Heres a video of a guy who made "wolverine claws" that extend when you jet your hand forward and stop but omg it was horrible...I would love to see how yours work and if they can pass as a real costume idea or just for giggles on their own.
hey kumous34 you should check out back yard effects on youtube. I dont know if they retract but they look perfect for cheep. but they do have instructions for the assasins creed hidden blade and it retracts maybe between the two you could make somthing work. good luck

in case anyone wants to know. this is pretty easy to make. well, not easy, but not a very complicated structure. you can just forge the pieces out of illuminum and sauder the wires on the inside of the skeleton and to the light. this is the coolest thing ive ever seen dude! you need to make a how to. whats cool is that you can actually cover that with peices of lightweight metal or something else, to make it armoured..awesome!!
