  • Those pistons are flying!

  • This was really great! Thank you for your excellent work.

  • Great mastery of the scene, and the capture of the sound of the locomotive, at what appears to be quite a distance from your camera.

  • A very good job done - - - -I am in Quetta Pakistan, and we had steam engines back in the 70s and 80s it is a real thrill to travel on steam trains, please continue with this type of collections.

  • Nice steady video! I love it!!!

  • Awesome!!! you get it man!!

thanks a lot for this video!

  • Thank for the tape.

Huge machine in a large and spectacular landscape!

It is a living part of the story of USA.

    Great!

  • Skip. Your vids are just great. I am jealous that I'm not out there chasing these locos with you. You know, now is the time for us to return to coal fire locos and get away from oil. They were in a renaisance in the 40s. They should return to the rails.

  • What a fabulous sequence. It seems unbelievable that the reciprocating valve gear and connecting rods can last such punishment for hour after hour.

Those folks travelling on the train wouldn't have the advantage of seeing what we can see on the video.

  • @theuntold90 It looks like the wheels arnt moving at all do they

  • goes really fast!

  • I am glad that Union Pacific still has a steam program, unlike NS.

  • Makes your hair stand up--such power-- a symphony of motion.

  • @theuntold90 - generally around 70, as it is the max track speed, in most areas with a green signal.

  • Awesome video my friend. A proper chase vehicle with fixed camera mount.....dont know how you did it......and dont know how you suppressed the wind noise............but glad you did.

    10/10 matey !!

  • We thank you for providing us the great experience[-] We do not tire of seeing the great machine hauling the train in all majesty[-] My two grand nephew and niece are facinated by the great shafts churning the wheels and the wail of the behemoth[-] I have always been facinated by the Steam Locomotives and can boast of having travelled in the engine only twice in my life, thanks to the kindly engineers who recognized my love[-] Now at sixty I still look forward to more and more [-] VishwaNath G

  • roll on big steama, roll on

  • a beautyful steam mashine

  • Does this thing have ccs installed or do they just get absolute blocks?

  • Absolutly fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great, great video! Loved it! well produced, with no camera jitters and no clutter or unnecessary sounds other than the beautiful sounds of the train. Awesome how the camera position remained in line with the engine.

  • what speed are you traviling at?

  • AWESOME!!! Thumbs Up!

  • 4-8-4's rule the steamworld! Regardless what railroad.

  • Keep on posting videos of the steam trains. Thanks a bunch,Skip. Maybe I should be envyous of you, having the time and camera to get out there and chase these engines, but I'm not, I'm just greatful that you take the time to post your adventures on youtube so the rest of us trainuts can enjoy these engines while both they and we are still alive. God bless you and keep a full head of steam yourself.

  • 2nd what 1969richiej said!

    and AWESOME!

Favorite (It's a 5 anyway even if the ratings are disabled!)

  • Hi Skip, from the Lower Mainland of BC, home of the Royal Hudson. I LOVE your steam video's, as do my sisters and brother, and just wanted to let you know that what you have done, has brought back childhood memories and a few tears that we do not see these magnificent machines still in regular operation.

WELL DONE!. I would like to shake your hand and give you personal thanks for taking care of our shared, North American steam heritage,

    Keep up the great work!!

  • wow what a loco,it looks like a european loco,excellent video 5*

  • Your Chasing # 844 to California and this vid (Laramie, Wyoming) are fantastic ! Runbys and pacing vids are both great. Look forward to seeing more vids from you.

  • nice iron horse, the diesel engine isn't running right now but they got the diesel engine with them just incase they break down, so they don't get stuck out of no whare, another word the Diesel engine is their reserve engine.

  • well sideslide, its also used for 2 other reasons:1-HEP(head end power for the cars) 2-dynamic braking for going down grades.

  • Such great videos! I just love watching these great examples of steam engine driven trains. I just discovered that you've done several great videos along these lines, so I just subscribed! The ratings were disabled on this, but I've been rating all of your videos 5 Stars! Yes, please do finish a video on Rock Springs, WY

I also liked watching the train backing into the rail yard at the end.

  • It's amazing to see such large engineering marvels in action like this! Great video!

  • It's absolutely amazing to see 80 inch drivers go around almost 8 times per second.

  • Unbelieveably great vids, oscar worthy! Thanks so much!

  • good films-a fan from sweden.

  • Your videos get better and better. Keep uploading!

  • This was simply GREAT! Keep 'em coming Skip.

  • Keep working Skip on the rest of the video - what is 844 speed limited to - 80 mph? Looked like it was doing about that - could probably do 120 if allowed!!

    Beautiful looking engine.

    *****

  • Faster than 120!!! But since they only have ONE locomotive, she is restricted to about 80 mph or less. At 80, she is just trotting. I was born and raised in North Platte, NE in the 1950s, and my father was in train service on the UPRR.

  • One more item. The European style "elephant ears" were added after WWII because of aerodynamic problems with the exhaust. She and her sisters have been voted the best and most beautiful steam locomotives in the world. This is real class, five stars plus, in motion. Again, from North Platte.

  • Good Job there, I hope to post some video when it goes from Laramie to Cheyenne on 12th

  • Its amazing those heavy rods don't come flying all to pieces at that speed. That is a tremendous amout of weight slinging around. Awesome display of engineering!

  • On the 4449, there is about 4000lbs of combined reciprocating weight and at 80mph, all of that change direction 11 times per second!

  • Yo, Skip keep up the great work. UP 844 is the greatest!

  • Great fun video

  • Please, Absoloutely Post More!!! These are AWSOME!!! With the sad economy issues, and high insurance expenses, it's so great that U.P. is still keeping this program alive! It gives us all hope...That there is a light at the end of the tunnel, all is not lost, and we can find some joy out there in these locomotives. Which continue to prove that U.P.'s employees, and Mgmt. are insuring that, no matter what happens, some things are secure, and like U.P.'s steamers we will survive no matter what!!!

  • @1969richiej I totally agree! Too bad NS just stuck J611 in the museum and refuses to run her again!

  • Great Shot!!

    4:55

    :)

  • this engine is going to be on public display at the oakland ca shops

  • Keep up the great work! Can we get a vid of at static 844 & 3985 looking up at her from close-by ground level? Would give great perspective.

  • Grate vid as usual Skip! ^_^

  • awsome 5* keep going!!

  • Wednesday April 22nd, Stockton's Robert J. Cabral Station (ACE Rail Calif.), depot track on display 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM. Weber Ave. will be blocked with Stockton Police doing traffic control. Come one, come ALL! Exit Stanislaus St. off HWY4 and head north to Weber Ave. Park anywhere you can find parking or in the ACE Rail lots.

  • Awesome I can't wait to check her out when she comes to Denver for SFD in july.

  • Keep up the good work Skip.

  • Fascinating and brilliant as usually are Skip's Videos.
