her and billy joe dropped there daughter billie of the bridge cos they wernt married and u got in trouble for having a baby without marrying so they killed het then billy couldent stand that he killed his daughter and wanted to be with her so he killed himself
Wauww! The level of maturity and IQ in here is... I'm guessing none of these two actually have a life! Personally I find this track quite boring, but if others find it great why would I attack them?
If you have an opppion on music express it, but music is not something you can dictate, and just because you might not like the artist does not justify you piss on everyone else who does! Your comment doesn't even remotely say why you don't like Sinead...
I have no idea why there is such animosity toward Sinead's version of this Bobby Gentry classic. I think it's an excellent interpretation. Very haunting. Yes, I prefer the original, but this very good in it's own right.
@NoRosesForMe shut the fuck, you lame, ignorant fucker. youre the one who doesnt have a life, making threats to someone who will never know. go fuck your mom <3
@burrrandy you cant even string a sentence together properly!! You obviously dont know what YOU are talking about . CHILDISH reply...go fuck my mom....im as female..how is that possible you little skag? GET A LIFE . FIRST AMENDEMENT......I CAN SAY WHAT THE FUCK I WANT!
the start with the drums killed it for me. Its a follkie tune. Not a dark drum bangin bunch of shit. I just hope Bobby Gentry got her royalties from this. What does Sinead know about the south and the shit here and ...Mississippi poor folks or,,,,anything? Just being honest. .....has she ever plowed acres ? NO offense to POGlegend at all. Peace
@NoRosesForMe - 'Peace' after that diatribe? Hmmm. This song was recorded to raise funds for traumatised kids from war torn countries. I bought the CD and I remember. Obviously Sinead is Irish and proud of it - she's just interpreting a song for a good cause (rather creatively too, the baby crying is a genius touch). It's worth remembering that country music takes many of its traditions and instrumentation/arrangements from Irish folk music - that's well documented.
@aerialkate you missed my point. was right. Never mind. ,,,and who are you callin a diatribe? Im from a fuckin TRIBE. 2 of them matter of fact. Im Irish-Cherokee-Blackfoot. so,,,,again,,,,,what does this goon know about ANYthing. Much less the south and the shit we have to live in here. ....STILL livin in it. Shes not questioning where she'll get her next meal. Educate yrself. And thank you. bye bye bow
@NoRosesForMe - In my experience whenever someone writes 'bye bye' it usually means they fear my writing back, but I'm sure you don't. I'm not sure what your ethnicity has to do with anything, but thank you for letting me know. As KD Lang said (about ten years ago) - there are satellite dishes in those backwater homesteads now. There's still poverty, but it's not like the way it was in Loretta Lynn's day. So if Taylor Swift sang this song, would it be more believable? Nah...
@aerialkate First of all,,,FUCK Taylor Swift....are you tryin to be a smart ass with me?! SHE has no idea about the real deal either. Got that? My ethnic background has A LOT to do with it....natives are STILL livin in poverty and have no fkn satelite dishes where Im from. Im very proud of my grandfathers I dont even have a satelite and I work in a factory for a livin. Its all about being REAL and KNOWING whats real and knowing the true real hardships of human beingsnevermind!! ffs!
I love the Irish twist she's put on the song, only listened to the original for the first time tonight, and both are pretty powerful stuff. Although I could see this would sound strange for someone used to Bobbie Gentry!
fantastica come sempre. un critico - nn ricordo chi- ha scritto che con la sua interpretazione sembra che il cadavere del bimbo billy venga a bussarti alla pòorta...
Sinead has great talent but she just does not connect with this song, the original is just too powerful. There are a few songs that cannot be touched, this is one.
It's an OK rendition of the original. Perhaps she was trying to make the song her own, but what gives the song its impact has been amputated. That would be the "south". It's a difficult thing to master. A lot of the meaning comes from the intonations, and they're missing here. Her rendition is missing that certain quality. Good try from an accomplished vocalist.
@6x10x23 I agree. There is something missing from this version. and it is the 'southerness'. Sinead, while being a great singer is from Europe and doesn't get it.
Song is recorded for Warchild foundation "Help" album, and for a good reason, all the money went to school kids from Bosnia at the time. Sinead is just great and it's a nice cover and of course nice original too! I think she did good to Bobbie! :P
@pkld2 - AUSSIE - WHAT'S UP BROTHER? HOW'S THE KANGAROOS DOIN? THE PLACE STILL HOPPIN WITHOUT ME BEING THERE? ANYWAY - DON'T OWN A SOAP BOX. NEVER HAVE.NEVER WILL BUT I DID STAY AT A HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS LAST NIGHT. ENJOY SINEAD IF YOU MUST. I DIDN'T GET IT. BOBBY G.'S WAS THE KANGAROO ASS OR MAYBE ITS TAIL. SINEAD WOULD LOOK MUCH BETTER IF SHE HAD A MUSTACHE. PEACE & LOVE.
I appreciate her trying to put her own Celtic stamp on classic of Southern Gothic country music, but the lack of a Southern twang in her pronunciation of the place names just makes the refrain about ridge and bridge seem too clipped. It robs it of too much of its ache and moan, I think, to really pack an emotional punch. Whatever chauvinism there is in saying this aside, this songs only lends itself to Southern covers .
@schwebebahnable understand your perspective; the emotions go much beyond the south, though - unfortunately, irish also suffered intense prejudice, poverty, and the resultant suicide and infanticide.
@schwebebahnable i for one dont need the sound of ignorance polluting every nuance of language especially that of the delta where i was raised. unfortunately whitetrashdom permeates every other part of life so why not this too....
