  • Quick question. I am center in narrow lanes's. I wanted to use the sidewalks since I do not trust alot of motorist's. Since they are snow covered I have to use the road. How should I treat a 2 lane with a center turn lane? Should I ride close to the edge or towards the center? Thanks.

  • @CycleMan2200, if you have two-lane roads with a center turn lane, you should be placed in such a manner as to require overtaking drivers to move into the center lane to pass. Riding on sidewalks will increase your risk by as much as 85 percent, regardless of snow.

When you ride at the edge of the road, you encourage other road users to attempt to pass you too closely. Centering in the lane or to the left encourages them to pass you safely.

Consider to take a cycling safety course.

  • @CycleMan2200 I tried to take a safety course last year, but they didn't have enough people, and it never happened. Cycling classes seem to be few and far between around here. I only have about 3 roads I ride on where it is 2 lanes, 1 with a center turn lane, one without any turning lanes at all, and another with a higher speed limit and a 4 feet wide shoulder. I am also afraid of the cops stopping me and citing me for impeding traffic, which almost happened last year.

  • All to typical. Point and shoot motoring mentality

  • @MewFushisDad, back in the days of my motoring, I've done something similar, but only to roll a foot or two, since I looked before I stepped on the pedal.

Too frequently, I'd set out on a drive and take the wrong turn, heading west instead of south or similar.

I've done the same in the velomobile too, but the results are far less extensive.

  • Wow... there is driving with a defective autopilot! Glad the driver in the other left lane did not just go!
