Pretty good rigged fire you've got. You can hardly hear when you ignite the fuel from the probably loosened valves with a propane grill lighter at around 1:03.
Your video is biased. When properly operated the 502 model is super dependable. You did not run it right. Adult things should not be left to children to play. Coleman did not communicate that you have to have an IQ of 85 or better to use the stove. Thanks for the video though. It shows HOW NOT TO OPERATE A COLEMAN CAMP STOVE.
ps BY THE WAY, YOU MESSED UP A REALLY GREAT STOVE.
Looks like the stove spits fuel out at 1:05. Why dont you pressurise it with the pump and see how you get on. When its very cold you have to re-pump it to keep it pressurised until the burner gets hot enough.
I have an old model 400 (same as your but with legs) only thing I have changed is the pump seals, they are available in a service kit.
Mines all old and the legs are rusty.. Just like me :)
If you have trouble with these, get a 550B and run it on kerosene. Less chance of it going "woof" in your face since the fuel isn't combustible until preheated.
The trick with these white gas stoves is (a) ensure you have a match or spark ready as soon as the tap is turned on to avoid flooding and (b) be prepared to re-pump often if you're running at "HI".
you retard, it clearly states on the side in block capitols BEFORE LIGHTING Pump 30 TIMES, OPEN FUEL VALVE FULLY, LIGHT, PUMP 30 MORE TIMES. this is to prevent the fuel pressure equalising to the atmospheric pressure and the flame going inside as seen in this video. i use Coleman petrol stoves on long camps and alcohol or meths stoves like the Swedish mess kit. there safe providing you not a prick around them
This situation is caused by low-grade fuel. it builds in the vaporizer section and once the vapor reaches the burner it ignites. the Coleman 533 is dependable, but used improperly (like shown) causes injury. the orange flame suggests the fuel pressure is low, or the generator tube became too hot and fouled the internal cleaner that clears the nozzle
it's idiot like you don't know how to operate the camping stove, you need to pressurized the tank open the valve and light the burner, if your stove has a lighting lever, adjust it to a lighting position, light the burner, so the burner can heat the fuel line to get the fuel line heated before turning the lighting lever down to normal position
Your stove was lit without enough pressure in the tank. If it is very cold you may want to preheat the generator first. Liquid fuel stoves will run circles around propane in cold weather...and give you more heat for less fuel...way less fuel. Don't give up the ship!
I've added a video of the 500. It was the first stove of this type. If you are using the cold start lever even in extreme cold there is no risk of liquid fuel spilling out.

Could you explain how you are lighting your stove? I might be able to pin point the problem.
This stove has a pricker system on the generator tube. I removed mine and all of the clogging and flaring glitches stopped, however, I must say that this is the worst cooker I have ever owned. It rarely sees the light of day. Not one of colemans best products.
My Feather 442 does the same thing. It's appropriately named, because I have to 'feather' the fuel lever, letting the generator tube gradually heat up, so fuel doesn't come spilling out from the burner box. Maybe some stoves are more cold blooded than others. Preheating the generator tube helps out. Or the tank may be overfilled, not allowing air and fuel to atomize for the startup.
I want to like the 442, but I've had much better luck with my Whipserlite and an alcohol "cat" stove.
hi i over fueled my stove and i caught fire alot worse then this as it just pushed all the fuel out!! so i let it cool emptyed half the fuel and it worked fine ive had my stove for about 8 yrs i even melt lead with it for fishing weights!! i think this stove is worth its weight in gold
you didnt light this right ive used mine in all weather it will only flare up like that if u leave it on spray instead of mist the spray is only for lighting leave it burn for a few minutes then flip to mist otherwise it will just stay flared up
I've owned 1 of these stoves for years and have used it in all weather conditions with no problems, the only reason I could see it catching fire is a complete lack of pressure thus causing the fuel to drip from the jet under the burner plate.
I'm sorry but this looks intentional. There shouldn't be a big yellow flame like that unless it wasn't properly lit. Mine only has a yellow flame for the first 10 to 20 seconds and then it turns to blue like it's supposed to.
I think is the way it is used, i own the 550 and allways have the right blue flame since i light the stove, well pressurized and well lighted it looks the sove was spilling fuel before he lights it and not enough pressure just the fuel over the stove, if you see the liquid fuel dripping or spilling do not start, let the stove are dry and start again, maybe it was overfilled.
It looks like it was intentional. What were you burning on top of the stove? Why would you purposely do something like this and then claim that all Coleman stoves are dangerous?
erm... if an Optimus stove or an MSR stove is covered in fuel near a naked flame they too will catch fire. I don't see what makes Coleman stoves any more dangerous than any other multifuel
I have never had this problem, and owned this stove for 8 years. You must have used Unleaded gasoline and spilled some on the tank and didn't wipe it off.
It's really important to read the instructions and keep it pumped up, especially in cold weather. Propane is safer. People prefer these stoves because they're more compact, but they're often not aware of their potential danger, and Coleman doesn't communicate that danger very well.....
becuase of poor gas expansion, they can NOT compare to a pump liquad fual stove/lantern.
what you have here is an extremely rich air/fuel mix, spiders either crawled in to the air tube(very common on coleman lanterns, spiders love coleman fuel,go figure)
or you overfilled the font not leaving any room for air to be pumped in.this stove should have been turned off and inspected after about 30 sec of this rich mixture. My coleman is a 1966 502 no probs
My 45 year old 4M will function properly in even colder temperatures. I think you may have flooded the stove in this video and its hard to see but it looks like your air fuel lever is not in the proper possition for a cold start.
This lever lets air from the tank mix with fuel to form a mist that will start cold. If you try and start cold without it you will flood the mixing chamber and raw fuel will spill out all over. Coleman stoves are not dangerous, you need to understand how they work

You must be smarter the what you are working on.
You must not be.
It takes no skill to pour gas on a well engineered stove and defame it.

Hmmm, Obviously done by a propane salesman. One video from 2 years ago......Probably died in a propane explosion.

@05clenharth I'm new to using Coleman stove's. Could you explain to me what you mean by pumping 30 times? Thanks!

@heyjana These stoves require you to pump air into the tanks to pressurize the vapors.

dude, take yer own advise and read those "really important" instructions, there is a huge warning label on all there fuel containers
and propane can be dangerous too, does "flamable contents under pressure" mean anything to you?
ive never had any probs with the Coleman liquid fuel products ive had.
but of course, i actually know how to use them -.-
