sadly later he blew himself away.Is it tied in..who knows....but listen to that falsetto at end of this song and judge that for yourself!!
@Hitch0403 This came out in 1964, he killed himself in 1990, so I don't think there was a direct connection, however it's been said that over years of favoring songs about heartache and pain (with Don't Gild The Lily, Lily and Hey Little Star as notable exceptions) he slowly became the morose character in his songs. But the reason he favored that style of music was due to being unable to completely get past tough high school experiences. But many speculate it was an adverse reaction to Prozac.
One of my two favorite Del Shannon Songs, the other is the Classic Runaway!
The Rocking Roll Hall of Fame can go plank itself! He should have been in it along time ago! The public who bought his records at the time are the ones who already judged his music and it's "Timeless & Classic!" RIP Del Shannon! Run, Run, Runaway!...........
Gotta LOVE that "Farfisa Organ".... this guys songs made me take up the keyboard... later I traded for a VOX because I thought it was "cooler" with Black Keys... and the Dave Clark FIve had one... (as did the Animals) ... but Nothing topped the sound of the Farfisa.... Great Song!
wonderful singer, wonderful musician...he is one of those musicians where you can listen to him when you're ulta down, and 3 minutes later after listening to his music you are happy as can be. still can't imagine why he'd off himself :(.
@psychedelicbluesdiva --- most people who have attempted to "off themselves" and survived the incident... will tell you that it cam at a moment of pure desperation,
and afterward most realized that there wasn't anything that couldn't be resolved if they had a little support from say, a good friend. -- He was probably alone, or felt very much alone...
We are all searching for something. That true love to brighten up our day. I've searched high and low and followed the sun to that special place in ones' heart!!
