This is where I was first certified to dive, back in 1975. Water is warm and crystal clear, + 100 foot visibility. Corral was not dead back then, absolutely beautiful.
Spider Conch Shells, all kinds of shiny Cowries. Lion Fish, Octopi etc. etc.
First Dive I ever did was to 100 foot. My Instructors name was: Detlev O' Connor. Profit was not a motive, a Military Recreational activity.
Terrific Sport, Equipment gets pricy, Trips I believe are still reasonable for what you can get: A life Experience

Nice video, but it didn't seem very tropical to me. It kind of reminded me of Oahu Hawaii and diving off shore from Honolulu. The reefs are all trashed. Does anyone know how good Guam is?
I see the ocean as a whole different world beneath ours. So much of it hasn't even been explored yet. Its so beautiful. There are no cars smoggy the world there. The fish don't just throw their trash around. Its a much better place...

Wow, reading the comments has really made me feel better, knowing I am not alone in my desire to see Okinawa again. I too grew up on the island, I still consider those years the best of my life. I miss the food, I miss Hot Spar and shopping out gate 2 but most of all I miss the perfect ocean and beaches...
i dive in cozumel and grand cayman and some freshwater. My dad always talks asbout the toliet bowl and the seawall out side the reefs, i wanna go some day
oh god how i miss it. my dad was stationed on Kadena, and my brother and i got dive lessons. i remember going to the seawall off gate 1 and taking my test there.
i was young so it was alittle scarry. but now that i have grown up, i can appreciate the experience i had.
Okinawa is beautiful. I went snorkelling on Tokashiki, a small island in the Kerama Islands, just off Okinawa. Been there twice. Coral, powder soft beaches, torquoise seas, peace ..... bliss!!! Oh, and Karate!!!
anyone who's interested in diving may also find the book "Scuba Diving & Snorkeling for Dummies" useful. it explains about free diving, special breathing techniques, emergency procedures, how to avoid the bends, how to handle dive anxiety etc
No its not, its depressing - the majority of the coral featured in it is dead, so therefore it is only a good film in terms of reminding us that we are on the brink of ecological disaster on land and at sea. Sorry.
I used to teach SCUBA diving there back in 2002-2003 and was in the water all over the prefecture nearly every day. Although the waters have been heavily over-fished and some of the reefs around the very popular dive sites (Maeda Point and Sunabe Seawall) are nothing to write home about, the reefs around the the northern part of Okinawa-honto and the Kerama Islands are in very good shape.
I have well over 100 dives in the waters around Okinawa. There are beautiful areas, full of color and vibrant with life. What you see in this video is the exception not the rule. The infamous Crown Of Thrones star fish is responsible for most of the devastation you see. Also, fish are abundant in the reefs that you can't walk to. This flik is a poor representation of the beauty that is available if you dive from a boat or trek through the boonies to get to the water. Love Okinawa!
Actually if you were there diving you would see vibrant colors and coral that is alive...very beautiful in fact...this video does not do Okinawa diving justice! Good film none the less
Okinawa is under Japanese Government, but at one time had been their own country. It is the island that got passed around as peace offerings from China/Japan...These people have a long respect for Nature and are the longest living people on Earth. If you can don't miss the opportunity to go!!!
I agree 100 percent. They also way overfish. They have no size limits, so they take the fish before they can reproduce as well. Japan is going to be responsible for overfishing the world's oceans and raping the ocean of its life. Also, they don't just stick to their waters, they go over to our coast line and do the same.
30 Months on the rock in the mid 80's. It was heaven on earth. Okinawa and its people are wonderful. Thanks for the memories. USAF / Chuck, Jim, Neufer, Smitty, Paul, Larry, Mike and all the wonderful women who loved the A sign, brone, and bonefires on the beach at Devil Point. Great Diving. Dc
Seragaki was my little piece of heaven. Learned to be a good diver here, and it has given me many good memories as I have moved along down the highway of life. I recall it's inviting waters, it's call to come dive in me, and it's beautiful people. Thanks for the great memories. I'll be sure to watch this many times through the years.

I should really like to go to Japan, but because of their whaleing I've decided that I'm not going to do it.
Whaleing is wrong and I don't want to support a country that is doing such a inhumane and horrible act.

I did over 200 dives on Okinawa Dec 1997- May 2001). I recognize some of the scenes in this video as being Oona Point.
My favorite place was the Kerama Islands. Lots of sea turtles there, and never saw a sea snake.
