I was reading one of Bernard Cromwell's wonderful Richard Sharpe novels and he made reference to a character's "Devonian accent" -- something I'd never heard of. Thanks so much for posting this. Fascinating. I'ver heard it in a hundred different movies over the years, but now I can put a name to it.
wow, im from plymouth, get told i got a strong accent all the time, but i dont sound like that! hahaha! dont even think bristols sound like that haha! thats madness.
bollaks i come frm the capital of devon and we dnt sound like bell ends ur making a twat of ur self and by the way i live in a city the people who have that accent is people from glostishire if i spelt that right lol
I have to say, after a shakey start this is actually a better attempt at Devonshire than I could manage! I grew up there too... That said the locals round my way were even more indecipherable...
I found this cause I wanted an example of the casual use of 'moi luvverrr' which I love so much :D You got that spot on :D
we don't talk like that :L..( obviously i can't hear people talking ina accent because im used to it lol ) but i heard matthew goode and we sound a bit more posh that's too farmer-ish; good try though..
People sound like that in Cornwall too. I mean, yeah, Cornwall's right next to Devon. People don't sound like that anymore. I wish they did. Only old Cornish men sound like that in Cornwall. The Cornish accent is almost dissapearing in Schools. In about 10 years time I reckon it'll be gone. Shame really. I'll always remember it.
Unfortunately hardly any of us actually have the thick Devonian accent anymore, which I don't. Only the older guys, maybe 50+, mostly the farmers or people who have lived here since they were kids or for a very long time have the accent any more.
We still use the phrases assosiated with south-west, like prefixing a lot of words with "bloody", but we have more of a general accent nowadays. I wish I had a thick accent. >:
i think amrican accent is too sissy or girlish, although i have a strong american accent, thanks that my tone is fat so that it doesnt sound so gay. in my point of view, american english suits woman better but not good 4 man.
i remember when i was young, we learn british accent, later the chinese goverment told us : look, the russian r learning american english now, northern chinese need a change and learn american english. then most of us speak english with an american accent.
@Supersmooth007 well i actually speak with a west country accent, some might say its from working on dartmoor for years, you kinda picks it up my lover.
Nice try, but I have never heard anybody pull off the west country accent authentically and you're no exception. I am from Somerset and have heard many people try to mimic the accent, but most people fail. The chap in 'The Office' (Gareth) with the south-westerly accent is the best I have ever heard.
They sound like mental retards with no brain cells down there in the West Country! Give me a London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Scottish or any accent other than that retarded rubbish any day.
Why is it that ANYONE attempting a Devonshire accent is unable to move any further west than Bristol. Attempts to go further west into Cornwall are even more hilariously inaccurate - Check out the old BBC "Poldark" series.
Sorry, I live in mid Devon, and only an immigrant to the area could possibly think that a proper Devon accent sounds like that.
Forget the other coments mate that was wicked! giiit on, i tells 'im & my lover - thats proper deb'em (devon) that is. Not like the knobs from the home counties flooding the area (totnes & exeter take note). And this comment:
"Sorry, I live in mid Devon, and only an immigrant to the area could possibly think that a proper Devon accent sounds like that. "
YOU my friend have apparently never been to any small outlying villages.
P.s. im from cornwall.. and well.. er i dont think the accent there is that.. strong. maybe its just when other people try the accent, they cant get it .. exactly right.. lol.. buuut my family are from Brighton in sussex so ive got some annoying more average brit accent i think.. not sure though.. i still say dun'em instead of dont they alot.. :$
